I've always been interested in space hulk, but I just don't know where i'd be able to play it. I know i could pick it up secondhand, but id rather make proxies first to see if i like it. I'm mostly just sending this into the void to see if their's anyone who can help me out. cheers!

If you can find a copy, just get it. It's one of those rare games where everyone I know who's played it, loved it. Or at least fondly remembers it, if they haven't played for years.

It even works fairly well as a solo game, because its usually fairly obvious what the genestealers want to do (mass as close to a marine as possible out of LoS, and then rush him).

The marines are all about positioning, best use of actions, setting up fire lanes and achieving the missions. So you play as the marines, with the genestealers doing whatever is best in the moment to kill them.

Still, 2 player space hulk is amongst the best things this hobby can offer. So get a friend to play you.

Long-time Space Hulk fan. Began playing it in the 90s with all the supplements like psi-powers and hybrids with heavy weapons.

Important:
SH is not for everyone. A single bad positioning can cause you to lose the mission. In addition the deck is stacked against you because the difficult level is really high. My mates back in school didn't like it at all.
So in my experience you either love it or hate it. No grey area here.

Long before the current edition came out I looked for SH tiles, blips and doors on the interwebz. Reason for this was that I sold the old edition of the game. Printed them out and glued 'em on plastic cardboard (don' t know proper term in English). With this and my 40K collection I was again able to play it.

Should you buy the newest edition of SH? It has one thing going for it which is terrific quality of the floor tiles. One look at them was enough to buy SH. And you also can play it solo. So it's perfect for the next Covid lock down.

im betting you could probably get the game without hte minis for a reasonable price, and then just use some terminators and genestealers not from space hulk and save yourself at least 100$.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

We'll probably see a new edition when the Gene-cults codex drops.

The FFG card game isn't too bad if you can get it, but a bit confusing in its setup and rules.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Only problem in your suggestion is, current 40K terminators need to be mounted on 28mm bases or they will not fit on the squares. GW solved this problem in the latest edition of the game by making the miniatures baseless.

I believe GW did this because they wanted people to be able to mix & match the floor tiles of previour Space Hulk editions

So you just buy 5 old termies.
Or if you're printing your tiles? You just up-scale them a bit.

There, "problem" solved.

Sorry but this is not true.

In my Space Hulk video series I am working on I am mounting the models on 32mm clear plastic bases, and they fit on the squares fine.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

Where'd you ever see a terminator on 32mm?

For several years (and certainly when the most recent Space Hulk version came out) terminators in 40k were on 40mm bases. The jump when it occurred in 40k was from 25mm bases (primarily metal terminators, but the original Space Hulk had terminators on 25mm bases) to 40mm bases for the plastic terminator boxes.

Space Hulk tiles use 30 mm squares, so 32 mm works for the most part but can run into problems when a good old rush hour scenario happens in tight spaces.

I know this, due to my eternal frustration, after making a 20 part start with a 3D board without the foresight to up the square size for potential 40 mm shenanigans. Still stings.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

As has been mentioned, if you just want to try the mechanics of the game (without spending much money) some of the console and PC games around at the moment lift the mechanics directly from the board game. There is Space Hulk Tactics on the PS/Xbox (I think PC too). There was also another PC Space Hulk game a while ago that copied the mechanics.

The scenarios and campaign system is different in the video games but think the 'core' of the game should be mostly the same, at least with the basic Action Points expenditure, moving the Terminators around and trying to cover corridors with Overwatch while not getting bogged down.

I really like Space Hulk just as a core game (I always thought it started to fall apart a bit when you start introducing hybrids shooting, power armour and things like that) - the rules are really simply but it's an excellent game and absolutely nerve-wracking as the marine player - there are few stomach-sinking moments in GW games like that feeling when you roll a jam on a stormbolter and don't have any command points to help the guy out!
