Hello everyone,

I wasn't sure if this was the correct place to ask this, but the other tabs didn't seem to fit this.

I have been a guard player for the last 13 years, and have always wanted to build Valhallans for a long time. Recently, I came into a decently sized force that includes the following (some more has been added to the original army as well, reflected below):

1 x Company Commander (Chenkov)
2 x Lord Commissar
6 x Flamers
5 x Meltaguns
5 x Grenade Launchers
3 x Lascannons w/ Team
2 x Heavy Bolters w/ Team
4 x Mortars w/ Team
7 x Sergeants
2 x Missile Launcher w/ Team
3 x Voxcaster
48 x Basic Infantry
2 x Tank Riders (for aesthetics)
2x Basilisk
1 x Hellhound
1 x Devildog
1 x Leman Russ Demolisher

It roughly comes to about 1,380 points in total.

What I would like to do is expand my forces. I'm much more lore oriented with little regard to the actual meta, and would like to keep it with the Soviet WW2 feel. I have been considering a Leman Russ (Demolisher variant is the biggest leaning idea), basilisk, hellhound, manticore, or devildog. What would be the recommendation to expand with? I want to hit 1000 pts initially and gradually round out at a 2000 point force. (Knowing myself... It will expand far more than that over time, as my initial Cadian army has reached over 7500 pts).

I votes LRD.
* this vote was not rules based. I've just always liked the model/turret.
But it re
ally doesn't matter. What matters is:
1) wich of these kits fit how you want to play?
2) wich of these kits do you want to build/paint?

Seconding Demolisher, it's a great fit for Valhallans. If you really want to lean into the Red Army side of things, there should be a few conversion kits to make it a not!KV-2. Manticore (not!Katyusha) would also work, as would Thunderer/Valdor (not!ISU/assault gun) if you're not afraid of going FW.

Another vote here for the Demolisher. But yeah, not sure why you're asking, just go with what you want. Especially if you're not particularly concerned about playing competitively.

I think Bullgryns wouldn't be a bad fit in this army, though that probably doesn't fit the theme you're going for.

Simple, MOAR basic infantry. If you want to go down the Chenkov route, your [strike]main[/strike] only strategy is to drown the enemy in bodies. This means 2 x 30 Conscripts at least, and then another 4 to 6 squads of Guardsmen without special weapons. Probably some Vox casters too for giving them orders from the Commanders who stay behind.

As for the Leman Russ, the Demolisher cannon is the best variant, period, right now. It also fits thematically as Valhalla fits the Soviet Deep Operation approach of relentlessly pushing forward on all fronts.

I thank everyone for your inputs on this. I know, many have said pick what I like, but the dilemma I had was liking a lot and unsure of where to begin, why I created the poll and asked the community. The options I had provided were the ones that I was split between. Since the the time I have put this up, I have ordered a Demolisher Leman Russ, a Hellhound, and a Basilisk as the starting armor support for my red army. As for the more infantry, that is the plan in the future, though Valhallan models are not the cheapest around (I was very fortunate to have stumbled upon the lot that I did), but I do plan to get more boots on the ground in the future.

Just out of curiosity, have you had a look at third party miniatures? Victoria Miniatures springs to mind, though there are probably other options out there too. One benefit of Victoria Miniatures is that you can add some women to your force. Not exactly cheap though. Also, I’m not sure how they’d look next to the old GW miniatures.

Jeff White: Since this post, I have added some more to my army (2 Basilisks are amongst them so I hope this brings a delightful smile to your face)

El Torro: I was looking at them as the means to build this force, until I came across the lot of the old pewter boys For now, I'm sticking with them, I have a lot to paint and all so I'll be kept busy for the time being. I will definitely consider them as a possible addition in the future though.
