I sense somebody was influenced by akira.

Sadly Akita might’ve ruined Anime for me. It was so mind blowing as a kiddo, that nothing else has really compared.

Subtitled as well, as it couldn’t have been later than 1990.

One after that was Legend of the Overfiend. So….yeah!

Nothing at all against the wider medium, I just have a peculiar view on it

I think that is true for any starting point with anime.

I started a very long time ago when it was nearly impossible to get outside of japan, i also started with a show that had a more serious setting with a linear story arc (space battleship yamato) so my very selective collection of anime and my attitude towards styles are very different from say somebody who started in the 90s with dragon ball, sailor moon or gundam wing that showed up on US TV for first impressions. As i was already aware of the genres their troupes. by the time many of these shows hit mainstream expose outside of japan i had already watched them or had reviewed and took a pass on them. It is a far cry from today where they basically simultaneously release some shows domestically and internationally.

Akira in particular was shown at my anime club back when it was first released in japan in 1988 and fan subtitled. as with most movie productions it was a spectacle of beauty to behold, even if i was not into the story all that much.

There were quite a few movies back in the 80's and 90's that are still quite impressive to watch-macross do you remember love from 1985, silent mobius 1991, all the myazaki movies of course-nausicca 1984, laputa 1986, totoro 1988, kikis delivery service 1989, porco rosso 1992. dirty pair movie 1987, wings of honneamise 1987 and the list goes on...

I see you meant to say dark schnider , there is no manlier man....i mean he is a 400 year old evil wizard who's stated goal is to kill all the ugly ape faced men and take all the beautiful women for himself(and reset society while he is at it). And he is the "hero" of the setting.

That bastard ain’t got nothing on Kamina! He doesn’t need no 400 year old magic powers, he gets it done with overpowering resolve! Standing face to face with those bigger and stronger than him instead of picking on the weak!

Here are some of my favourites:

Bonaparte!

Tachikomas!

Mokoto Kusanagi (boring I know, but she is still awesome)

Alita (I thought the recent film was a decent re-telling of the tale, but I think the original anime film has more charm)

Briareos!

Anyone would think I was a little fond of mecha... Bring on full body replacement!

Narrowing to 5 is almost impossible. Part of what makes anime great is the overwhelming volume of fantastic characters both in design and conflict.

The top 2 that spring to mind are probably Spike Spiegel and Vash, the Stampede for me. After that, he's incredibly irritating, but Shinji Ikari needs a nod just for being such a thorough dissection of depression in an extremely engaging package.

Goku really deserves a place. He's not even the best character in his own series, but there are so many characters in anime that are Goku plus this twist, its hard to name any of them without having to mention their forebearer.

Last spot, lets go a little too modern, but I gotta respect Senku Ishigami. He's such a stupidly overpowered beacon of hope in an era where people need a serious reminder of how far basic science as brought us.

And those were just 5 that mean something to me. There's some serious greats overlooked like Light, Lelouch, Eren Yeager, Johan Liebert, Griffith that are truly great, three dimensional characters driven to extremes.

And that's just the boys...

Flinty

I must approve your choices, been a fan of shirow for a very long time(and GUNNM).

It isn't ghost in the shell without tachikoma/fuchikoima's i would add ana/uni puma to that list

Spoiler:

.....do tachikomas count as pets?

Hah. I had forgotten that my list is basically all Shirow

I just love his design language.

Amd I don’t know about pets, but they should be mandatory

Wow… so I was just sitting here thinking of some of the other anime stuff I’ve see , and I remembered the utter bizarro weirdness that is FLCL, and El Hazard, where “what you call a cat, we use as living body armour.”

Good times
I guess I should add Ifutita to my list

Let's see-
Himura Kenshin (good call on Vash, there's nothing like a cheerful goofball that is actually death on two legs)
Lord Momonga- from any other perspective, he's amoral and evil as they come, but in the Overlord series he's a shockingly loyal protagonist for his people.
Yomiko Readman- the nerdiest of nerds, that acquired her awesome powers by loving books too much. R.O.D. was her anime.

Klawz-Ramming is a subset of citrus fruit?

Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Picollo (Dragonball)
Simon (Gurren Lagan)

OOF, top 5 is a really tough list. As mentioned above, you could really break it down to top 5 protagonists, top 5 antagonists (like Yoshikage Kira or guys like The Major from Hellsing Ultimate) and top 5 supporting characters because there's just so many good ones tbh.

1. Greed/Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood)
2. Joseph Joestar (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)
3. Vegeta (Dragonball)
4. Alexander Anderson (Hellsing Ultimate)
5. Kazuma (Konosuba)

I know it is tough that's why i broke my list down by male/female characters/pets.

It is even worse for me because my list is so large given how long i have been watching anime.

i could easily double my list and many posters here probably would not know what anime they were from.

Huh.

Are we allowed to pick Abridged Series characters?

Cause if we can, then Abridged Vegeta, Abriged Tien, and Abridged Kirito make my list XD

Especially Abridged Kirito.
