Alright so to start this post I want to say why I feel the need to do this. First off I have been playing warhammer for about 20 years now. And over the years one of the most disappointing things is when rules change and make it hard or not fun to play with the models I bought and painted. Most of the time these rules change is simply because GW is a company and needs to make money. Which is fine. But when my fun is hampered by someone basically telling me I can’t use models I want to the way I want to it’s endlessly frustrating. So, I’ve given up taking GWs word as law. I use their rules, and if I don’t like how a rule is I simply don’t use it. I of course discuss this with my friends before doing such. And make sure they are cool with my changes.

Grey knights are far and above my favorite faction. And when you think of grey knights the first thing you think of is terminators. But as the general population knows terminators in all flavors were nerfed pretty hard with their new boring rule book. So out of our entire 3 box model range they said let’s make 1/3 suck. Why you might ask? Because they were great last edition. So they sold a lot. Now peoples shelves are full of terminators. So how does GW sell more grey knights? Make units that were overlooked great, and great units suck. As soon as dreadknights and interceptors were meta, all I would read players say is “I just read the rule book, I’m off to buy 3 more boxes of strikes and dreadknights right now!” Boom. Marketing worked. But that leaves grey knights being pretty boring to play. So what to do? Make my own rules!!

So On to the changes.

Most of what grey knights lack in their sub par units is durability. Psychic awakening have them loads of options and that temporarily boosted terminator armor units to great utility. So that will be a general theme.

[Paladins -1 damage built in]
This is one is the most dramatic change. And it is a powerful one. Paladins for their entire time up until 9th were terminators with an extra wound, so more durable. But they lost that niche/theme. So this is an easy way to make their 3 wounds go farther. It might seem overpowered but I have a check and balance for it. Keep reading.

[Additional 2cp strat for -1 damage]. Does not stack on paladins (used for regular terminators)
This is for any other normal terminator units. Why they gave this to purifiers I have no idea. Other than money, as mentioned earlier.

[Paladins get brotherhood keyword]
This is because the honored knight keyword is dumb. Instead of giving exclusive buffs to the most elite of the grey knights. It makes them harder to use. And cuts off synergy. I don’t want to always use dragio to get any kind of re rolls on my paladins. They as per the lore are from all the brotherhoods. And accompany grandmasters or captains when needed. So it would make sense they can fall in line tactically with any brotherhood.

[Warlord trait. Bulwark of Titan] can only be taken on foot slog hq
-1 to wound, +1 to wounds.
This is simply to make an hq harder to kill. Most of our hq buffs are fairly minimal. And very few buff durability. Most space marine chapters have tools to create absolute monster captains/chapter masters. This and the other warlord trait was made to give a small bit of that to us.

[warlord trait, (name?)]
+1 wound, 5+ fnp.
Same general idea as above. Can stack on a single captain/grandmaster or spread around for some extra beef

[Paladins can only be taken one squad per grandmaster/captain.]
So here it is. The balance. Paladins are supposed to be the most elite terminators in the entirety of the imperium (not counting custode terminators of course.) so having even 10 on a battle field is rare. So this is how you keep someone from taking too many.

[Grand master and brotherhood captain can take Paladin keyword for 10 points.]
This had some inspiration from the dark angel inner circle if that’s not apparent yet. Paladins are on their way to claiming a captain or grandmaster position. So it makes sense the dudes in those spots have similar buffs.

[Steel heart strat is +1 to hit in shooting and fight phase]
This was a weird and unnecessary nerf to terminator shooting. Possibly a knee jerk reaction to how op our shooting was in 8th.

[Trans human is 1cp for 5 models and 2cp for 6+] like space marine codex instead of 2/3
This was also a clear nerf to having an easy way to buff terminators. And the only instance in any rule book I can find that made this rule cost what it did. Anyone else that has this same rule it’s costed less. Frustrating and silly.

[Brotherhood termintors know armored resilience]
Another one I actually love. At first glance might seem op. But to cast it multiple times you have to be rolling pretty damn high. And since they only have 1 cast this means they give up hammer hand (melee) or smite(offense). So it’s a nice way to give terminators a better save.

And that’s it! So far I have been playing these rules non stop since the new codex came out. And my friends have agreed to them. We havnt run into anything being over the top or imbalanced. And I can actually play full terminators lists without being blasted off the table. Also I’m not forced to play the “good” lists that are boring and mono build. Why the hell would I want to play nothing but dreadknights and interceptors?!

I would love to hear what everybody thinks!

I'm not sure if GK can put 2 WL traits on the same character, if they can then +2W 5+++ and -1 to wound is too much in combination. +2W and 5++ is already stretching it as you're effectively taking a 6W character and turning it into a 12W character, adding -1 to wound on top is over the top.

Unit limits do not nerf units, even if I can only bring 1 Draigo, he would still be overpowered if he cost 99 pts. It is not okay to have units be undercosted just because there is a limit on how many you can take. Your Paladin balance measure is hardly even a half-measure.

If you want people to take no more than one squad then give them a powerful Stratagem, it sounds like they already have that. If taking even one squad is not worth it, then all you need to do is lower points until it is worth it but it is not worth it to take 3 squads.

If GK shooting was OP then how can nerfing a GK shooty Stratagem be considered knee-jerk? It seems like a thought out and measured response.

Actually they can through a stratagem!

And a lot of these “buffs” are actually referenced from other space marine codex’s.

I have a dark angel gravis captain that is toughness 6, 9 wounds, -1 damage, has a 2+ 4++, can’t be wounded on anything better then 4, and a 6+ fnp.

Grey knights don’t have much that can make super beat stick custom hqs. So that was what I’m going for.

As for the cost death guard termintors have more built in buffs then paladins and cost the same. No need for powers, strats, or buffing characters. I’m not trying to make them their equal. But just as an example.

And grey knight shooting was op. However they essentially over nerfed it. Instead of toning it down until it’s good. They nerfed every buff we got in psychic awakening until our basic shooting is back to being fairly bad. And in desperate need of dreadknight support.

All of these ideas were cross referenced with other excising space marine rules. And either toned down or laterally to make them fit.

I know very little about GK. That said, this looks on paper like a pretty significant durability boost (possibly resulting in a paladin death star) without any real downsides. One squad per grandmaster doesn't seem like a real drawback so much as a way of just keeping the paladin buffs from getting out of hand. And as Vict pointed out, +2W, a 5+++, and -1 Damage seems like a lot to be able to load onto a single character.

If you've been losing a lot with these units and your opponents enjoy facing these rules, more power to you. But from the outside looking in, it seems like a pretty big power boost without any drawbacks. Question from someone who hasn't kept up with GK lately: are they really so bad right now that they need all this?

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Stratagem combos should be orbitally lasered out of the game, I'm wondering if you're trying to bring one back Spartan. Do you still have a psy-bolt ammo Strat?
