Welcome all to the 80th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.

This month, the theme is our annual Halloween special. Spooks and monsters and everything that goes bump in the night. But it doesn’t have to be all ghouls, ghosts and goblins. You can do trick or treaters, kids in costumes, or eldritch horrors from beyond the stars.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of October and will end at midnight Eastern time on the 31st October. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

The DCMs have seen this already but I have been messing around making a Mexicron, figure he fits the theme, this warden enjoys ancient human films so he's dressing up for Halloween.

That is awesome, and totally fits. Better give him a treat if he knocks on your door, as his trick involves flaying you down to your component atoms.

I'm in with these, what is scarier than being targeted by a devastator squad, just waiting for bases.

Two of these guys were my alternate entry for September, but I decided they fit the October theme better:

Judges Fear and Fire at (poorly) based and primed, Judge Mortis has been stripped and awaits cleanup, and I even ordered Judge Death off eBay. I don't know that they'll ever see any game time, but they'll look nice on the shelf. Hopefully.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

Painting total as of 3/28/2024: 21 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

Man, I wish I didn't finish my chainrasps already. But I'm sure I've got something Halloween-y enough to enter.

Also, loving the competition so far; great choices, folks!

I’ve been stretching my Soul Wars box over many an October. I’m almost done. I’m going to try to get 10 chainrasps done this month and choose the best 5, and have 10 more on sprue to build. Maybe in 2023 I’ll paint something not a Nighthaunt.

I bought just the chainrasps because I like them and working with hexwraith flame is just so much fun. I think I have a giant-sized Malifaux sorrow I can paint in that style.

Haven't actually finished one of these challenges in a fair while but like a glutton for (self-inflicted) punishment I'll go ahead and enter again. This time I'm going with a Mordor Troll from GW's Middle-Earth game; he's certainly scary enough. Proof:

The model itself is not that great of quality; even if you discount the fact that when I put this model together 13 years ago I wasn't very good at assembling, the model doesn't go together that well (ill-fitting parts) so there may be a few gaps. Even my other one that I got and assembled much more recently doesn't look much better.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 7 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

Not sure what I'm feeling that fits this challenge this month, so falling back on my usual furry stuff. Some Burrows and Badgers Undead, and their necromancer:

I will likely do some old metal Necromunda...I have some extra figures I have picked up to flesh out options for the group.

Cheers,

CB

PS: It is a real shame that the Karloth Valois model and zombies will likely not arrive before the end of the month.

So here is a Rogues gallery of metal Necromunda models that need painting, I will see how many I get through.

I set my scheme before the new technicals and contrasts came out. Starting over, I’d probably use them. I make due with an old hex pot of Turquoise Glaze, but I think the new paints flow a lot better, with improved results. But as all I have left is a few foot-soldiers, I’m not going to change etherial steads mid haunt.

WIP of the first 5. Just popped them off the painting handles. Need the base work done, and then the next 5. Once they are all set, I’ll start the cage match to choose the best ones to enter.

We’re talking about different ways of painting spooks, it’s not off topic.

Nice looking batch of ghosts you have there. The new paints lets you do some pretty neat things pretty easy these days.

If I were to make a night haunt army, I would want to sculpt bodies and jack-o-janterns for them so they’d all look like kids trick-or-treating wearing sheet ghost costumes.

But I digress. I’m going to do some villains from Cursed City.

I’ve never entered the painting challenge but I’m going to this time. Is it ok to enter a mini I sculpted myself?

He’s a snake hiding in a scarecrow. I made him for burrows and badgers but seeing as he’s on theme for Halloween I though I might enter the competition and get him painted up.

I need to take some better pictures but at least you can see he’s not painted yet.

It is absolutely OK to enter stuff you sculpt yourself. Anything vaguely miniature/scale model related, regardless of origin is fair game. Just bare or primed a base color at the start of the month.

I'm working on painting up this months freebie Assault Intercessor in LotD theme. If that can count as spooky scary for Halloween, I'll get some pics up when he's done! I think it would be my first proper entry. I have been taking pics from start to finish for other reasons, so I have proof in case him being this months "mini of the month" from GW isn't enough.
