I wanted to pick a present for my big bro who paints Harlequins. He mostly enjoys painting not so much playing. He likes the Eldar aesthetics, so I thought about taking a start collecting or a combat patrol so he has a bunch of them to chew on. He also really liked the Hellions kit (he planned to convert one into a green goblin ! )

What should I choose ? Which do do you recommend ? Do you have a particular Mini you find fun to paint and you would like to recommend ?

Craftworlds are likely getting a bunch of new models in 2022, so I'd go with Dark Eldar.

Agreed. Dark Eldar have a range with some new strengths, whilst Eldar don't have much new except a resculpt of Howling Banshees iirc

Eldar wraithnight would be a nice kit, plus he could paint it in Harlequin colours

The new Jain Zar is a lovely new sculpt that fits in with the Harlequin's face-mask and acrobatic theme.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

I always preferred the Craftworld Eldar range. While some of it is as ancient as the children of the stars themselves, a lot of the plastic kits are fantastic and won't be going anywhere after the new update. I would start with those kits. That would be the jetbikes, wraith constructs, and characters for the most part. Some vehicles like war walkers and fireprisms are generally always good and those kits look great. The start collecting boxes are a great way to go. Wave serpents are ancient but evergreen.

As far as a favorite kit... I've always meant to pick up Howling Banshees as they look super fun to paint, but they've never been good in game unfortunately. But the different schemes you can apply to all the aspect warriors helps keep the army fresh and exciting in a way that few others can rival.

I would skip the aspect warriors for now as they are due for plastic updates. I've been saying that for over a decade but it's gotta happen soon!

It depends if you like going "AH my hand, I got spiked by the model again!". I love my DE, I really do, but hot damn do they drain my will to hobby like no other project before.

Sounds familiar!

I love my DE models, but they're a pain in the bum to paint. They look like they should be quick and easy, but it seems to be taking me forever...

I've found it boils down to two things:
A - You've picked a classic scheme with a single block of colour and edge highlights for days, and as we all know the DE love their edge.
B - You've done something different and now have to paint small intricate detail all over the place.

Thanks for the advices everyone !

The Wraithknight does look like a nice present ! Other the that it's true that there are no individual Eldar models that jumps out to me. Except maybe Banshees ?
As for his ease with painting, he's way better then me. He went for the Spade pattern for his harlequins after all . So I don't think he would be put off by much.

I'd go with Start Collecting Craftworlds. These are new, nice models that won't be replaced quickly, SC offers excellent discount, and will be deleted soon. Also, it's the part of the Eldar range easiest to Harlequin-ify in color scheme. You can add Wraithknight to that later, as unlike SC it's not a model on quickly running out life support.

your mind

I am with Irbis… painting wraith dudes can be super fun, big open canvases, and classic. Plus can open up the new model range for a coherent collection next year.
