First of all - I have not seen the new film, I quite enjoyed the DC Casino Royale but the rest were increasingly (for me) awful, bleak, drab, Bourne wannabee films with Spectre being the worst of the bunch - lathergic and oh so tired seeming - it seemed to me the francise needed a new path or to be put down..

I enjoyed the SC, RM and PB films - I like the over top nature of many of them and now look to Mission Impossible to provide this experience as Bond no longer does.
I used to own all the books but....tbh I prefer the (older) films.

But what do you want from a Bond film?

A modern Bond film?

A spy story with lots of action and humour, without ending up an actual comedy, like Kingsmen. Not really believable but not a cartoon either. Mission Impossible is a good example of the "vibe" I think it suits a modern Bond movie.

Starring a protagonist in his/her (yeah, I'm definitely open to female Bond!) late 20s, 30s or 40s at most. Not another 50something (let alone 60+!!) immortal super agent

From the last movie I loved the fact that is Bond the one who feels attracted by the charming women he encounters, not the opposite, and I wish it's something we'll continue to see in the upcoming episodes.

I think all the Sean Connery and Roger Moore films are solid, things went downhill from there. I liked the two that Dalton did, though I like them as action films, I don't really consider them Bond films.

For me Bond is about gadgets and over the top action, much like yourself. I didn't really get that from Craig, though haven't seen all his films.

I'm not sure what it would take to get me to love Bond again. I watch a lot of Marvel films, and while they're not similar I feel this gives me the action fix I need. It takes a lot for an action movie to get my attention. I haven't seen Mission Impossible since the second one, though from what you say maybe I should give those a go. I never liked the Bourne films.

I can't see Bond changing direction much with whoever the new Bond will be. I think it's great that a British franchise is still so successful and getting so much recognition, I just don't think that Bond is for me any more.

the most important feature of a Bond film is the over the top action, gadgets and some humour but "they" are taking themselves still serious and act if all those over the top things are a normal Tuesday

this was the biggest problem with the Brosnan films, the final product was like a joke/parody of previous ones with the action started to be silly (they are more like a F&F movie), were something like Moonraker works because you never get the feeling that any of the characters does not take it serious

Also Bond movies are only as good as their villain and the plan. Without a good villain who has a plan that makes sense, there cannot be a good Bond movie.

To me Bond films should always be campy and over the top. There's no point making them serious when you're dealing with super villains and whacky gadgets.

I haven't really enjoyed any of the new Bond films, except perhaps Skyfall. A lot of that was down to Javier Bardem.

I miss the hidden evil lairs, and the wacky places M would have hes "field" office.

The over-the-top hidden lairs located in absurd places is ofc waht i enjoy the moust. Last evil lair that qualify as one would prolly be in goldeneye, but my favorites is the volcano in you only live twice, and that oiltanker that i cant remember the movie title of(stromberg).

No Time To Die actually ticks a lot of these buttons if you ask me.

I won’t explain why, because spoilers. But my main impression was “this is the most Bond that Bond has Bonded in a while”.

A lot of what people are saying they want to see in a Bond film are the bits I dislike the most!

I like my bond to be a bit more grounded. A suave super-spy driving an amazing car who goes on globe-trotting adventures to beautiful and exotic places, with exciting action sequences. A bit of flirting and playful banter is optional, as is the sense of levity. I like that bond is largely re-invented each time the part is recast and that it continuously modernises.

I’m not a big fan of the overly convoluted schemes to take over the world, or the outlandish gadgets. But they do have their place.

The mission impossible films scratch a lot of the same itches as a bond film. As did the bourne films. The mission impossible ones for the globe trotting and the spectacle, bourne for the spycraft.

I’ve never particularly liked the Roger Moore films, and other than Goldeneye, don’t much care for the Brosnan films, but I do like Brosnan as Bond. That being said, I think I like Goldeneye more because of the N64 game than the film itself. I didn’t much like George Lazenby, or OHMSS.

Connery and Dalton were my favourite Bonds, and I quite like Craig, but the films have been distinctly hit or miss. I liked Casino Royale and Skyfall, but not Quantum of Solace or Spectre. I haven’t seen No Time to Die, and probably won’t until it is available for streaming.

My top 3 bond films in release order are From Russia With Love, The Living Daylights and Casino Royale.

A realistic, grounded spy movie? That would be VERY boring. Spies spend most of their time at desks, in quiet meetings with contacts, and servicing dead-drops. Carrying a gun gets you shot in most places Britain would want to spy on, so real spies never carry guns.

Grounded? In reality three-on-one fights only end one way unless the one is very skilled, and the three very UNskilled. This is just as true with guns as anywhere else.

So realistic and grounded is BORING and probably results in the villain's goons winning in the first act.

Now... going outside that, there's obviously a sliding scale. Austin Powers at one end and... well, pick whichever 'serious action spy' franchise you choose as the polar opposite. Bond classically falls onto the moderate funny side. Not a full-on spoof, but you're clearly not intended to take any of it seriously at all. You want something more 'serious' go to Bourne or Mission Impossible. Maybe John Wick. Don't expect Bond to be anything more than it is.

"Bond should be more serious" is a lot like going to a Godzilla film and saying "they should have done more with the plot". In a Godzilla film watching a 500' lizard destroy a city IS the plot, if you want more than that you're in the wrong theater. Likewise, gadgets, villains with impractical schemes, and tongue-in-cheek humor with a dash of action IS Bond. If you want something else, you're in the wrong theater... or working in the wrong franchise.

Four things essential.

1. Gadgets. They don’t need to be made of pure Narrativium, but they need to be there.

2. Quips. Perhaps dry, maybe corny. They still have to be there.

3. Bond Girls. Does not have to be in a sexist way. But they have to be there.

4. The Villain Explains His Plan. That is an absolute must too.

You can make these things as pofaced or camp as you like, but they’re the essentials.

So, I think part of the problem with trying to change Bond is that lots of people have successfully changed Bond. Trying to change Bond makes him feel generic, because you lose what made him unique in the first place.

I will say, I think Bond works best when he is the consummate professional. Carnage and chaos, lies and seduction are his 9-5, just another day in the office. It's what makes Bond fun, and unique, the idea that he's seen it all, trained for it and while not one step ahead of the villain, prepared enough to think on his feet and save the day without ruffling his cuffs.

You guys are all wrong.

What makes Bond Bond is CHARISMA. I want to see a charismatic and suave main actor, a good chemistry with the female lead, a larger than life villain and a plot which isn't too simplistic but doesn't dwell too much into twists for sake of twists, or nitty-gritty personal demons.

All the gadgets, quips, action and whatnot are just dressing. Sometimes the cake might have too much dressing, sometimes not enough.

That was my problem with Dalton and Lazenby movies: the actor did a fine job in terms of acting, and none of those movies are actively horrible, but there just wasn't enough sizzle and glamour.

I think Craig is an excellent Bond, having similar physical charisma as Connery but with more acting chops. However, most of his movies fail with finding good counterparts for him, instead of concentrating on action or Bond's emotional displays. Blofeld of the series was a massive disappointment, and as much as I love Seydoux, she doesn't have much chemistry with Craig and her character is written a bore.

To make one thing clear from the beginning:
James Bond is a fictional character as realistic as Batman and Superman. Yes, on the same level.

This is important as people who like the "modern" version often claim they watch a more realistic movie which is not the case because Bond is still thrown in situations in which no "real" person would walk away from.

The best JB movies were imo the early ones. Why? Because one of 007's main perk as a movie was to take the audience to exotic places on the planet but thanks to mass tourism in today's world this is no longer a sensation. So all the locations depicted don't feel special anymore.

The other selling point of JB is his attire and habits. When he is not in disguise he wears some kind of suit, drives expensive cars, drinks alcohol, smokes and dates only the most beautiful ladies. This character is a marketing tool for a certain lifestyle just as the protagonists (Don Johnson & Philipp Michael Thomas) of Miami Vice were in the 80s.

So he is the kind of guy you ALWAYS notice when he enters a room which is very detrimental for his spy profession but being on the same level as superheroes the audience doesn't mind because they are here to be entertained.

Gadgets. The more implausible the better. One of the above mentioned comic characters also uses them but I won't tell who it is.

Next item on the list is action. It needs to be stuff you have never seen before just like diving INTO a plane which is slowly going to crash or doing something which an Evel Knievel would pull off but unlike Evel Bond won't break a single bone in his body performing them.

Last but not least beautiful women. They come in two flavours:
Either so sweet to cause you toothache or a female fatale which can kill you with a withering stare.
This is the reason by the way why JB gets so much hate from the left. To satisfy him a woman needs to be truly gorgeous because he has standards just as every woman has when she selects a man for sex.

The "modern" belief/movement of body positivity would be as alien to him as is realism in any of his flicks. So it is no surprise that Craig's Bond gets called being a "dinosaur" in his OWN movie by writers from the far left for behaviour displayed by his predecessors.
Idiocy like this prevents me from watching a movie because I don't like being insulted.

That being said the old Bond style will never come back but I as a consumer can still watch the vintage movies.

My favorite Bond movies to date are: Dr. No, For Your Eyes Only, and Goldeneye. All three have their flaws, of course, but there are a few aspects that stand out to me:

1) Bond is a guy who Gets Stuff Done. In the books, he's not particularly suave or sophisticated. He's a professional (Fleming refers to him as a "blunt instrument"), and he enjoys high living, but that's only because the nature of the job means that he may very well die at any moment. Remember how he went to the health spa in Thunderball? In the books, he came back as a non-smoking, teetotaling vegetarian (not entirely sure about that last one...). When he learns that the nuclear weapons have been stolen, he goes right back to his old habits.

In Dr. No, he shoots Professor Dent in cold blood. In For Your Eyes Only, he pushes Locque off the cliff, and listens to his screams. In Goldeneye, the film starts with him and Trevelyan on what may well have been a suicide mission. All the scenes where he's dressed up, playing cards, and getting the girls? All that is a mask, which he takes off when it's time to do his job-- violence when non-violence didn't work.

2) Bond doesn't need silly gadgets to do his job. I know, they're fun, and I enjoy the scenes in Q branch, but I like my susperspy to get by on his wits, with only his fists or gun.

One last thing to consider is that the Bond movies are always Of Their Time. The films were made to appeal to a specific target audience, and those audiences have shifted over the years. Connery's Bond raped Pussy Galore-- consent wasn't part of the conversation at the time. Roger Moore somehow stumbled into a Blacksploitation film, a genre that was popular (although past its peak) at the time. Dalton fought the same sort of mobsters and drug runners that so many action heroes of his time did. Brosnan's bond fought a media mogul and North Korea.

Movie studios have always existed to make money. To maximise profits, they have to make movies people want to watch. Many posters in this thread like previous versions of Bond, and that's absolutely cool with me-- there is room enough for everyone to enjoy what they like. Personally, I've quite enjoyed Craig's Bond. He's not Connery, Moore, Lazenby, Dalton, or Brosnan, but then again, he shouldn't be. I'm rather looking forward to seeing his final foray once it's released here.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

Isn't Bond at this point a little bit like Star Trek, where it's actually easier to come up with a parody that makes everybody laugh than a sincere version that actually pleases everybody? We want Bond to be gritty and nihilistic, but also funny and a bit campy. It's a really tough balance.

For me, I'll just vibe with the music video with the dancing spy/villians:

It isn't, because there isn't any reason to bother trying to 'please everybody.'
The gritty and nihilistic crowd can just be skipped. Even if that crowd is actually a 'crowd,' rather than a few online complainers, odds are they'll go anyway, so the money is on the table either way. It doesn't matter if they complain afterwards.

M called Bond a 'sexist, misogynist dinosaur' already in GoldenEye(1995). Even back in the sixties he was viewed that way. Fleming never intended him to be a paragon of virtue or a generic white hat.

A lot of people mention Bond girls as a necessary part of a Bond movie, but what happens if next Bond becomes a woman? Would you need charming Bond boys to fullfill that requirement?

I wouldn't mind a female Bond for example, as long as the actress gives a solid representation of the character and the movie is well written and directed.

Craig is by a large margin my favorite Bond. Brosnan had 1 good movie (Golden Eye) the rest were garbage that became more garbage as they went (though the word is not enough is my favorite bond song).

There are fun movies before. I actually enjoy anything with Jaws and the voodoo stuff. But a lot of the older Bond movies just don't hold up at all. They are slow, plodding, and often include the typical of their time double fist hammer punches to the back. Connery just drinks until the problem presents itself and then he shoot it.

And we all know the slide whistle jump. Which is insane, because that car jump was actually done. It's not a model, it's not special effects. That car actually does that crazy awesome jump. And then they degrade the whole truley amazing stunt with a slide whistle. It's insane!

Craig is the first Bond that actually feels scary and capable. He is the Bond closest to Bond in the books. QoS is pretty great if you watch it back to back with Casino, which is frankly amazing considering the writers strike. The director and Craig were writing scenes and dialog on the day to make that movie. The fact that it's anything at all is incredible. Skyfall is fine, and Spectre is the worst of the bunch.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Who says the new female Bond likes guys - or just guys? The new Bond may like guys - it was not unknown amongst real spies especially from Oxbridge.

I like pretty girls but if they put pretty guys (or wahtever) in for others - fine by me.

All the features that make up a character are only important if it is actually part of their character. Wonder Woman being a woman, raised on an island of all female warriors, is actually a really important part of her character. It helps define a lot about who she is and what she does.

Bond is a paper thin template comprised of a few gimmicks and a couple catch phrases. There is no character to Bond. It's why you can get such wildly divergent takes on the character actor to actor and they are all still Bond. Bond being a female, male, any race, and any sexuality on the spectrum doesn't matter. So long as they like their martinis shaken not stirred, introduce themselves as Bond. James (Jamie?) Bond, and hook up at the drop of a hat with whoever happens to give them a glance it's all Bond. Chuck in a Aston Martin and a Walter PPK for good measure. The character really is that shallow. It really could be anyone and anything.

Daniel Craig having history and backstory and continuity between movies that actually makes him less of a newspaper comic strip cartoon is even a point of contention for some. He's such a nothing that some people don't like it when he becomes something.
