Welcome to the Wildest Waaagh in all of the Waaaghverse.

This is the culmination of over a decades collecting and kitbashing. It as you can see I have a problem with actually finishing a model. I just never enjoyed painting as much as kitbashing. But now I'm on a war path to finish off my collection.

VW Battlewagon
The original idea here was gona be some 'Beach Boyz'. If I remember correctly the artwork on the box for the VW van had like a little beach scene setup of a family. So I wanted to do an Ork version. Orks in beach hats, with volleyballs and shorts.

Turret is magnetised. Really need to finish this one up, think all it really needs is some panels over the windows (as I think I've now lost the actual clear windows it came with).

The plague grot tanks is an interesting idea. I think something strange and nurgly may have tainted the ork's cesspits...

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Yeah I have a whole bunch of Nurgle-orks, and I really wanted some grot tanks. They are supposed to also count as plaguecrawlers if I ever wanted to run a DG list.

Here's what's first on my hitlist of models to complete. I am already feeling a little bored of painting, although it has been a good experience to get me back into painting. I have also worked out I need some kind of better way to take photos, as these didn't come out great, they look a little off compared to how they look in person.

Had fun painting the pink, not too sure on the gold, I want to do more with it, but not sure what to highlight it with really.

Just need to put a bit of grass on the bases and then finish the skin tones and do a few other details like the bone.

Meganobz unit complete!
They also double up as a unit for my Grustodes (Grot Custodes/Knight list), for when I want a <10 model army and not a >100 model army.

This is the second unit ive painted in a long time (I did a FG unit about 6 months ago), really pleased in the final finish. They took longer than I had hoped, but I made quite a few mistakes and ended up having to go over colours again in places, or just totally re-prime. The final method was as follows;

  • Prime Grey
  • Paint armour pink
  • Paint golden armour (shoulders, belt, weapons, neck bit) in boltgun
  • Go over boltgun with gold (as I only had an airbrush gold - rest had dried out from years in the garage)
  • Red on cloaks
  • Crimson wash all over
  • layer pink
  • layer red on cloaks
  • silver dry brush on gold
  • few more washes on cloak
  • apply decals
  • apply golden rust with the blue/green pigments
  • varnish
  • re-layer pigments (as varnish bonds with the pigments and reduces them
  • final varnish

  • I was really surprised how well the decals worked.

I used micro set/sol to help blend the edges, but I think after the varnish the edge lines just completely vanished which is great. Bit of a faff to get them on in some places, but otherwise quite fun. I've never really bothered with decals before, but I liked the idea of getting them on some of the armour/cloak parts. The slight brown tint came from some pigment powders I was doing on the base that I then just rubbed onto the decal to try and make it look less flat white - as the decals went on after the washes, so that kinda made it obvious.

I then glued them to their 3D printed unique custom bases. Each base was custom designed for each model - as each set of legs got chop-shopped to make them stumpy, they ended up with weird feet angles. So I just used the bases to account and hide that fact a bit better (flat bases looked weird basically). Each base took about 30 minutes to design using some digital kitbashing (will add more info on that later).

The bases printed out were a little rough, I could have gone with 2-3x more layers, but these were ones I printed to test out the positioning and angles and in the end I just didn't want to waste the plastic (printed rougher for reduced print time, so I could fix problems if needed). Overall their grammage was quite low; probably like 10g of PLA per base; so like 15p per base - pretty happy with that. FDM printers are really good at printing bases imo; resin printers generally have some issues with warping due to the way support structures and angled prints. Whereas the only supports on these were underneath to allow them to have that classic hollowed centre (see a lot of solid bases with resin - which I hate. Hollow it FFS! flat stuff sits awfully on tabletops).

(Insert link to bases - I intend to give these away free shortly, so stay tuned if you'd like to grab these base STLs).

Overall super pleased with how the rust effect came out, IRL it looks awesome and some of the zoom on these photos is a bit much. I have just primed the Armiger counts as which will be following the same scheme and I cant wait to do this on a larger model.

    Lots to like here!
I had the same problem of building and kitbashing but never actually painting anything, but managed to get through after coming back to the hobbie.
I would suggest to start with small things to get on the rythm, and trying new technics or pushing myself with the next project is always something that keeps me going.
    Hope to see more soon

    Thanks Killa!

Thats exactly what ive been doing; focusing on enjoying the painting and keeping it to smaller units to start. And on that note! time to unveil the new boyz on the block.

    Da Plague-mandos!
Lore wise; under the blessing of Mork and Gork, Snikrot made a pact with Papa nurgle to aide some blighties in stealing something valuable, something chaosy, shiney, valuable. Aaaaaand in true blood axe ork fashion.... once the job was done... Snikrot and da boyz broke the pact and made off with all da loot!

Laughin' their arses off da boyz thought they had pulled off a great heist, but what they didn't realise was Papa nurgle had the last laugh, in breakin' da pact Snikrot and da boyz got infected with a space STD. Everytime a boy under Snikrot's command dies a plague-mando spore is released, this single spore will birth one of these ghoulish horrors; half ork, half plague-demon. They stalk Snikrot and his crew across the stars (like the film it follows).

You know their presence is near when the local fauna begins to wilt and wither, they stalk the shadows, their bodies mutating into trees and other organic matter, the last thing you see is the glint of their eyes in the darkness; blood red and thirsting, the last thing you hear is their scraping rusty blades as its plunged into your torso.

This is about half the unit. I have a Snikrot model done, and a couple non-based models. I now just need to print some parts to make the special carrying boyz and a few more so I can have 2 units or 1 large one.

As a fell oil w long term collector/kutbasher who is trying to finally finish their complete waaagh!, too, I really appreciate this thread. Your boys have a good, solid paint scheme and I love that you've opted for purple. There's not enough violet representation in orkdom.

    Thanks Boss!
At first I wasn't sure on the purple, but after I put it down I fell in love. I think I'm gona have to do a whole bunch more purple in my army. Usually I go badmoonz as I love the yellow, but I think here that the purple with the rusty oranges works really well. I was pleasantly surprised.

Plus it kinda reminds me of an overwatch league skin!

    Wazbom WIP

I got a wazbom kit for Xmas (one of the few kits I haven't actually got and that isn't broken down into my bitz boxes.) So I decided not to do too much of a conversion on this one, kept the majority of the kits build. I've been working with LEDs and 3D printing for awhile and this was one of the cool ideas I've been meaning to try out.

Effectively it's flicker/fade LEDs inside 3D printed parts. You can print the parts in either clear, white or another light colour and as long as you don't make the skins too thick of the print the LED will cause the entire print to glow. Personally I think white works best, as clear can be 'too transparent' and can give you high and low spots of light. White tends to cause the light to bounce/reflect around the inside of the print giving it a better overall glow.

For these models I printed them on an FDM, but a resin printer does also work. But an FDM was better for the speed I wanted and ease of clean-up.

The photos tend to show the LEDs brighter than they are in reality; just what happens when you take photos of direct light sources I tend to find. But super pleased with how they are looking.

Flicker blues in the weapons cell
Slow fade RGB (so it cycles through all colours) in the main cabin cell
Flickering reds in the wing engines
Flickering yellow and orange on the main jet

Been awhile since I've had chance to make any progress on my Orks. But this weekend I had chance to start getting my Boyz based on the new 32mm size bases and get their paintjobs improved a little. These 5 Boyz are on custom 3D printed bases I whipped up in about 30mins.

Most of the base colours are down, just need to do a bit of rusting, a couple final highlights on the leathers/browns, eyes and a little bit more skin work. Then a bit of pigment dusting to tie the base into the Boyz a little more and give them Elsa of the clean cut look.
