My group is hooked on classic BFG these days. The campaign system from the original rulebook is absolutely brilliant.

However to spice it up, we incorporated the ability to also play 40K battles as part of the campaign.

Campaign Theme Narrative: Captains & Heroes

In this region of the galaxy, no one faction has the resources or the will to launch a protracted campaign to acquire territory. However small skirmishes and raids continue unabated. This is a time for heroic fleet captains, and ground commanders to rise, taking advantage of the perpetual low level conflicts to amass their own personal power on the way to greatness.

Rules: Uses the BFG Campaign Framework

Changes: Players are limited to the BFG raid scenarios only.

-Substitute the cruiser clash intro scenario for a Warhammer 40,000 battle. (Can also be agreed upon).

Warhammer 40 K Battle Rules:

-Limited to maximum 1000 points.
-The 40 K winner inflicts D3 damage on an enemy capital ship at the end of the campaign round. (Yes this can destroy the enemy capital ship).
-40K winner successfully attacking an enemy system allows the winning player to use the attacked system to repair damaged ships just like a normal BFG raid.

Renown Effects of 40 K Battle:
+1 Winning
+ 1 for each 100 VPs earned rounding up.

-1 for losing
-1 for each independent character lost.

Something that was done as part of a larger Mega Battle at Dakka Dakka when it was a store, was to have a game of Battlefleet Gothic and a small game of 40k going on at the same time.

The game of 40k was on an "indoor" board and the results of the game had an effect on the ongoing game of Battlefleet Gothic. The armies were essentially boarding parties fighting over a station that could be used against either fleet. While I know this is impractical, just a thought.

Does it have to be full 40k though? I feel like games of Kill Team could be more fitting and easier to make themed to your campaign. Small clandestine groups fighting over a comms relay station to stop word of their fleet being relayed, gain control of an asteroid based cannon, assassinate attempt on a ship commander while their craft is docked for repair.

Would allow to to make the game of Kill Team have in game benefits like allow the winner of the game to have deployment benefits (due to controlling the information of where their fleet will be), have an asteroid based cannon added to the game that starts under control of the Kill Team game winner, or have one ship commander have to be replaced for the match as they recover from injuries sustained during the assassination attempt/give a buff to a ship squad's leadership for the game to represent their anger at the enemy trying to kill their commander.

Feel like it would be fun to explore more than just a bonus/negative to renown and a few points of damage on an enemy ship, and make it a bit more interactive with the game of Battlefleet Gothic.

I had thought about that same thing. Kill Team seems like the perfect fit for this type of combined game campaign.

If I get kill team, we'll definitely incorporate it into this style of campaign.

If anyone else out there has tried anything similar, let us know!

Very curious - what did you like about the BFG campaign rules? I completely missed this game in my youth, and GW can't reprint it fast enough...!

I sure hope we see it redone soon (ish)

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

Why should it be reprinted?

Rules are free:

(Rules hub with all official and unoffcial rules and more).

Miniatures are easily available. For example battlefleetgalaxy, scourgescenics, vanguard miniatures and godforgeminis.
Or if you have a 3D printer or one near there are many options.

Really, BFG is easy to start these days.

The campaign system is great for a small group of casual players. It's relatively simple. You play a game, you gain or lose renown, you get promoted or demoted, and then you get a chance to repair your damaged ships using the systems you control. Highest renown at the end of the campaign period (for us it was 1 month) wins.

What I particularly enjoyed was to use the campaign for developing fluff for an entire sub-sector, and than using the BFG campaign results to kick start Warhammer 40,000 games. I.E. Because of the character and story development during BFG, my group wanted to continue the story with 40K!

In my case, we had this bad Chaos Space Marine dude that was commanding the Chaos Fleet. After his fleet was defeated, we decided the space marines were going to go attack his base and try to kill him. (They succeeded) so now we're going to decide whether to do another 40K campaign, some BFG stand alone games, or a new BFG campaign!

To me it makes sense. Start a campaign at the highest strategic level, (BFG, Subsector) than work your way down to the micro level, (40K, Killteam, Inquisitor, fighting for individual planets)

You can see some pictures on the Graildark Nebulae campaign on my blog.
