I enjoyed the chat about terrain. I try to play on a terrain rich board but iv found that im something of a oddity in that regard

Do you have any "worked examples" of good or interesting scenery placements that you could share on your website? I dont have/use wartable.

Also 3d vs 2d would be good to hear more of your thoughts.

Excited to listen to this one today. I also prefer terrain rich boards.

@Sunno

The best compromise I have found for 2d vs 3d terrain... is to cut out neoprene templates for your 3d terrain, and place the 3d terrain on top of that. Allows you to pull terrain as needed if a model can't fit or for measuring purposes.

I've actually written a couple of different articles about how to read terrain, but none in particular about making good terrain tables.

This battle report has a table that I think provides some good decisions to make and forces players to think about their model placement, though it isn't the most scenic.

On Episode 204 of Line of Sight, all three of the hosts are here to give some thoughts on the different point levels of Warmachine, what we like about them, what their problems are, and where they can be played to greatest enjoyment or benefit. Everything from zero points to one hundred and fifty points gets a look, and even a couple of historically interesting point formats pop up for a visit as we break it all down for you on Episode 204 of Line of Sight!

In this article we go over the most recent update for Clashmachine, a 50 point format for Warmachine and Hordes with an emphasis on cinematic terrain and whole-table gameplay.

On Episode 206 of Line of Sight, Bret and Jaden are here to chat about 3D terrain, what’s great about it, why Warmachine players tend to not use it, and then dive deep into some possible workarounds for making it better for play within the current ruleset.

Next, they go completely off the rails and suggest a number of core rule and terrain rule changes and additions that they think would make 3 Dimensional Terrain more viable for competitive Warmachine play without sacrificing the core strengths of the game. We don’t often do rules redesigns/homebrews on this podcast, so you won’t want to miss this episode!

Really enjoyed this cast. Boring tables is definitely one of the areas where I saw the game quickly lose traction. You'd wander around conventions and the WMH areas had almost zero draw compared to almost every other system out there. I think its probably the big thing that needs to be fixed for the game and honestly, as economical as felt terrain is, I've broken one Malifaux table into a half dozen or more Warmachine tables, so its not like its THAT bad, particularly with the right support.

I think the biggest issue with the game is just how severely models interact with terrain. The rough terrain penalty is completely archaic at this point. A 0" spec of rough terrain will take 2" off the movement of a large base trying to pass through and it only gets worse from there. In a game where even a single inch of threat advantage can determine a matchup, it really does not need to be what it is to have an impact. A flat -2" would be plenty.

As a side effect of this, the game really needs to figure out a way to live without the giant bandaid of pathfinder. Since I started playing at the launch of Mk2 the game has effectively been held hostage with this idea that either everything has a way to have pathfinder, or there's just no terrain on the table. At the very least, it needs to be broken up a bit so that it doesn't ignore EVERYTHING like say, water (which is a great example historically of the impact of overly punitive game mechanics, fwiw).

I also agree the charge mechanic needs some flexibility. When models routinely need a quarty of the length of the table unobstructed, it just doesn't work with terrain. My personal solution would be to change the existing movement bonus for a charge with a 3" reposition in a straight line towards the target (who you still need to have LoS to target beforehand). This would give you a little wiggle room to deal with B2B issues, hop over linear obstacles, and move around bits of terrain pretty well without too much nonsense. Probably needs to be tested with.... lets say Kayazy Eliminators to find cases that need to be ruled out like not being able to charge something you're engaged with.

Yeah, dealing with fractions of movement and then dividing them into even smaller fractions in rough terrain is a chore straight from some outdated 70's wargames. Models with no pathfinder being completely bogged down even in small pieces of terrain is also an issue.

Good discussion guys Posting the new cast episode here this week since I think it's more relevant than the wmh one.

On Episode 5 of the Line of Sight Gaming Podcast, Bret and Jaden tackle a particularly difficult concept - what makes a game Casual? What makes it Competitive? Are the two mutually exclusive? There are a lot of stereotypes and hyperbolized ideas about these two sides of the gaming coin, and we attempt to present a much more nuanced look at them on this episode of the Line of Sight Gaming Podcast!

Me too, keeps the table looking good and functional.

I can see that, this way in games, I just us a spray template for measuring movement. Whole numbers or close to 1/2, I don't really focus on exact lengths. Maybe for movement just something like round up to the next half or whole number like we do it locally would help. I do like the different type of terrain in WMH and other inspired d6 system when compared to other systems across the pound. But rather than all terrain be punishing or limiting, would be cool to have more terrain that gives positive effects outside of cover and conceal.

On Episode 208 of Line of SIght, Jaden takes the reins to walk through the newest format from the gang - Kidmachine! Kidmachine is a set of guidelines to help walk you, the adult, through the process of simplifying the rules of our favorite wargame down for both very young (3 to 7) and semi young (8 to 12) children who have an interest in tabletop gaming. The mental benefits for such a process cannot be overstated, as Wargaming in general develops mathematical, artistic, and spatial awareness that are difficult to instill through traditional methods very quickly. If you've got kids in the home or maybe ones that you interact with on a regular basis, you aren't going to want to miss this episode of Line of Sight!

On Episode 217 of Line of Sight, the gang is all here to tackle one of our two Donor Episode Topics for the month! On this episode, we talk about how the Void Archon was a lynchpin piece that single handedly held down entire strategies based around healing, tough, and stopping models from dying with other effects. With its recent nerf and less ubiquitous nature, does the rest of the game have enough tools to handle extremely strong skews that rely on these mechanics such as the Makeda 2 list that won Adepticon? The cast dives into each faction to talk about the tools they have available and whether they think it's enough on this unique look at the meta here on Line of Sight!
