Hi all,

First model I've painted for what I hope will be my first proper chapter of space marines. Very much not the first model I have every painted I have been going on and off for 20 years.

Very much looking for C&C as I feel I am at the point where I won't get better without it.

Also keen for any thoughts on the colour scheme itself as it's taking a long time to make a decision.

Read the rules, don't think I've broken any but apologies if so.

Ok, having some issues getting the rotation right... should have previewed first. Phew. OK.

Welcome to Dakka.

(All IMHO, take with a grain of salt)

First off, he looks just fine, and an army of him and his brothers would do the Emperor proud cleansing the galaxy.

You have selected a very muted palette. Nothing inherently wrong with that. It lends itself towards gritty weathering and not parade ground clean. It can also make it harder to find focal points on the model; places where it “pops”. Great for realistic warriors, less for game prices you see at arm’s length. I might focus on brightening up the lenses, and adding a highlight edge on the white/red to bump them up a bit.

The base is similar to the armor colors. Different people have different ideas on if it should complement or contrast. I go with the second, as it helps accent the mini. YMMV.

What are you planning for chapter/squad markings? These can affect the overall feel of the model. Personally with my Ultras (which are a darker blue then stock) putting those clean white symbols on really adds something to the feel.

The purity seal mirrors other colors on the model, so blends in a bit more than I’d like.

Paint does look a little thick in places, although that might just be the lighting.

I like the dark leather holster/pouches.

Thank you.

Yeah I have, I was trying to find something between Grimdark and the typical bright colourful paint schemes. Something more real. I'd like to weather at some point but don't have the confidence yet. I'm not 100% sold on the colour scheme.

I'll try that thanks.

I honestly didn't realise it was but after drybrushing it, yes, it is. What would you recommend? Grass/green perhaps?

I've never got so far as that before but I suppose if I am doing a proper army I need to give it some thought.

So in my head canon I don't think they would hand out a second colour of scripture just because the armor is too close a match. But... maybe I should disregard that and find some way to make it stand out a bit more.

Nope it is thick in a few places I need to work on that.

You didn't have any issue with the white trim? I thought that didn't quite look right to my eyes.

Thank you very much for taking the time.

Either a green/grassy base or possibly a red base would work well I think as it would contrast well with the blue.

If you want to keep them the same color one thing you can do is have them be different levels of shading with the armor a lighter bone color and the parchment as darker.

"You didn't have any issue with the white trim? I thought that didn't quite look right to my eyes."

That is something I noticed right away and I agree that it doesn't compliment the bone armor very well. Not sure what to use though. Maybe a dark grey.

I’m not a fan of the blue shoulder pads and backpack. I like the rest of the model (red weapons always gets a thumbs up from me) but the blue just doesn’t seem to fit.

Perhaps a brighter blue would fit better imo. Or even the same red you have used for the weapons (might be a bit garish for what you’re going for though).

I think even having the backpack the same bone colour as the rest of the armour might work.

I think overall the scheme works. I like the white, as it gives a nice focal point to the otherwise muted colors. The blue is a nice nod to the heraldic nature of marine colors, but not to a crazy impractical level. In a Codex compliant chapter, white trim is normally a sign of the 1st company veterans, so it’s a normal thing to see.

For the purity seals it’s for entirely artistic reasons I suggested changing. What you have looks nice, it just blends with the armor too much for my liking.

Looking at a color wheel and what you have already, I think a green grass base would probably set off the mini better.

I feel a bit stuck on that one as they are first company and should be white trim right?

Tried a brighter blue and yeah, looks nice I think. Certainly stands out at distance in a way it didn't before.

On the backpack, I feel you need it to contrast the head. If the backpack and helmet are the same colour it just sort of mushes together (IMO). And what from I can tell the backpacks either match the core armor colour or the shoulder pads. With a few odd exceptions ( Executioners )

Thanks!

I'll definitely change up the purity seals.

Ordering some static grass so I'll give that a go, I find the idea of Space Marines wandering through a meadow a bit odd but I can see it will contrast better.

I quite like the idea of one shoulder pad being a different colour, mainly because I like the idea of a Dreadnaught with one arm a different colour, but in practice. I don't know it seems cluttered.

Spent a lot of time looking at the existing chapters. For the most part they seem to stick to both shoulder pads the same colour with one or two exceptions.

I also spotted if they have a kneecap painted its usually not the same colour as the shoulder pads but something different.

The colors seem to go together but the blue looks somewhat black at times, but it works.

Paint seems heavy but with time and painting that should go away.

Good job.

Not necessarily, having the first company be represented with white is an Ultramarine thing that many of their successors follow but not each and everyone. Ultimately the decision is yours if that's how you want to go with it.
