Hello folks,

A while ago I finished painting all my zombie models (total 220) that made it into my collection over the last twenty years with the result that I can create "Walking Dead" scenarios in 40K.

A few days ago I stumbled over the Riftbreaker video game again on YouTube (base defense vs. hordes of aliens). This inspired me to paint the rest of my genestealers which also lurk in my collection for about 15-20 years. Though they have only a count of about 80 models of which twelve are finished, the selection of the paint scheme was a bit too elaborate for units used as a horde:

- White Undercoat
- Black Undercoat (Claws, Tail tip and Spikes)
- Regal Blue, Blue Ink, Enchanted Blue and Ice Blue (Chitin)
- Liche Purple, Purple Ink, Warlock Purple and Tentacle Pink (Skin)
- Blood Red (Eyes)
- Black Ink (area around eyes and mouth)
- Snakebite Leather, Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone (Claws, Tail tip and spikes)
- Skull White (Teeth)
- Colour code for unit designation (Tongue: any striking colour possible e. g. green, yellow, etc.)

As a result of that I am a bit reluctant to continue despite the fact that another twelve genestealers are almost completed. So have you also chosen in the past a too detailed paint scheme that would hinder your progress?

I wanted my Druhkari to have a bright and vibrant scheme because I already own way too many armies with dark schemes. The raised armour is Moot Green with a Biel-Tan wash, the lower armour is Maccrage Blue with Drakenhof wash, the eye lenses are Averland Sunset IIRC, then metallics are Ironbreaker and to top it off cloth/weapon casings are Wild Rider Red with a Carroburg Crimson wash. Then it's an Astrogranite base, washed with Nuln Oil, dry brushed with Dawnstone and finished off with some scattered Snow.
It took me 9 months to complete my first 10 Kabalites and I haven't painted any more Druhkari since July.
I am a very very lazy painter and while I love how the models look in the end, I'm glad I never wanted to do things like highlights.

When I intitally painted my necrons I painted edge details and inset grooves in bright yellow. When Necrons got their big rework I tried to do it again, but there was just too many grooves to paint around, so they got a repaint that was as simple as I could make it.

Last summer, as I was sitting around enjoying(?) plenty of downtime thanks to the Pandemic I painted up 300+ WHFB/Sigmar goblins (and a few misc. orcs). Virtually all my goblins after all these years. Yay! There were only a few stragglers missed as they're in the D&D minis box over at a friends.

Not counting primer, many of my Forest Goblins ended up with around 12-17 different colors/shades/washes etc (varies by exact mini). Because old metal Forest Goblins have an amazing amount of tiny detail - clothing, jewelry, feathered headdresses, bone decorations, weapons, spider icons, eyes, teeth, tounges, etc etc etc.
Forest Goblins comprise about 1/3 of my hoard.
So not only was I painting 100+ Forest Goblins, I was doing 12-17 steps per goblin. :/
I love how they all turned out, as do all who've played against them, but....
Well, it was a good thing there was absolutely nothing else going on but a weekly trip to the grocery store & watching Netflix.

And then a few months ago as I was sorting the game room? I found a small unmarked box full of ...... more Forest Goblins! About 25 or 30some spear/shield. Likely a whole units worth of 30 as I know how I built spear units at the time these guys would've been bought.
{Sigh}

Painting that many goblins last year seriously burned me out. My output for 2021 has only been (as of this coming Thur) 54 minis.
{1 AoS wraith, 1 Battletech space fighter, 2 character models for the D&D players, & 50 NPC pirates.} Oh, and the skin on my 10 KT Orks.
I'm not really looking forward to repeating those 12-17 paint apps x30 - so it could be a good long while before I get this extra squad of goblins painted up.....

Edge-highlighting black on an Aggressor was a nightmare. It didn't stop me doing the scheme, but it definitely stopped me getting more than three Aggressors for my Deathwatch army.

I've definitely painted myself into a corner before with my Salamanders.

I had a rather involved painting process set up for my dark imp marines.

After painting up the box I bought more, painted that up to same standard, then went nuts with like 2kpts more and about 1k thru I just started to run out of steam.
Bought Admech and enjoyed the lack of green & gold. With that diversion out of the way I finished up the rest of unpainted Salamanders and now am focusing on EC/flawless Host using extreme colour pallette choices.

Do something different to tickle the other parts of your inner artist`.

Every Plague Marine. My original scheme was a kind of deseased camouflage. Even though I painted about 28 + characters in that scheme I've decided to go DG Green as a base color for the new ones in 8th edition, since 5base colors even before you come to horns, tentacles, lenses and all the details is just too much. They're still a terrible army to paint, even with a reduced scheme, and I'm good if I finish 10 of them in a year

My original Necrons were white, going for a kind of porcelain, smooth white even with my limited painting skill. When 9th released I realised I really didn't have the energy to paint another huge chunk of models in white so I repainted everything much more simply. It's actually helped because I feel like I'm making good progress on the army now, rather than resenting painting them.

This is literally me, 100% all the time, every time.

I have an even split between "Just deal with it" - like my entire massive genestealer cult army where every figure has about 24 different paint pots and that includes yellow with hazard stripes and glossy blue beetle-coat carapaces, and 'paint a few figures but decide it's not worth it' like my Tau where I painted one beautiful commander in a drawn-art style that I absolutely adored but which took like 8 hours of freehanding to do.

Mostly i resolve this tendency by having multiple factions that I basically dont have a single unified scheme for, and they just have every figure a different color scheme.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Pretty much. A decade ago I've decided that my first 40k army were going to be Nids and I will do them white, in Leviathan color.

I painted this or that depending on my frequent burnouts, but it took me 8 years before I was able to field a fully painted 2k army that made sense and wasn't just a sum of painted models.

The monsters were worst - each monster could take up to a month and I couldn't get the flesh right for a very long time. That was quite discouraging and demotivating.

Now I am at 10k points (roughly), fully magnetized and fully painted, I've optimized the process and the paints used in the process to the point where I can paint a unit or a monster in few days while still matching the looks and the standard of the previous models.

your mind

Yellow marines. Yellow Exorcist. White Sisters (now changed to muted steely blue). White guardians and banshees... sure.

Genestealers should be painted with contrast or similar imho.

Should go quickly and deliver good results, starting with a white or perhaps ivory undercoat and finish with a black ink for shadowy effects in those area that you want be be most scary. add the white back to the teeth and claws, color code your toungues, and whammo...

painting is a great hobby,

half of necron armies today look like Space marine primaris

well, my small argument against GW miniatures range is, that this models are not really looking good

i think, that a white metal dwarf, from 90s , was really something worth , to think

how to paint , shade

in overall i think, if the dice says "5", then models goes 5 steps ahead

if dice says, "2" , model goes 2 steps ahead

building, this system into something , playable fun is easy

model makes, actions , or moves

Automatically Appended Next Post:

but GW is trying hard,

to find alternative, for the simple system

and, game is shrinking, in 8th edition players was trading

via internet,

"2 by 5" milimeter, small adeptus mechanicus pistol

mechanicus looks terrible today

i am thinking, about Leviathan, Confrontation, Warmachine

this games had some fantasy atmosphere

but, gaming is more toward, Warzone ressurection

or, Dust 1947

i like this models from Dust,

Automatically Appended Next Post:

i'm still thinking about War cry

and, Underworlds,

this games allow using alternative

models

from , various Warhammer editions

i know - i was complaining alot about this, that the range of collection , is very big and it requires alot of work to build army

i think, smaller games give better ideas in play

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Aeronautica imperialis looks very intersting

well, painting fast is possible

without shades too

you just need to find , colors combinations

like

green, grey, dark green, yellow, and orange

blue, dark brown, snakebite leather, white

I should probably try the contrast paints.

I'm glacially working through some Tau - and having the whole base+wash+1st highlight and 2nd highlight does make them look good (imo anyway) - but equally it does mean they take ages.

And that's with 95% of the model being 3 colours.

I came up with a desert camo scheme to use on all the cloth bitz of my UM army, namely on Scout snipers, Eliminators, bases, and random tabards and such.

I have yet to finish the UM parts, let alone the Desert Camo.

Part of it is my painting style, which is to do base, highlight, wash, and then touch up, plus assembly line.

I'm on year 2. About 30 scouts done, and now Scouts aren't even good or gonna be around much longer it seems.

well, i just can say , if you have Zombies

you must also add Werewolves, for balance

game will look chaotic , Vampires cementaries , zombies

maybe skeleton tomb guards

the new primaris range really knocks down competition

i think, chaos in Warhammer is out of competition , by primaris

Absolutely empathise with all of this. I'm forever setting myself up for things I just don't have the skills or time to do justice to. God help me, I've just decided to do leopard-print loincloths on my Escher gang...

Put my Thousand sons to one side after a while, was a ballache to get all that trim painted, and then do the various stripes in white *then* yellow.

Also had trouble with the Tau. Went for the classic brown scheme with edge highlighting. After around 5 Fire Warriors and 2 XV8s it was just torture to continue, so I stripped them down and redid them Farsight red.

Will put now Alien with Sigourney Weaver into my XBOX and continue with the genestealers until the movie ends.

That's the way my Catachans got finished though used Predator, Rambo, Platoon and Apocalypse Now for them.

Need to rechannel that old magic.
