Time to pick winners for the October round, where the theme is our annual Halloween special. Spooks and monsters and everything that goes bump in the night. But it doesn’t have to be all ghouls, ghosts and goblins; anything that relates to Halloween in its many forms is fair game.

As always, feel free to vote for as many entries as you feel deserve recognition, and for any reason, be that the quality of the paintjob or modeling, the interpretation of the theme, the effort on show or anything else you think deserves a nod. You're also very welcome to leave some feedback for the entrants, and many of the images link through to the Dakka gallery, so throw them a vote there as well if you fancy. The poll will run for 5 days.

Great entries and fun models this time! I definitely have some new ones on my wish list. I thought everyone did a great job. Sigismund22's clown judicar is amazing for both theme and paint job.

Great work as usual everyone. My favourite is still DV8’s “treat or trick” and all I can say to Sigismund22 is “honk honk”!

Another month of stellar work. I really enjoy everyone's diverse styles and interpretations of the theme.

SergentSilver: A solid SM model. The chest eagle turned out particularly well, as did the skin on the face, although the model would probably benefit from painted eyes. The black armour could do with some highlighting as well.

Nevelon: I like your choice of blue for the ghosty parts-- green seems to be the default color for ethereals these days. The blue might benefit from brighter highlights, which would also give you a chance to try some lighting effects.

Ezki: I like your highlighting on the red armor-- I never take my reds that light because more often than not I end up with pinks.

lifeafter: The skin on your vampire is pale and dead-looking without being white or green, so a big plus for that. Did you use metallic paints on this model? The highlights are quite effective.

Yorkright: As I wrote on your P&M blog, the various layers of color-- green skin, yellow fat, and purple guts-- came together really, really well.

me: These models are proof that not every Citadel model from the 80's was a masterpiece. They were fun to paint, especially Judge Fire, but the models themselves just don't hold up that well today.

theCrowe: I particularly like the diamond pattern on the vampire snake.

Pariah Press: I have never seen this model before. I like your use of standard GS colors with the pink mouth parts for contrast.

MangoChutney: Your near-white highlights contrast quite nicely with the ethereal green. In the full-sized photo, I can see the reflected light where the ghosts are gripping the banner and horn, but it's a little to subtle to make out in the smaller forum-sized photo. I feel like the cast light could be brightened up a bit.

KidCthulhu: the purple zombie skin reminds me of the zombies from Romero's Dawn of the Dead.

Freya: The color transition from the fleshy wing membranes to the "fingers" is really well done. The glowy tattoos are a nice touch, as well.

the_balloon_dog: I love the super-high contrast on the multi-limbed monster. It looks like it's emerging from the shadows to eat some unsuspecting soul.

DV8: Baby Yoda looks swell, but the pumpkin really sells the model for me. I also admire the sheer variety of tufts on the base.

Graphite: What fun models! I'd like to see whatever monster those tentacles are attached to.

Pneumo: Lovely work. The pale bluish skin stands out nicely against the dark red armor.

SmallChanges: What a fun model! Keeping both the purple and the green dark prevents them from clashing.

Captain Brown: A great selection of models to slot into other units. Their bright and colorful outfits hearken back to the 90's.

Vejut: You have a remarkable extensive collection of humanoid animals. I think my favorite of these three is the bat necromancer. Your dungeon bases are sweet, as well.

Arakasi: I love how the bright clean colors of the armor, clothes and sword stand out against the earthy bones.

More comments tomorrow!

There's a lot of creative and fitting entries about, these are my favorites:

Ezki: Amazing work, especially because I didn't even realize it's a conversion. Great colors, lovely edge highlighting and wouldn't want to meet him in the dark.

Yorkright: You took real effort in getting all the color transitions exactly right and I especially love the detail work on the face. Those eyes

Freya: Just wow, the color transitions are great and that subtle OSL at her feet really makes that miniature.

sigismund22: That conversion is gold and I love to imagine the faces of Imperial citizens opening their doors and seeing this jokester asking for sweets

Vejut: One can always count on you for interesting miniatures and those animal Undead are no exception. Love the sculpts and the paintjob makes them look like they climbed out of a slightly gruesome children's book.

I appreciate the feedback!

I tried to paint flame eyes like are seen in some of the art for LotD (albeit from helmet eyes), but it didn't show up very well. You can just barely see it in the first image, which is mainly why I included it. I definitely need to get that down for other bare face models or switch to a hollow white or glowing red as seen in some other art where the face is showing, though the flame look should pop nicely on helmets.

On the other hand, the lack of highlighting was somewhat of a design choice as their lore states that their armor seems absorb all light, natural and artificial (except where it mentions the bone details catching the light of the warp flames). I may eventually go back and try some light source techniques to highlight as if it were reflecting the warp flames that flicker over their armor. Or I might just give in someday and do some simple edge highlighting with dark greys. I've been watching a lot of "How to" painting vids for BT lately due to their recent 9th release.

My own model aside, the entries for this month were all pretty great, and I'm honestly surprised I got votes with how great looking the competition was.

I was also amused to see I wasn't the only one who thought of the LotD for the spooky theme. I considered painting some of the old metals as well, but decided to practice on current generic plastic. Larger flat surfaces to try out freehand details with before working around all the raised details on the originals.

I have never been good at lighting effects like you describe. Keep trying so I can copy your technique.

Jamie Shred: Those are some icky models. I like the shiny guts.

Turaxa: Nice work on a very old model. I like your work on the bone. The model feels incomplete without the flames, though.

MobileSuitRandom: The checks and stripes on Esmelda are quite nice, and I like the red and purple ectoplasm-- I don't think I've seen that done before. I'll have to copy your idea.

Paradigm: That's pretty impressive work for a speed paint. The colors on the cape are very Blanchitsu.

Maharg: Using purple on everything really sells the etherealness of the models-- it's like everything, including the weapons, is ectoplasm.

Chris56: The rusty metal stands out nicely against the black-and-white. Also, the warm colors on the priest vs. the cool colors on the ghost really sell the living-vs-undead aspect of the scene.

Viterbi: Nice Doc Ock. I like that you kept the classic colors.

Midget Gems: Your rusty armor turned out great. It took me a while to notice that sneaky Gobbo!

Great work again this month. Let's all keep pushing ourselves!

Thanks for the shout out, Flinty. Nice see someone else shares an enthusiasm for my odd notions. Though they’re characters from a story I’m writing with my 10 year old son so I can’t really even claim to have come up with them myself.

A couple of stand-out entries I’d like to shout out too.

Chris56 - your priest vs undead combo looks great! I really love the black and white fade and the rusty metal bits look great. I can almost imagine them being the only bits left after the priest banishes the thing back to the underworld.

Ezki - your Archon is a thing of beauty. Really loved that dark red armour scheme. It’s a great looking character mini that deserves to be art the centre of his own personal army.

Pneumo - it’s great to see some smaller scale stuff on show. Love to see how scale affects what’s possible on a mini and you’ve managed a great amount of detail and shading for something so tiny. Top work!

Vejut - big shout out to my fellow anthro- animals fan. Great to see Burrows & Badgers representing in the mix. Great paint jobs, you’re doing those minis proud.

Ha! I'm still just starting with washes and free hand detail. It'll probably be a while before I can try light source effects. And I'll probably need to get the hang of paint thinning, wet blending, etc... or get an airbrush. I can get up to Battle Ready Standard without too much issue, but I'm still in the experimentation stage of advanced techniques. Honestly, I think this is only the second or third model I've used washes and maybe seventh for dry brushing? Not counting one junk terrain piece I did some rough painting on a few months ago to test a homemade black wash and reacquaint myself with dry brushing on something I can toss if I ruin it. I may be forgetting a few models I experimented on with dry brushing before I understood what dry brushing was.

@joshinjapan, thanks for the feedback! I did use metals on the gold and sword. It's proacryl brass and silver. So smooth. I wash the brass in a diluted Wyldwood. I used an oil wash on the blade.

Thank you for the feedback JoshInJapan, Viterbi and theCrowe!
I'm glad the conversion did not look too much like a conversion

Here's a few shout outs in no particular order:

Freya: Maybe my favorite entry from you so far. Really love the colors and the all around feel of the model!

Sigismund22: Very inventive conversion and a great example of out of the box thinking!

DV8: Just wow. So simple yet so elegant! And that pumpkin looks almost too good!

Midget Gems: Great work on the rust and the wings!

Captain Brown: I really like the bright colors and the classic look of the bunch!

Thanks for the comment. The bone came out well, but was actually really simple, just a GW bone colour (screaming skull I think) washed with seraphim sepia. I wanted to emphasise the "skeleton costume" aspect of the LotD's look with this miniature to go with October's Halloween theme, but I know what you mean about the flames being a key part of their aesthetic too. Though it might not be apparent, the colours on the base effect were actually a nod to the traditional flames. In hindsight, some freehand flames on the mini's blank pauldron might have looked good, but I didn't have the time.

I did notice the base, and I meant to comment on it-- I like the dots of white where the lines cross, they help sell the lighting effect-- but I didn't make the connection to the missing flames. That's a pretty nifty idea, but it might work better if the lines were wider so they stand out more. Kudos for trying something new, though.

Well it’s been 5 days (or so ) so time to call the winners.

In third, with an impressive Deamonhunter and 33 votes, is Freya:
Spoiler:

Second place is just a couple of votes more. From the statuesque to the tiny, we go from the demonhunter to DV8’s Baby Yoda. Who is cute enough to warrant tossing a full sized candy bar into that bucket!
Spoiler:

And taking the gold with 38 votes is sigismund22’s Halloween Special Judiciar. This model had been modified in the most heretically awesome way to bring it into the holiday spirit, and painted to match. Better give this guy treats if he comes knocking, the giant sword lets you know what kind of trick you would be in for!

Spoiler:

As always amazing work from everyone. Tons of great entries this month, and never enough votes to go around. Keep painting, and I’ll catch you in November’s challenge (If I can )

Unfortunately its been a very busy month for me had since I had to take on more work so really not had much time to get the league table updated. I only just started my entry for this months comp.

I will do a double update once Nov's winners have been announced.
