I've just started painting my very first LOTR miniatures after doing either old Citadel or new Sigmar stuff and I have to say I'm struggling to see the details. I don't mean that my eyes are bad I just mean that on the minis I'm painting - Moria Goblins it just seems really difficult to work out what exactly I'm looking at - where the cloth ends and the skin begins, the difference between skin and armour. It doesn't help that I bought these things second hand and they were already primed and not in a very good way. I'm also guessing that these aren't the very best miniatures in the range. But has anybody else experienced the same? It's frustrating isn't it? On the other hand they're so small that getting a few things wrong doesn't show up so much and I'm quite enjoying the change of style.

They were early plastic kits (2001?), and made as a single body piece, so yes, some details kind of fade in together.

You get that a lot with single-piece kits, especially on the sides of the model where detail is limited by the mould. Basically, the mould is old-style rigid steel, so you could only have detail sticking out in 2 directions perpendicular to the mould join. If you had detail sticking out parallel to the mould, the sprue got stuck!

The Moria Goblins are also really tiny models.

Just not a great example compared to GW stuff today. They're ok - detail is sharp in most areas..

Waah the primer off with isopropyl alcohol, or drybrush with white to pick up details.

Glad to hear it's not just me. I'm seeing it as a challenge to do the best I can with them.

Yeah my suggestion would be to basecoat black, then drybrush a white or light layer. This will pick out details and borders, and have a secondary effect of giving you a bit of a pre highlight
