welcome, son, welcome, to the bank drainer.

what faction are you collecting? space marines, sisters of battle, orks, necrons, etc? any of them stand out as the cool one you want to collect? theirs dedicated threads in the tactics section for basically every army and the guys in those threads can help you with elementary listbuilding.

i started with eldar, and played them for several years before Life, the Universe and Everything got in the way, and i dropped out of the hobby for over a decade. then, early 2020 i decided to get back into it after a freind got me a box for old times sake, and i now have about 3,500 points of guys in 3 armies with plans to expand that as time and budget allow and looking to start deathwatch as well. i have about 1,500 points of custodes, 1k of thousand sons and 500 points of admech, so a reasonable spread.

if you have any questions, im sure someone on this forum will be able to answer you.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

So I decided upon space wolves mainly because of the Viking theme and the wolves. How much have I spent? Probably upwards of £ 100. So not gone to crazy yet. Liking the Harlequins in terms of the models, so that’s probably going to be a little further down the line.

My original post should have been longer but for some reason it was missing the rest.

The imperium magazine was how I’ve got started. Great as it is it’s a bit limiting and frustrating waiting for a postal drop. Great for the content and cost but also seems to be a slightly inferior set of models than purchasing the better versions in store. So will probably pick and choose a few issues and buy in store.

Also does anyone have the warhammer app and is it worth subscribing to?

Thanks guys.

The app is included in Warhammer+ for a marginally higher cost.

If you want to get the app anyway, you would get much more for your money with W+.

Before you buy it though, give the free software Battlescribe a try. It is free and great. Maybe it already covers what you need.

Welcome to the hobby. Wargaming with GW stuff is indeed a lot of fun as long as you get to play with people with a mindset like yours.

About huge amount of money required to keep up, it's an urban legend. Pretty much all the most common hobbies/activies drain way more money.

Welcome to the rout!

If you want to get more wulfy, the basic Space Wolves pack has numerous bits and accessoires like wolf tails, a lot of heads, wolfy weapons and much more. They can be build as Blod Claws, Grey Hunters and Wolf Guards, which are all viable. Add some Jump packs in and you get Wolf Guards with Jump Packs, right now one of the stronger options.

Just a heads up. There is this pack for 48$ https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Space-Wolves-Pack-2020

And this for just two dollars more https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Space-Wolves-Blood-Claws-2016

They are the same sprues but the second one is much better value, giving you five more marines for two dollars. So there is basically no reason to buy the first good hunting!

In the first quarentine of Corona, I bought tabletop simulator with 8 Friends because I said, ey, Im gonna teach you how to Play Warhammer (because at that point I had came back to It a couple years prior with 8th).
Right now, from those, 7 are buying and building armies and playing 40k and KT.
They are online Friends so we dont play physically, but I helped them find stores and clubs in their respective cities.
We still play online, share our painted miniatures, etc...
Sometimes I feel bad for them, for how much money the have spent because I got them hooked in this.
But is kinda beautifull how one person can help to grow a community.

Just as you my Friends became hooked. You are really the fresh Blood and future of the hobby , not only gw related. And to see new people excited always reminds me to keep things in perspective, and remember why i felt in LOVE with this in the first place. When you grow old on the Games, somethimes you forget that.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

"mainly because i like them" is really the best reason to collect an army in this game. as i said in another thread a few days ago, given the time investment into a 40K army to assemble and paint a full size army, it kinda needs to be a labour of love or else you loose heart and trail off.

wolves are a very fun army, my regular opponent has them as his main army and their certainly capable of schooling me. they are a great force if you like conversions, with a lot of room for funky "viking" extras to spruce up the pimaris parts of the army. You can get a lot of fun stuff form 3rd party retailers as well, although i would caution you about that if your planning to play mainly in your local GW store when that starts hosting games again, as the current policy is "GW only or GTFO", (although i have no idea how or even if they enforce that). very melee focused, they get a lot of bonuses in melee if you get it right (extra hits on a 6 to hit ("exploding 6s"), while in assault doctrine, being a big one). Thunderwolf cavalry is a nasty unit for them, especially if kitted out right ( i think my friend runs his with lighting claws and storm shields, but he had to 3rd party mod them to get that.) they have 10" movement and advance & charge, so that gives them an average threat range of like 17"...which is nice.

your right about the Imperium magazine using different moulds to the regular set. they are mainly using the "easy build" kits they created for various starter sets for it, which makes sense for a "Intro to the hobby" magazine, but your right, the moulds are a bit more worn..

im sure thier a few local wargaming clubs outside the GW store scene itself, and if you ask around the store or other retailers i am sure they can tell you where and when they meet. And, of course, if your in derby, then Nottingham, with the HQ of Games Workshop and Warhammer World, is next door. I would highly recommend going to it if you can, its not to expensive, only £7 entry (though you exit the museum straight into a large GW store, so it can get expensive ), and the dioramas they have are genuinely jaw dropping. they also have a forge world outlet their, about the only place in the UK where you can buy FW resin kits over the counter.

Ah, yes! At first it’s the ‘ooooh’-ing and the ‘aaaah’-ing. But later, later it’s the running, and the screaming!

But seriously, welcome to the madness - even if you are a ‘beaky git’ player :-)

I'd try the battlescribe app first, there's a free version and a subscription version with a few extra features but much cheaper.

It's unofficial but the guys doing the files keep things up to date.

As for space wolves do you plan on primaris only or a mix?

Many SW units are stronger than primaris units like greyhunters, wolfguard with jump packs and wulfen dreadnoughts are not in a bad spot either.

Just want to add that it is very easy to convert Firstborn units to Primaris scale with Assault and regular Intercessors, if you'd like more a unified look.

But then they look super generic and not at all like space wolves.

Plus you won't have access to the special weapons that you take grey hunters for in the first place.

Space Wolves, oh... I don't think we can be friends now. LoL, Just kidding.

In all seriousness, liking the theme and feel of an army is the best way to pick IMHO. What is strong will wax and wane in as the years and editions go by, but as long as you feel a genuine connection to your army, you'll always have a good time with it.

Arms, Heads, Shoulder pads, Backpacks and accessories are all compatible with Primaris, so you only miss out on a few specific bits. You can have your special weapons and a wolfy look imo.

I bought the Wolves SC box and picked up a tonne of helmetless heads and wolf bitz on ebay.

add some greenstuff fur, and the primaris wolves look ace.I'm yet to encounter a single player that takes issue with me using them as Grey Hunters. Theyre all modelled with bolters and chainswords / daggers so there's no issue.

Sooner or later, i expect GW will upscale everything anyway and the days of mini-marines will be a thing of the past.

If that were true as wouldn't have the heresy beakies on the way.

They'll rescale truesons but I think they've abandoned replacing them.

Primaris did not wow people as much as they hoped.
