What's the difference between CSM's mentality that were alive at the HH and survived vs new recruits or is there any?

They're likely to be more bitter about things. Lots of "back in my day".

Also more likely to have a few screws loose. Or not have any screws left at all...

Obviously plenty of Heresy-era Astartes still have their marbles and are cold, calculating gits like Abaddon, but prolonged exposure to Chaos generally doesn't do nice things to anyone's sanity. For every Abaddon, there is gonna be a Kharn.

The HH era Chaos Marines probably complain a lot in the barracks about the music that the new Recruits listen to. They also comment whenever possible how much tougher induction and training was for aspirants in their day. They also resent that the new Recruits don't give them enough respect and are not as committed to the organization as they are. They also point out that in their days they partied in the barracks on nights off while these new Recruits just spend their off-time playing video games. Not proper Chaos Space Marines at all.

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

"You had to really sin against nature to get noticed by a chaos god, now all these kids just go to after school Chaos clubs. Sing bloody hymns to Nurgle. Back when a were a lad you had to undertake a galactic wide schism and nearly bring humanity to its knees before you became a heretic. It were none of this separate warbands neither. Proper legions it was. And heavy bolters were 3 bob a piece".

"I needed a new Emperor for my Imperium. So I decided to go to Earth, which is what they called Holy Terra in those days. So I tied a Loyalist skull to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the Warp cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of Horus on 'em."

Though these are Great Crusade era SM. Good quality ones, made when materials and time was plentiful. A lot of CSM made during Heresy itself were made from random, often tainted or bad quality seed, using rushed processes - these are going to be low quality junk even though they are technically still HH era ones.

As for Kharn, his current state has more to do with lobotomy than warp taint, he would be like Abaddon if not for that.

HH CSM really hate the emperor, they knew him and fought along side home and his sons. They let him take over their planets, fought his crusade and then rebelled against everything they believed in.

New renegade marines don’t really know anything about the emperor except their psycho indoctrinated ideas. Wouldn’t surprise me if those that rebelled more recently didn’t believe the emperor existed and it’s the imperium they have come to hate.

I would recommend reading Lords of Silence too if you are interested in this. It is of course primarily a book about a Death Guard warband but the divide between newer recruits and old veterans comes up a lot. It's mostly trough a DG lens but you can probably imagine similar disagreements existing in the followers of other Chaos gods as well. Without wishing to spoil too much let's just say newer recruits have a somewhat different relation to their Primarch than many of the old vets, although that is just the start of their differences.
