I'm building and painting a Carcharadrons list and have a full list of custodes battle ready - but idk all the lore - books - youtube etc and the LOOK of Krieg REALLY makes me want to play them, but feth me if building an army of them isn't damn expensive. I also know Astra Militarum aren't the greatest army atm in 9th, but that doesn't stop me - the browns/blacks/golds of krieg and that just badass WW1 looking armor just REALLY appeals to me and i think their gonna be my next army after i got my Carco's built/painted/battle ready - BUT i got no idea where to start with them especially come january when the new "patch" drops and things get ....GW'd. So, help me out where do i start when making a Krieg list? I know next to nothing about them in the terms of units/HQ etc whats strong/whats weak - nothing. Any help is appreciated especially when building a FW exclusive army.

Well, for one thing they won't be Forge World exclusive for much longer. The plastic set from Kill Team: Octarius is slated to come out early next year on its own.

With all of that said, it's hard to really give advice on things like this in my opinion. It feels like there is some kind of big shift coming for Guard in their next book.

If you can nab a trio of the Kill Team Krieg sets with their upgrade frames you'd have a good solid start to a Combat Patrol though. Also don't forget that Leman Russes are a thing!

Yeah i didn't know if i could RUN leman Russ's as Krieg - I REALLY don't know the rules of Astra Mili all that much - and you got a link to that kill team so i can look at it? I cannot find it as my brain is the big dumb atm.

It's the same spues as came in the Kill Team 2.0 box.

as for taking Leman Russ? Sure, of course you can.
You're not even required to run Krieg models as Krieg if you don't like their rules.

In 8th Krieg had their own very weird army list that ported some stuff over from the Astra Militarum Index but kept its own variants on other units. This meant when the AM Codex came around with the improvements to Russ's and other things many Krieg units didn't get them for quite a while. Now IIRC most of the Krieg list has just been amalgamated into the normal AM units and given a Regimental Trait with only specialist units like Death Riders and the Death Korps Marshal getting unique profiles. With the DKoK getting a plastic kit they'll likely be included with their Reg Trait in the next AM Codex slated to come out at some point next year.

Yeah this isn't a build it now list this is more of a - in the future - type thing. It's my pet project cuz i just REALLY like Krieg's lore and models and with a new codex - patches and other gak coming within like ~4 months it wouldn't be TOO smart to build them just yet - but this begs the question - can i buy regular AM and use them as stand-ins for Krieg or would i have to buy the krieg upgrade kits? Cuz FW has options for its own units and upgrade kits?

Do you like Krieg's aesthetic?

Then wait for the Krieg models. They're just Guard Infantry. It seems very much like there's more than just the Infantry Squad coming as well...but that might be whenever the codex fully drops.

Yeah thats what i kinda figured. I'll have to wait and see in the future - who knows what GW will do to anything really its always a mystery fun box when they start patching or putting out new codexes. Hell we'll probably see 10th edition drop within a year or two right after they drop the "last" codex for 9th >_>

Important thing to note...Guard were an early codex for 8th.

They still haven't been updated, outside of things like the FAQ and "The Greater Good" book for Psychic Awakening.

Id say pick up a squad of the plastic kill team guys and hammer out a paintscheme. Youd be surprised where you can scrounge up cheaper ones in trades, just ask around. That or just get the killteam box, all the models and terrain in it are nice and the books can prop up a table or something.

Once you settle on a paintscheme, I would just focus on getting a leman russ and hammering out how you want to paint them as well. I wouldnt buy death riders or any FW stuff unless you particularly like certain models. Signs point to krieg getting a proper splash release. If anything, Id start saving money for the inevitable limited box release GW seems to like doing now. Maybe we'll see a beast snagga style box with say 20 infantry, a command squad, and something like death riders or heavy weapons.

Regardless, dont buy too much just yet. IG will get a new codex after tau, gsc, and custodes, and we'll probably have a major shakeup to rules and mechanics. Other than just getting together 500pts or so to get a feel for how you want to build from, I wouldnt buy too much just yet.

If you're genuinely looking at building a Krieg army with all krieg models, wait. I'm not sure if Forgeworld is still stocking DKoK models but regardless they're aiming to replace a lot of that stuff. Unless you feel like dropping a ton of money on the FW models just wait it out. Maybe pick up a couple of the kill team squads, get some tanks you plan on using (never hurts to get some russes, they're going to be in most lists).

depend on if you want the new plastic krieg or old FW resin type, or ok with both.

I just picked up my copy of KT Octarius on Amazon for $117, so a bargain deal there rn. FW krieg can be had relatively easily, though you should be a better modeller before buying resin models as the prep process prior to painting is more than prepping plastic.

EDIT: krieg use vehicles like LRBT, but they use a different(Mars) pattern, you'll need FW upgrades; for transport they use the LoW Gorgon, Centaur; other vehicles include Macharius variants, enclosed arty Basilisk etc.)

It does if the OP thinks they recently had a book.

You don't need to use the Ryza pattern kits, it's not a requirement. Same with literally everything else there, all optional. Chimeras, Wyverns, Tauroxes, everything is entirely available because Guard Regiments don't always get 100% the same equipment.

The two blend together fairly well.

The enclosed Basilisk is the Armageddon pattern.

Also worth mentioning that Krieg doesn't have any exclusively Krieg vehicles, even in FW.

Some Krieg regiments use chimeras, they just happen to be quite rare.

My Krieg Assault Korp will be Chimera based.

On moon miranda.

The DKoK mars pattern russ tanks were always really cool, but they weren't used exclusively. I wish I'd picked some up, but they were always so $$$

As noted, DKoK also do use Chimeras, particularly in Assault Brigades often autocannons, but nobody is going to care what you arm it with.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.
