I enjoy making conversions. Sometimes it is all I want to do with my hobby time .

I have recently been deeply enjoying the Tzaangor kit because of all the useful bits it leaves after you build the Tzaangor. I've used the arms on orc ghoul hybrids, the heads and horns to make weird quadruped horse creatures, the heads to make scaly bird people, etc.

Many modern GW kits seem to leave you with nothing these days but five or ten monopose minis.

What are some other (still in production) GW kits that leave you with useful bits that you guys have been enjoying? Help me find another fun box to buy!@

A good rule of thumb is if the kit has multiple weapon options and extra heads.

The varangard chaos kit is pricey, and monopose, but boy howdy does it come with lots of extra bits. They're littered across my Chaos Space Marines army.

Interesting! I've never considered that kit.

The DoK's Witch, Khinerai, and Melusai kits all leave behind bits due to their alternate builds, if you're in the market for feminine arms wielding spears, swords, whips, shields, glaives, bows, or scicles. As well as lots of alternate heads and some belt kit like hearts-on-a-rope and a surprisingly robust snake-lady loincloth and breastplate.

Huh. Maybe I could combine them with Shieldwolf Shieldmaiden bodies.. Or Frostgrave snakemen bodies.I don't have many female bits.

Blightkings boxed set is amazing for left over bits, though its of a Nurgle flavor.

Most of the original non-character Stormcast stuff(Anything pre-Dominion release, really) gives you a crazy surplus of bits. Those kits were very much like the OG Space Marine Tactical/Assault/Devastator Squads in terms of customizability.

The savage orcs kit leaves you with so many weapons. Not really any arms, but just so many weapons, it’s great for doing some things like having one of your catachan chimeras bristling with arrows/spears after a feral ork encounter.

Thank you for the recommendations. I've heard others sing the praises of the Blighting kit before.

Maybe I could use the Savage Orc weapons to convert some of my old plastic Wolfen...

Various Marine sets such as the Sternguard, Death Company and Sang Guard kits have plenty of bits leftover. I got one of each (2 of DC) for my old Blood Angels and have enough leftover to kit out the rest of the army.

If you get a Heavy Weapon Squad you can split the parts around with Infantry Squads. Having each HWT have a crouching and standing guy gives you an extra crouching guy to vary the Infantry Squads up a bit.

I was just going to post a similar thread related to 3D printing. Some of the kits out there have enough spare parts in them that if you wanted to all you'd need is a couple ebay/ 3d printed parts and you've got another model. Some of the dreadnought kits will give you two spare arms and the front of the hull. Print off the rear, some legs, and some feet and you have yourself another dreadnought.

The Tau tanks give you a standing Tau that you can kitbash into another infantryman, as does the Baneblade kit.

I can't remember the name of the unit, but the Necrons have a kit that had so many extra arms and heads that all you need are legs and torsos for another whole unit, something that Wargames Exclusive is catering to and provides for just that reason.

Many of the Imperial Guard tanks have TONS of extra weapons that make great conversions.

Talos/cronos kit.

It comes with a lot of masks, arms, and extra details. I remember getting two of those to assemble an official cronos and an official talos and then with the spared bitz I scratch built five additional talos e a few grotesques using stormfiends and ogres bodies respectively.

Carnifex. WIth all the different head, tail, and carapace options there is a lot to work with. I got one when it first came out, and using two spare carapaces, 4 spare monstrous scything talons left over from other nids, a spare carnifex head, spare tail doodad, and the crab-claws from the carnifex I made a new nid creature that looked like a nid fiddler crab. Years later rules for the Tervigon came out and it fit my creation.

I did something similar, but using a spare set of Balrog wings left over from when I made a Scarbrand conversion for my daemons.

A bit of caution about the Blight Kings, you're left with a lot of bits, but of questionable utility. The Kings are their own unique scale, bigger than humans and marines, smaller than ogres, each model has 2 breast plates but they each attach differently. Similarly the heads work differently from any other set I have.

So yes, you get a lot, but it's hard to use them for anything but Blight Kings.

Thank you for the heads up.

Sounds like there are a couple fantasy kits, but the lack of responses here reinforces my ongoing shift away from GW kits. Pickings are pretty slim if you like converting.

Thankfully Oathmark and Frostgrave kits exist. Those are rich rich kits when it comes to bits.

Reaper Bones minis go together with Blightking bits like a dream. Managed to get ten out of a single box just combining them with various Reaper Orc and similar sized minis.

Black Templars (both boxes) are nice for both SF and fantasy bits. You have tons leftover, especially fancy melee weapons in the SB box.

Not a new kit, but the Empire Greatsword box comes with a ton of bits. You get 10 Zhihanders and 10 flamberge greatswords so have the 10 left you dont use. It comes with a left hand axe, a left hand one handed sword, loose great swords, loose daggers, banners, extra heads, extra torsos. Horns... I mean it should since it was $50 for 10 guys... but the kit really is nice...

Edit: Re-read the "modern" part of the title... but the set is still available, so technically... Well... modern-ish?

I still get a lot of use out of the the 20 year old Chaos Marauders kit. You get a choice of hand weapons + shields or flails, plus skull banners, capes and other bits.

Not a great kit, you're basically building a Whole Army of Conans but a useful and basic one.

I think the mounted marauders are also in production.

EDIT

$50 for 10 riders? $40 for 20 marauders?!

I think I just talked myself into spending $90 on Chaos marauders. I'm sure I'll find a use for them...

Chaos Spawn is still on sale so let's call it modern. After you have 2 spawns built you are left with tons of additional bits, mostly chaotic/demonic but all could be useful in various projects.

Great suggestions all, thank you.

I just picked up a box of mounted mauraders.

I agree the great swords are a great kit.

I'll have to look into the chaos spawn kit. Hadn't considered that.

Post pics of the riders. I made my saving throw this week but they're still buzzing in the back of my mind.

How big are they? Could they pass as say GSC Jackal bikers?

That's what I was thinking of for them, since I already made mounted cops for my Arbites
