Instead of choosing one of the six classic dynastic codes necrons can choose two custom codes, one is called dynastic tradition (DT) and the other circumstances of awakening (COA). You can have two detachments with the same dynastic tradition, but different circumstances of awakening, or the other way around.

Most necron characters can only affect units which are from the same dynasty. But which one is the one you replace <DYNASTY> with ? Is it the one from dynastic traditions, or the one from circumstances of awakening, or both ? This is kinda important, can a character from a detachment with DT A and COA B affect a unit from another detachment which has DT A, but COA C ? The DT is identical, but the COA is not.

ANCIENT DYNASTIES
If your chosen dynasty does not have an associated Dynastic Code, you must instead create their Dynastic Code by selecting one code from the Dynastic Traditions list, below. Unless you selected the Vassal Kingdom Dynastic Code, you can then also select one additional code from the Circumstances of Awakening list.

THE <DYNASTY> KEYWORD
Most Necrons units are drawn from a dynasty. When you include such a unit in your army, you must nominate which dynasty it is from and then replace the <DYNASTY> keyword in every instance on its datasheet with the name of your chosen dynasty. This could be one of the dynasties detailed a Warhammer 40,000 publication, or one of your own design.

Let's say you make a custom dynasty (e.g., the Dakkanaut dynasty) and you give it the 'Eternal Conquerors' dynastic tradition and the 'Warrior Nobles' circumstance of awakening. When building your army, you would replace the <DYNASTY> keyword with the name of your dynasty (i.e., DAKKANAUT in this case). Neither the dynastic tradition nor the circumstance of awakening replace the <DYNASTY> keyword.
