I’ve honestly never played anything like this army and have only ever worked with horde armies like AM and R&H. So any advice for a newbie?

With the meta about to shift in the wake of the upcoming Chapter Approved 2022, I'd stick to the basics for now. Grab yourself 2-3 boxes of Battle Sisters, a Canoness, and maybe a Palatine. Probably get yourself a Rhino or two as well. Oh, and Morvenn Vahl; you'll definitely want her even though she's going up a bit in points. You could get the Combat Patrol, but honestly the units included are monopose and not very optimized at all (the models are pretty nice though).

As for what else to get, it's probably a good idea to wait a couple of weeks and see how the points changes affect the meta. Unless you're sticking mainly to casual games, in which case get the models you think look cool or would be fun to play with in games; that probably won't change with the competitive meta, after all.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Sisters are very infantry heavy, and they build everything from the same box.

The only thing you don't have in there are multi meltas, but you can easily convert those.

Combat patrol box can be used though IMO that's one you want to settle on picking 2 if you pick 1(gives usable sizes for flagelants and repentia, walkers you get 2 then so solo box gives you full 4 squad).

Apart/instead just basic sister boxes several time, 2 retributors(or figure way to convert multi meltas), varn. Repentia is common though with all the -1 damage rules around I'm starting to warm up on arco flagelants.

But really you are going to be needing BSS boxes. A lot. With 3 squads from those and possibly padding for retributors if you want spare bodies several needed.

Also the celestant melee version are good.

1-2 Combat Patrols, as many Battle sister boxes. This would be a solid start imho.
The monopose sisters from the CP can be mixed and matched with the bits from the multipart kit box.

The Combat Patrol isn't bad. You'll be supplementing those models with those from the full kits, but it gives you a good starting point.

If you can locate the Adepta Sororitas: Purgatos Mission Battleforce, that is a decent deal also. The tanks (Exorcist and Immolator) may not be competitive, but are beautiful models for your collection and may someday become decent to field. The rest of the box is gold.

After those, I'd definitely get some Battle Sisters and Retributor boxes to fill out your line infantry. A Box of the Seraphim will allow you to get that squad from the Combat Patrol up to strength or even field two squads.

Are you intending on casual play or tournament play?

Casual, but still somewhat capable

As others have said, we're on the eve of a new set of points adjustments so things are in flux, but the Battle Sisters Squad is a flexible kit, builds up to 10 sisters with boltguns, allows you to swap in special or heavy weapons on some of them, equip one as a superior, and equip another with an icon - with kitbashing you can stretch this out a bit for additional icon bearers, special weapons, etc. and that's how you're going to build Battle Sister Squads, Celestians, Dominions, or reinforcing any of them with additional bodies if you're looking to bolster their squad size. I also like Retributors a bunch, though I'm not sure if the scene is still as crazy about them as I am?

Beyond that, the Combat Patrol box has a lot of unique models that you aren't going to get any other way and can provide some variety to your boltnuns, the canoness with the rod of office is a decent building-block for a lot of buff-blob builds, I'm not super keen on repentia or flagellants but the seraphim, penitent engine and rhino are resonably useful, and the repentia superior made a great canoness. Depending on what kind of army you're building, I might even recommend two of these to mix in those different bolter poses in with the rest of your army.

Beyond that, Celestine and Vahl are popular HQ choices, the latter's going up in points though, so you might want to read up on them and see if they meet your needs. The Canoness kit is great with a lot of options, but if you're getting the Combat Patrol and intend to run her with the Rod of Office there's no real need for another one.

Sisters kit is one of my favourites to build, cut and modify, magnetise, customise, … I also like the exorcist and immolator. So I would suggest 3 battle sisters boxes, 1 retributor box, 1 rhino, 1 exorcist, 1 immolator. I don’t like the walkers at all, and I would build my hq from the battle sisters boxes with bits from the others, some putty or green stuff and lots of little magnets.

To add to this, the retributor's arms, guns, and backpacks can fit on pretty much any battle sister body with only the barest additional effort, so I've been using them to vary up my poses too.

Consider 1-2 combat patrols (or 2-3 boxes of Battle Sisters), at least 1 Battle Sisters box and a box of Retributors for now. May want to convert the special weapons on the monopose Battle Sisters if you get the combat patrol box and the 2nd Canoness should be converted into a Palatine or Dogmata IMHO.
