Hi. Has anyone for any tips for removing the sticky, shiny residue left by masking tape?

I did a terrible job of masking up a Sicaran. I can fix the paint issues but I don't know how to get rid of the sticky stuff.

Axlbush,

That is a rough one, as I assume your paint underneath is not sealed?

A very small soft cloth with soap and water is the easiest fix...but it may also remove some of the underlying layer.

Always use painters tape and be prepared to do touch up unless you have done a great job priming.

My two cents,

CB

I will definitely get a proper painters tape before I next to some masking.

I actually just tried some lahmian medium on a bit of the sticky section. It seems to have removed the stickiness tho it has left a smudgey finish. Luckily I am planning on doing a fair bit of weathering on the tank so hopefully I can blend this in with the overall look

I use a brand called Frogtape, its a bit expensive but it is excellent, far better than any other masking tape I've used.

Lighter fuel is good at removing tape gunk from surfaces, although I've no idea if it will react with the paint.

Oh Canada!

You can try a soft white eraser. I'd let the paint cure fully if possible first, as it's less likely to peel up in the process. Even at that, masking tape adhesive is a tougher beast than almost any acrylic. Acetone and alcohol will definitely get it off, but the paint will be a goner too.

Sometimes pressing and removing tape over adhesive spots can also help lift them off, but again there's a significant risk of tearing up the underlying acrylic. Given the original tape made it off I'd probably try this or the eraser before going with chemical options.

Well unfortunately the best way of removing tape residue from a painted surface involves the use of a heat source like a heat gun and the original tape. You heat up the residue and use the original tape gently dabbing the adhesive away from the surface and back onto the tape substrate and into the original adhesive.

This is how I cleaned hundreds of meters of hardcore gaffer tape residue of painted stage decks

Probably not the best idea on resin kits...

"Goo gone". Thats what it's designed for. Test on arylic paint on a bit of sprue first though as i have never used it on a model. Works great on getting stubborn adhesive residue off surfaces around my house.
