i have seen this:

+ No Force Org Slot +

Company Veterans [3 PL, 40pts]
. Company Veteran: Bolt pistol, Boltgun, Frag & Krak grenades
. Company Veteran Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Boltgun, Frag & Krak grenades

.. more and more lately. What role does these two models play in an army? I guess they bodyguard important things. But with no melee configuration, are they just there for the raw meat shield or what?

They are a pretty useful little unit, I like to pack stormshields and chainswords on mine for a few more points.

They perform two tasks - often at the same time.

They hide out of line of sight behind a wall or in a building while you can then have characters outside the terrain shooting, doing actions, holding an objective but being within the bodyguard range and thus not being able to be shot. Its pretty annoying to play against especially if you have no out of LOS shooting.

The other thing they do is being a cheap infantry unit, thus they are able to perform actions, hold objectives, stand in table quarters etr - just super useful for scoring various secondaries.
You will often see a unit of 4 servitors for this function as well.

Can be strategic reserved as well to be able to do actions in the opposite table quarters.

I think originally they where some elite unit with a lot of different things in it.

By the time 9th edtion rolls around they have been divided into different datasheets. The banner bearer (ancient), champion and apotecary used to hang out in that units. They stil have the rules they do not take up a slot if you have a unit of company veterans.

40 point skill monkeys are quite good. The only other codex units that have these cheap units are space wolves wolves and cyberwolves, and general servitors. This is very good as SM tend to have few units.

There are the tricks the other people talked about.

It also allows you to fill in small missing unit slots in landraiders, drop pods, rhinoes etc.

To bad they can not take jump packs or come in temrinator armour.

Don't forget: the Company Vets also have access to an insane amount of gear!

I've been planning to get a five man team of storm-shield/combi-plasma for my dark-angels to provide some extra shooting support with a bit more durability than usual, probably bodyguarding one of the named characters.

They are a VERY versitile unit!

I play crimson fists and have recently put 5 melta/shield vets and 4 claw/shield vets plus the CF chapter master Pedro Kantor in a drop pod.

He has an obsec aura and a +1a aura plus retools ones and chapter master rerolls (they won't count on t1 but still). so you pop down on an objective, fry a vehicle or just go somewhere to do something. when they come for you, your guys have tons of attacks and you can play an IF strat to give them even more if they're on an objective. its prolly too expensive for such an asset but its great fun and somewhat of a serious play.

I've also run a full melta pod with 8-10 vets and meltas. they kill one thing and cause a stir, but it probably seems underwhelming in the long run. They are rather cheap, though, compared to a grav pod or something.

A unit of 2 will arrive from strategic reserves, score engage on all fronts, and retrieve octarius data. The sarge gets a LC, and the other guy a SS, to make them more survivable, and give them some damage potential. Or you hide them behind solid walls, and the character in front of the wall cant be shot, because of their bodyguard rule.
