Lately, I have been toying with a gold-bricking Formation costing under 300 points.

Three Plasmancers and Two units of 2 Cryptothralls = 5 units = 7 figures

- End of your Movement Phase, 9 MW on 4+.within 24"
- Each Fight Phase, 3x MW on 4+ for each enemy unit within 6"
- 3d3 Plasmic Lance shots for 2 points each at 18"
- Impossible to target Plasmancers with Ranged Weapons until all 4 Cryptothralls are dead
- No spillover fire between units and cryptothralls are in 2 separate units to slow their removal
- for a few points more. Quantum Orb opponent's Characters / Objective

This complicated little bundle of gold bricks just sits behind the rest and sprinkles MW like candy.
MW distribution is mathematically equivalent to 2+ to hit, 2+ to wound, and only 5+ to save.

Have you tried anything like this? What was the result?

I don't think this is very special.

The Reason to play 3 Plasmamancers is buying 3 Indomitus boxes.

My issue with that is that 3 Plasmancers take up 1,5 HQ Slots, assuming you take either an Overlord or Lord in the same detachment. This locks you out from using a Skorpekh Lord which I currently really like for the dmg output in cc. Despite this I like your way of thinking, althrough 4 combat bins provide still less protection that just moving the Plasmancers along a unit of f.e. Warriors.
Also, is the offensive potential really worth it? 3d3 shots what is basically half overcharged Plasma as well as ~4.5 Mortals to the closest enemy unit. This seems okaish for 300pts, yet you have to keep in mind that this whole ‚unit‘ will be a prime target for your opponent for scoring some secondaries.
For casual games I still think this might be a fun approach

There are a lot of issues with this. You're taking up a lot of HQ slots for those Plasmancers, when Chronomancers are just better (and, I'd argue, Technomancers).

Killing 2x2 Cryptothralls is not difficult for most armies. A couple of decent plasma weapons remove them quite handily, for example. You're then giving up a bunch of Assassinate points since your opponent has likely taken that secondary in this scenario.

You're also going to need to get very close to get all those MWs to go off in the Fight phase, which means you get shot more effectively.

Ultimately there are better uses of your HQ slots and points than this little trick. It's fun, and might catch an unprepared opponent off guard, but ultimately it's not very good.
