Curious as to what other people think, what are some of the best loadouts for a Deathwatch Proteus Kill Team? Got my first one yesterday and am planning to make it a mixed ranged/melee team: Two with DWBGs and Power Swords, one with SS and DWBG, one with Fragstorm Cannon, and the Sergeant with a Heavy Thunder Hammer. This sound like a solid plan or nah?

My thinking is generally that the guys with storm shields should have ranged weapons because they'll probably be tanking most shots and thus die before they hit melee. I'd take two guys with Bolter and SS.

Not sure I'd take a Sgt with heavy thunderhammer in such a small unit for the same reason; though if they're teleporting or in a transport that might change the math on that. Personally I like heavy thunderhammers on jump pack units.

It might be worth keeping the Sgt to standard load (power sword/bolter) and giving a Black Shield the versatile combo (Thunderhammer and Lightning Claws).

But check out Swisshammer for your Deathwatch needs.

Fair enough. My guys will be footslogging for the moment until I build them up some more, so I'll definitely take that into consideration. Few questions though that I didn't see addressed in the video.
1.) In regards to the Sergeant, would it be better to take a Xenophase Blade over a Power Sword for the extra -1 AP and ignoring of Invul saves, for +7pts more?
2.) Is it worth taking a Blackshield in the team instead of another Veteran?

Blackshields are terrifying if they make it into combat. They're pretty much auto takes unless you have a very specific role for the squad in mind that precludes them.

I'm not a huge fan of Xenophase Blades in general because Kill Teams are already expensive as hell.

That said, the Eldar and Tau leaks look to change that thinking, as Invulnerable saves might become a lot more common in general. You've only got 2 platforms for the Xenophase Blade - Proteus Sgts and FIrstborn Captains, so it might be worth it.

Blackshields are definitely worth it. Basically your 6th man in the squad should be a Blackshield. And then you'll start wondering it you shouldn't just bump the squad to 10 to have more bodies to protect the melee gods in the unit (Sgt + Blackshield). It's super easy to over analyze Proteus teams.

While I haven't gotten around to painting my Proteus Kill Teams yet (burned out on the first 1000pts, see here https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/798012.page), here was the loadout I went with:

1 Sgt with Bolter and Powersword
4x DW Veterans with Bolter and Chainsword (this was tough, as I had to scrounge a lot of old kits for chainswords, but it made for cheaper DW veterans)
4x DW Veterans with Bolter and Storm Shield (meat shields)
1x Black Shield with Thunderhammer and Lightning Claw (versatile melee god)

I tried to keep the squad cost down and number of bolter and melee attacks up, as I figured Proteus teams would be there for dealing with lower end enemy troops in bulk. If there's a hard target to melee, the Thunderhammer can do the heavy lifting.

Though I almost went with 4x Shotguns, and could definitely see a 4x Shotgun 4x Fragcannon unit in the future, just for rule of cool.

I personally like to keep my proteus squads focused. I am either going to be shooting with them or assaulting. Since I think primaris do shooting better I make them all CC. AP-1 is the most important AP and it adds up across 4 attacks(especially when put in assault doctrine) if I am not advancing then a few pot shots isn’t going to matter compared to making 12 attacking in 16 AP -1 attacks.

My kill team is

SGT HTH
Black Shield Thunder hammer/CCW
2x Thunderhammer/Storm terminators
Bike
Vanguard with 2x CCW
4x CCW and Storm Shield.

If I have points I will work in 1-2 lightning claws as well as a storm shield on the vanguard vet

Vanguard unlocks melta bomb as well as being a faster model that can cut off a few inches on the charge. Bike unlocks fallback and charge, rest is pretty explanatory.

I haven’t been able to find a ranger build that I like. If we get a few points drops in CA there might be some play but it’s hard to call at this point.

Yeah there's lots of neat things you can do with a Proteus Kill Team by adding other units, though you lose the ability to use some transports (Rhino/Razorback) but not others (Corvus Blackstar).

Proteus Kill Teams are great - they're the most versatile we have and you can do a lot of different things with them. Generally speaking you want to specialise where possible. Mixing CC and shooting only really works if you can combat squad each element. In a pure close combat unit you probably do still want a few relatively cheap boltgun/SS guys to soak up wounds though.

I like the 4 Bikers, 1VV combat squad for versatility and speed, especially if you make them White Scars with either the AoR or the strat, to allow advance and charge. For pure close combat you definitely want a Blackshield and a lot of TH - heavy or regular.
