The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

Upstate, New York

Time to pick winners for the September round, where entrants were given the prompt “Heavy Metal”. Clanking plate armour, armoured walkers, tanks, oversized hammers, and enormous metal minis from the days of yore! Anything that goes CLANG! and is and immensely weighty, really! As always, feel free to vote for as many entries as you feel deserve recognition, and for any reason, be that the quality of the paintjob or modeling, the interpretation of the theme, the effort on show or anything else you think deserves a nod. You're also very welcome to leave some feedback for the entrants, and many of the images link through to the Dakka gallery, so throw them a vote there as well if you fancy.

The poll will run 5 days

That was a really hard vote this month; other than Freya’s obvious lunacy, the rest of the field was all at a very high standard, making it very difficult to pick out the ones I preferred. Well done everyone!

Okay I have to be honest, I had a super hard time voting this round. I love everyone's art so much and it's obvious that everyone has stepped up their game. Which is super exciting to watch. I can't express enough how cool it is to see everyone branching out and learning new skills! It's so cool!!!

With that said. I voted for the following in no particular order:
JoshInJapan : I know you tend to doubt your NMM but it's obvious you've gotten the hang of it. And I LOVE it. Great work in those old pewter bois. Your axe looks particularly crispy.

Chris56: Your NMM on that hammer tho.... so nice. Idk how many people looked at it but even the tiny panels on the handle are all perfectly painted with their own nmm shine. And then you have the gold too... fantastic. Only critique I can give is the face. A bit more contrast in a warm color for the shadows of his skin would set it off perfectly.

Thebaloondog: I know this is technically a painting contest but I very much appreciate that mini conversion there. The paint on it is also solid and no doubt that took a bit of time. Only thing I'd like to see is a bit stronger highlights in some areas.

DV8: I think people underrate big models like this sometimes. Highlighting like that is subtle but very difficult to do in red without losing vibrancy. You've done perfectly on it, keeping your color pristine and beautiful. Something I know i would struggle with if I were to attempt it. Well done my dude.

There are so many good entry's this month... I really wish I could have voted for more. There were a dozen or more people who are mostly shoulder to shoulder in this month and it makes me so excited to see what you guys come up with for halloween!!

Thanks. As always, the flaws really stand out to me, but I can see a lot of improvement with every project. It helps to have cool models to work with.

Once again, a lot of great models, with everyone pushing themselves to get better.

MangoChutney: It's not often that one sees plain military colors on a 40K model-- usually everything is bright primary colors highlighted to white. Your army green (sorry, I don't know for sure what you used) suits this model to a T.

Mr Nobody: Your paintjob is deceptively simple-- just desert yellow and metallics-- works great for this model. It really looks like it's seen some action. I seem to remember you saying you opted against hazard stripes on the doxer blade-- is that right? If so, that was probably the correct choice.

ManSizedTarget: I always love these classic models. Adding the box for the model's foot adds a little animation, which the original model lacks. I feel like the gems could be darker-- one often sees red gems built up from a black base coat. Also, the stripes on the left leg are a nice way to break up all that white.

Power Elephant: This is another one of your original sculpts, right? A delighfully unique model. I'm impressed by the reflected colors on the armor-- I haven't even attempted that in my own work.

Yorkright: Clean and crisp, perfect for Ultramarines. I wish I could see more of the detailed interior-- what little is visible in the photo makes me want to see the whole thing.

Rybrook: You've got a nice, clean red there. Reds are hard to highlight without ending up with either pink or orange, so you've struck a great balance. I'm not sure about the reverse highlighting on the hard edges of the bike-- it might help to have some exposed metal to sell the weathering. The purity seal is a nice way to show movement. I wonder how that guy steers his bike with that big-a** shield strapped to his arm...?

Paradigm: I like the very dark red you used, and the sparing use of wear really stands out nicely against it. The glowy power claws really pop.

I'm going to have to stop here, but I'll add more comments for everyone as I find time throughout the day.

Ahh the shield, its a terminator sergeant wrist shield that to protect the forearm and still have maximum elbow and wrist movement. I didn't really know where to put it till the model was assembled then it didn't really fit where I wanted it.

@Rybrook: Your model may be the ur-example of 40K: dude rides a ridiculously-oversized motorcycle right up to the enemy so he can hit them with his giant hammer.

    More comments:
Captain Brown: another fine Eldar unit. Those are Iyanden colors, right? The blue is much darker than one normally sees, which complements the very light yellow quite nicely.

KidCthulhu: That's an interesting little warband you've put together. The tengu is my favorite of the four.

DV8: Here we see another variation on red. The little trees on the base are a good touch-- without them the model might be a Dreadnought variant.

SmallChanges: It looks like you picked out each individual "hair" on the model, which must have taken a long time. I never would have thought to clothe a model in orange, green, and purple. Very bold choices.

FrozenDwarf: I love me some non-Gundam mecha. I like the drab desert colors, and it has just enough weathering to look like it's seen some action, but not so much as to distract from the paint job.

Tallandra: I wouldn't have thought to paint Deathwing models in so many different colors. I get the sense that these guys don't care if the enemy sees them coming.

the_balloon_dog: This guy is really grody, which I guess is what one would expect. I was a little confused by the bike at first, as the streaky browns read as wood to my eyes. In fact, I choose to think of it that way, as a guy riding a wooden vehicle into battle in the 41st millenium is pretty dang metal.

Jamie Shred: I think "red" might be the secondary theme for this month's challenge. How on Earth does that guy steer his bike with that huge equipment?

Viterbi: The maroon and green are a really striking combination of colors.

Pariah Press: Ooh, another Oldhammer unit. I like the freehand designs on the banner. I didn't know they were followers of Chaos, though. I kind of assumed they were Imperial Fanatics.

Maharg: The tarnished copper armor goes quite nicely with the cool blue skintones.

Nevelon: I know I sound like a broken record, but I remain impressed by the depth of color you get with your multiple-thin-coats method.

Chris56: What a neat idea. I like the bloody ring of infection between the gold armor and the diseased face.

Vejut: What a fun model. The metallic blue/purple on the beetle really draws the eye.

More comments later. I'm having a great time looking at everyone's work this month!

I voted for about 10 people this month but Freya has to take the rhyming confection....not only is the model exceptionally cool, the painting is wonderfully shaded with great freehand. Awesome!

    Congrats to everyone participating again!
I limited myself to five votes, which was really tough this month. In no particular order:

the_balloon_dog: Very interesting and different theme, and very well executed. At first I thought the big horns were the handles and he was riding a chopper.

Maharg: I always like Greenskin that are painted a little different. Fits them very well, especially with the way you painted the metal.

Freya: Not too much I can add on top of what's been said already. 10/10 coolness, and with an awesome paintjob on top of it.

MobileSuitRandom : Very rugged look for Stormcast Eternals, but I think it suits them well.

ms07b3: Very different approach to most of the other stuff here. But it looks great to me, and that's what counts.

@JoshInJapan: I wanted the same scheme for the armour I'm using for the rest of the chapter, then wanted the robes to set them apart from the rest, and somehow got there. I feel like the Knights care even less about being seen than other marines though.

    Last round of comments.

Freya: The only thing that could make this model even more metal would be if Jesus were riding on his back. I love the strings of spit in the mouth. You said you did the armor in oils, right? I may have to try that myself sometime.

Gulgog TufToof: The dark green ork skin contrasts nicely with the red squig. The choice of brick red rather than the standard Citadel Very Bright Red is a nice, naturalistic touch, if anything orky can be called "naturalistic."

Tyranid Horde: The splotchy highlighting is a nifty way to make the model seem old while still keeping it bright. The subtle rust spots are a nice touch.

MobileSuitRandom: These guys look like they've seen their share of action on the battlefield. Much darker than one normally sees with SCE.

Midget Gems: A classic Ork conversion/kitbash. The Land Speeder blends really well with the Trukk bits (those are Trukk bits, right? It's been a long time since I've seen one IRL.)

ms07b3: I have really enjoyed the large models you enter in the challenge. The face in particular turned out well on this one-- the subtle pink shading and the reflections in the eyes are great.

Arakasi: As I commented on your P&M blog, it's a shame you weren't able to get this piece finished to your satisfaction in time. That said, if you hadn't come clean, I would thought that only the base was left.

bantha_beast: Classic red and blue. I don't see any chapter markings-- is this a Crimson Fist dread?

Turaxa: This is the best face I've seen you paint so far. The darker skin and shading around the eyes really help a lot. I think that much darker (approaching black) shadows between the warm and cool whites would improve the model even more.

Once again, congratulations to everyone who entered. As far as I'm concerned, everyone who gets something finished is a winner!

Yep the model was another acrylic base with oils over.

I airbrushed the models skin in magenta and then layered samurai green (kimera) and then a blend of phtalo green and cold yellow over it. After that I hit the armor with silver Grey (a bluish Grey). Then I just went into oils. Did the whole model in oil paints using mostly Windsor Newton artist series. I was honestly terrified of the armor. But it turned out to be very intuitive. A small mix of black and white with some blue for the hue I wanted and then some white and yellow for the highlight. A tiny bit of blending and it was done.

Freehand was actually super fun. I learned a trick to make it easier. Mechanical pencil is perfect for sketching over paint and gives a good reference point when applying paint.

Hi All havent done a full comment set for awhile so here goes

MangoChutney – A nice change in the green and very cleanly painted.
Mr Nobody - That tank looks really well weather, prefect for a grot tank
ManSizedTarget – Good free hand and color combo
Power Elephant - great NMM and interesting but suitable OSL as well. Good job
Yorkright – Those edge highlights much have taken ages, well done for getting them all in.
Rybrook - Classic bike and clean colors looking good
Paradigm - looking pretty sweet with nice details and weathering
JoshInJapan - great detail on these models and nice NMM
Captain Brown - They look very "eavy metal era eldar and are done really well.
KidCthulhu - A colorful character combination well done.
DV8 - rather impressive color transition and freehand (bigger photos please)
SmallChanges - I mean who doesn't like a badger warrior, good stripe
FrozenDwarf - Some interesting models i have never seen before, good suitable weathering on the muted palette
Tallandra - I can barely see them but once zoomed in and on the single model shots they look well painted
the_balloon_dog – wow thats an amazing bike, great painting and weathering.
Jamie Shred - nice clean paint job with good highlights and details well done.
Viterbi - I've always liked these models, well painted and well done.
Pariah Press - Some good detail on these guys and i like some of masked faces expressions.
Maharg - Nice color choice with the reds/bronzes and blues. very well painted as well
Nevelon – Nice work mate, glad to see the army is still growing
Chris56 – very cool to show the corruption spreading across what was once a clean armour. Very well executed and base is great.
Vejut – Really nice pearlescent effect to the beetles shell
Freya - WOW, awesome model and painting (bigger pics in the thread please but once you click and open them up they are amazing)
Gulgog TufToof - Great model choice, glad you got your hands on one Gulgog
Tyranid Horde - A very interesting light effect to your painting, like a cracking force field
MobileSuitRandom – These guys look very heavy, good choice of metal colors and a nice bright base to contrast.
Midget Gems – A half decent conversion the bits went together quite well, forgot to paint your grots toes, noob. Need to sort of camera and lighting if main one is dead.
ms07b3 – She looks wonderful, and nice detailing on the armour.
Arakasi - Nicely weather and dirt and some good freehand as well
bantha_b - The Blue looks lovely, would have liked bigger pics to really see all the details and effort you put in
Turaxa – Clean single colurs and detail on the belt buckle, a good base paint layer to improve and add things to

It's got some really nice colors in it. I got the full lines now. I have to say, silver Grey is like the one color I need a half dozen of. It's perfect for all silver metals and I love it. I've not been able to try all of them yet but so far, the samurai green you just saw on this big boy. The cartucci red also... and kiwi brown (definitely one of my other faves). I mean to try more of them soon... so much to test!

Midget Gems: Clever idea using the land speeder as the main body. The various ork bits seem to fit together quite nicely and looks ready to tumble across the wastelands. I'd love to see something a bit more dirty. Maybe some blackened gun barrels or exhausts. Maybe an extra wash on the bare metal with some silver scratches and highlights. Just a few extra details to sell the ramshackle design.

Arakasi: Glad to see that the old deff dredd is still looking great. The soft edges on the glyphs are nice. I assume that's a stencil and airbrush? It's a great overall paint scheme (just get those skulls painted ).

Tough choice between the Chaos warriors, Eldar Wraithguard, Tengu and the Dakksaurus Rex. I think the simplicity of the Chaos Warriors make them my number 1, although I would love to see how that Dakkasaurus Rex was converted!

Thanks! They sure as heck didn't feel simple when I was painting them. Your reaction makes me feel like I succeeded.

    Now showing Samurai Marines!

Painting total as of 3/18/2024: 14 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

    Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

The rex was a 3d print. All I have to do is queue it up and press play

I really love a simple and clean look and you really nailed it! I'm really impressed by how well you made all the various shades of brown stand out distinctly, wish I painted half as good!

I paint everything brown- it’s kind of my trademark.

Another month, another round of winners! Amazing work from everyone. I know I sound like a broken record, but everyone just keeps getting better and better. Tight round this month, but we do have a few to recognize on the podium.

A tie for third, with 22 votes each.
First up is the_balloon_dog's Agwe, Petro Loa of the Mortifactors. Winning the bike race over the other biker lords, he cruises to a bronze.
    Spoiler:

But shares that spot with ms07b3’s Sister of Battle, purging the heretics on a scale not normally seen!
    Spoiler:

Edging them out by one vote (And in the process knocking the two painters with 20 votes each from sharing bronze while he shared silver) is JoshInJapan’s classic Chaos Warriors. Heavy Metal in the literal sense, he’s done a great job bringing these classics to life.
    Spoiler:

And in first place, living up to the hype of the proof picture, is Freya's Dakkasaurus Rex. It’s over the top crazy, covered in guns and armor. King of the Dakka Lizards.
    Spoiler:

Thank you once again to all the participants. We have a wonderful community here, and it’s great painting with all of you every month. It’s never too late to enter, so break out the spooks, scares, and trick or treats for October if you haven’t already!

the others above me were all well deserved, think I voted for all of them... but think we all knew when seeing the insanity of Dakkasaurus it would be a runaway winner....

I'm honored to be standing on the podium, in the company of Freya, the_balloon_dog, and ms07b3. In my book, every entry was a winner, and it is always a delight to participate in these challenges. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with for October!
