checking competitive army lists for some tips. Don't see many Stormlords in competitive lists ATM - is it mainly because other Bane bade alternatives are better?
Looking for tips as the best way to play Stormlords?, for some reason I feel compelled to have this variant above the rest.... What's the best way to play them on the table top ?

Frankly speaking, pretty much all of the Baneblade variants are bad this edition for Imperial Guard. You pay a CP premium to include it in your army without them benefiting from your regimental doctrine and its guns are nothing to write home about. The stormlord's main selling point is that it acts as a super chimera in terms of letting heavy weapons teams and other shooting units inside fire with impunity. The problem is that not only is the Vulcan Mega Bolter a very underwhelming weapon (especially with the -1D rules all over the place currently) but the Stormlord really isn't survivable with the small amount of wounds they have and lack of save relative to their points. Point enough multi-meltas at it and its going to die. If you insist on using it, you basically have to treat it like a glorified bunker, putting heavy or special weapons squads into it and leaving it in the backfield with the best firing lanes possible. Ideally buff it up with psychic powers by giving it -1 to hit with NightShroud and the other IG psychic power that gives it +1 to its saves. I don't recall what kind of Tank Ace you really want to give it besides the one that let's you have access to regimental doctrine, if you make it Vostroyan Firstborn you can give it the +1 to hit strat which will be very useful.

You can use strats without the tank ace thing.

I think there’s one that lets it count as being in cover till it moves.

Correct! I use the cover tank ace and the two psychic powers (-1 to be hit and +1 armor save). Its still not that hard to destroy -- armies have to be tooled up to kill an Imperial Knight, and this is basically just a Knight with no invuln that costs more.

If you're going to take one, avoid the sponsons if you don't have them built on your model, they're horribly overpriced.

For the greater glory of the Zoat Empire!

The only fun things I can think of for the Baneblade transports is the stacking buffs for those inside it. What you can do in the Stormlord is:

1) Take 3 Command Squads with 4 plasma guns, and 3 Heavy Weapon Squads with 3 heavy bolters. Then you make them all Cadian so you can use the new strats.

You can move the Stormlord 10 inch and then use the new Shock Troops stratagem. This makes it count as stationary, as well as the units embarked, meaning all 7 units can now RR1 to Hit. They also all get +1 AP to their weapons, as modifiers to the transports affect the units inside.

That's not all though. If you trigger Overlapping Fields of Fire, then get the Stormlord to shoot that target for the +1. Then all units inside also get the +1 modifier, however, they're not restricted to shoot that target as they're not under the effect of the stratagem. So, those 6 units inside can shoot anything else with a +1 to Hit.

2) You make it a bomb truck. You can stick 3 Cyclops demolition vehicles in there and because their detonation is a shooting attack they can blow up using the firing decks, as well as use the Stormlord to measure the radius.

They can also benefit from Shock Troops, RR1 to Hit from stationary, and +1 to Hit.

* * * * *

Will these win you games? Probably not, but they're probably the best you can do with a Baneblade at the moment.

If you also don't believe me, I'll link you the rules.

Specifically these three points.

If the TRANSPORT model made a Normal Move, Advanced, Fell Back or Remained Stationary this turn, embarked units are considered to have done the same when they make ranged attacks.

Any abilities (including Detachment abilities) that models in an embarked unit have, or that their weapons have, continue to apply when they make ranged attacks.

If a TRANSPORT model is under the effects of a modifier to its ranged attacks (such as a modifier to its hit rolls, wound rolls, etc.) the same modifier applies each time an embarked model makes a ranged attack.

To make the transport to hit modifiers a bit simpler, a Vostroyan Storm Lord is a Vostroyan even in a super heavy auxiliary (just doesn't get the regimental doctrine). +1 to hit strat on the tank, applied to all occupants shooting from the firing deck (who do not have to be Vostroyan regiment).

While this does work. It forces you to remain stationary. You also don’t get the +1 AP.
