That's the power of a multinational multimillion cinema marketing machine running for 3 years on your wargame.

It's also a huge crash on your sales rate when that marketing machine stops working and moves onto the next film franchise. Which is in part why GW enjoyed such fantastic sales (and I think a big reason Old World got neglected during that time as Middle Earth was THE fantasy game); and then suddenly saw that market and sales crash from what they were.

Toy firms that have been working with films for years are used to this; they shift with the films and know that old stuff will suddenly stop selling en-mass and such. They are ready to adapt and know the cutoff points. GW wasn't prepared and their whole company approach to their product is different. They are geared for long term more so than many other firms today (space marines have been selling for 30 years).

Pretty much what Dudeface said. It’s also why GW haven’t much dabbled in IP games since.

Lotr is their best set of rules if you ask me.

I've read enough interviews around the lotr license - it's success surprised gw and shocked the film producers that a ttg was the license that kept returning the highest royalties.

What counts as the Tactical Squad though? Which variant of the kit is GW referencing, the first or the most recent? I would bet that it's all Tactical Squad kits ever in which case nothing else ever stood a chance.

I would think it's THE Tactical squad. The UM on the cover, un-details-cluttered, Missile Launcher on-the-shoulder Tactical Squad. The truest of True-Marines. . . . "And so shall it be for a thousand times a thousand years, unto the end of eternity and the extinction of mortal flesh."

Surely they're talking about the sales for one specific year - so whatever tactical squad was on sale that year.

Yep that's likely it, however its still a powerful boast considering that no other kit has ever managed it before or since (that we know of).

Wasn't the AT Warlord Titan GW's most sold miniature in 2018? Or what timeframes are we looking at here, if not annuals?

I know, I was just musing about Overread's notion that it wouldn't perhaps have been overtaken since then.

I guess people didn't read the part where it says "during the year of it's release", which is a really long time ago and only got compared to marines of that same year.

It would be interesting to see if the tac marine kit is still #1, or if something like the intercessor box has overtaken it.

I expect the Tacticals have dropped off for sure. The Primaris line doesn't encourage mixing and matching as much as the former line though, and the mixing and matching is probably a big part of the Tacticals success too. I've used them to make Sternguard, Devastators, Command and Assault Squads without Jump Packs too.

Fully agree. For a lot of projects, just more power armored bodies were needed. So the tac squad could be used to stretch out other kits. Dev squads were probably the biggest poacher of tac bodies for this. Worked in reverse as well. Many of my tactical sergeants were enhanced with sternguard bits, and everything that’s not a ML started someplace else.

With the bump to 2W I think Tacs may have a new lease on life, but how long? I really enjoy the intercessor kit (and the assault one as well) but as a modeler, the new primaris range is a shadow of the firstborn.

I'm just gonna buy whatever 30k plastics they release, I already have 40 MKIV & 20 MKIII. I own exactly 1 box of the 40k tacticals(if you don't include RTB-01's) so honestly I don't care about it. Even in RT I pined for MKIII plastics but settled for a couple metal single pose Sgt sculpts.

Bring on the MKII and Beakies!!!!! More PA marks for the PA mark god!!!!!!
