Brought back into the Emperor's Light, after many years away, by the chance discovery of the Mcfarlane figures. This in turn led me to the much better 1/18 scale Joytoy line. I immediately ordered one, which happened to be the Death Company Sergeant. The last time I played was 4th edition, then life happened. I had no idea what a Primaris was, just figured they renamed stuff, GW does that
I knew I didn't like the weapons and helmets, but the were just Space Marines. So I found Mk7 and "old style "(brand new style last time I played) weapons. I've since learned much has changed, and ordered the latest boxed starter set for the current 40K. My son and I will learn how to play together.

Anyway.
I knew that I didn't really want a Blood Angel collection. I have the two Mcfarlane figures and the red Sororitas, I can't remember what Orders wore what, and that was enough red for me. When I did play, it did happen to be Blood Angels, but only because that was the only color I had in a spray can that was "correct" for Space Marines. But I've always liked the Crimson Fists, since they were the first Space Marines I ever saw, on the box of 30 plastic Space Marines, which in turn led me to the Rogue Trader rulebook. So Crimson Fists they shall be, with the backpacks, helmets, and pauldrons replaced with aftermarket 3D printed Mk7 versions, and the old style weapons. The final goal is a 10 man Tactical Squad, with a Rhino transport, radio controlled(my other hobby is 1/16 rc tanks) with a detailed, functional, troop compartment, able to carry them. I currently have a combat squad of 5 Marines, with a heavy bolter. Only one has had paint applied so far.

A major reason I chose the Joytoy figures to collect is because they are accurately scaled. The Mcfarlane figures are all the same general size, with the Sister, an unenhanced normal human, being the same height as a Primaris Marine. The Joytoy Marines are taller than normal human 1/18 figures. Another reason is the huge 1/18 scale figure market. 1/18 is also known as GI Joe, or 3.75 inch scale. This means there are more figures and accessories available. And I wanted plain old regular Guardsmen. I chose figures from the Acid Rain line, a sci fi figureline, also by Joytoy, that has many figures with an Imperial Guard feel to them. I picked th Steiner figure as my standard Guardsman base figure. The armor is a good proxy for non-Cadian flak, and by using the same base figure and armor but with different heads and accessories I can ensure that they are all uniform. I was able to find a helmet that I liked and could get multiples of, and with las weapons from the same place as the Marine accessories, all they need is a repaint and markings. The markings are still an issue being worked out fully. In a lucky break, it turns out that the Space Marine vehicle decal sheet for the GW models are a pretty close match, providing Chapter and squad pauldron decals. But the Guardsmen, no such luck. Scale Aquilas are non-existent in decal form, and I can't paint well enough at this scale that I'd be satisfied with. Luckily, I was able to find a couple of different Forgeworld etched brass Aquilas in multiple sizes. As with the Marines, the goal is a 10 man squad, plus Commissar, this time with a rc Chimera.

Marine and Guardsman. The helmet is the stock Acid Rain. I got a replacement from Marauder Task Force.

I got the set of 4 Ultramarines, and replacement parts, bringing it up to a 5 man combat squad.

The Death Company Sergeant, with the basic painting done, the Chapter icon is on early, as a test. Plus I wanted to se a Marine after many years away. He still needs detail painting, markings, and weathering.

Compared to the stock Ultramarines Sergeant, who shall become my Fists Sergeant.

The Guardsman, wtih the replacement helmet and lasrifle and laspistol. All his armor is removable, making painting and detailing easier. I still haven't decided on colors yet.

I'm not entirely satisfied with the decal. I remember how much trouble it was to get them to lay down properly on the 28mm minis, and the experience was the same. Multiple applications of Miro Sol finally got it to lay down well enough for a gaming miniature, but it still has visible wrinkles. I may end up using stencils and paint the pauldron markings.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The Commissar is based on a GI Joe Renegades series Cobra Commander. This with the hardest base figure to find, and he almost didn'thappen. Not many trenchcoated figures in this scale. I had to remove the collar since it interfered with the replacement head. It will be remade with green stuff when I add the Commissarial decorations.

When I first saw these, I immediately thought non-Astartes Imperial power armor. An Inquisitor and her power armored Acolytes. The polearms look like 40K comibi-weapons. Power Glaives with flamers. That made me decide Ordo Hereticus. The figure with the bionic arms will be a veteran Guardsman seconded to the Inquisitor's service. I'm going to make him a hellgun. Other than that, they are simply getting Inquisition decals.

I'm still debating on whether or not to try and make the kneepads separate armor pieces and more Mk7 like, but with the articulation, I'm not sure it's possible, and I can't afford to buy a spare figure just to test. I may end up just removing the rim, leaving the pad attached to the greaves.

On the next figure, I want to try and make the torso more Mk7 like. If possible, I want to remove, or at least reduce, the collar rim, and remove the belly armor and replace it with cables. Honestly, I'm not even sure about the other visible differences between Mk7 and Primaris armor yet. Given the height difference between the human and Marine figures, I'm going with them being classic, Firstborn I think they're called, Marines in Mk7 armor. If I'm understanding right, they'd be too sort to be a Primaris Marine.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'm also tweaking tthe Mcfarlane figures. The Marines are staying Blood Angels, but getting Mk7 helmets and old weapons, then detailing and weathering, with the Sister getting detailed. Only the Genestealer is staying untouched.

All my Mcfarlane figures, showing their scale problem. The little guy is a Star Wars Black Series 6" shoretrooper being converted to a Guardsman. The Sister should be about the same height, even with power armor.

They're still nice figures, I'll just need to display the Sister and genestealer away from the Marines and Guardsman.
I hate painting faces. Pre painted bare heads for the regular Marine and Sister.
Kinda Schwarzenegger like.

Much better than I can do.

Unpainted head for the Lieutenant, gotten mostly as a joke based on memes. I'm still going to paint it, but I'm getting a different, prepainted, head for permanent use.

The first figure I'm tackling is the Lieutenant. Helmet swap, and gold being painted.
As he sits now, the gold is finished. All the gold on the figure has been redone, except the halo on the knee, since it appears that's supposed to be a painted badge, not a carved and plated one. Much better than the horrific gold plastic. Trying to find the right green for the eye lenses. I have a green gold color coming today, same brand as the gold. The laurel on the helmet will be painted this, and I'm thinking platinum for the wings on the pauldron Chapter Badge. The blood drop will be painted platinum, then given several coats of transparent red so that it looks like a gem. Then purity seals and weathering and the figure is done, just needing weapons.

Chainsword replacing the floppy power sword.

Well, the first Trooper of the 87th is done, except for markings. Looks like a Guardsman to me.

Once he gets a new head, he'll get personalized gear and weathering.

I may have found decals for the Fists tactical markings and Chapter Badge. If they work, I won't have to paint them.

Took a pic with better lighting that shows the gold more accurately.

The 1/18 are basically my prototypes for figuringoutmy process and colors. I may still do a full repaint of the Guardsman, I haven't quite decided yet. I have a better crimson color I want to try on the Marine before I finalize the paints, but aside from that and decals, the Marines repaint is nailed down.

Decals for my Inquisitor and retinue, and what turned out to be way too small decals for the Fists.

Luckily the Fists decals are usable. I'm going to make the Marines in the boxed starter game Crimson Fists.

I've decided to do a full repaint for the Guardsmen. I'm thinking solid fatigues, with camouflage armor. I quite like the idea of camo with colors suited to a different planet. I just need to decide the colors. This will affect the weathering on the Guardsmen and Marines, as my fluff has them in the same warzone, and my Regiment adapts it's colors and camo for the world on which it's fighting.

The figure I've chosen for the base male Guardsman/NCO. The Steiner figure from the Acid Rain "Dark Source" line. Each will get a different printed head and personalized gear. All the armor except the forearm pieces are removable, making painting much easier.

Suitable Aquila and Imperialis(the winged skull on the helmet) decals for my Guardsmen.
Had to get several sheets, since there's only 2 each on the sheet, in both black and white. The color used will depend on what colors I end up using.

Brass etched Aquilas for things like weapons and equipment. For instance the lasrifles will be getting them on the casing. Out of production from Forgeworld.

This guy, who I ordered so long ago I forgot about, finally got here on the slow boat from China. Not sure what to use him for. Maybe a Stormtrooper or whatever they call them now. His smaller gun will make a decent human sized bolter for either the Commissar or the Inquisitor. Bigger one maybe a non-Arbites combat shotgun

Mcfarlane Blood Angels are done, except for purity seals and weathering. My glue went bad, so I have to wait for the new stuff to arrive.

I'm surprised the Tactical Marine's helmet turned out as well as it did. I was worried about trying to match the red of the figure. Came pretty close. Primed with black, then a base coat Gal Vorbak Red Base, followed with a heavy dry brushing of Astorath Red Dry.

Knocked out a quick scale layout of the Rhino
Going by the official dimensions of the Rhino, this is the size it should be in 1/18 scale.

The Rhino is supposed to be 6.6 meters long, 4.5 meters wide, and 3.6 meters tall.

The Games Workshop kit scales out length wise at 1/55 scale, but is too narrow by about 10mm. Height is way off as well, but I'm going to ignore the official height, as it's supposedly a meter less that the width, and there's no way I'm going to make a Rhino that's as tall as it is wide.

This plan is based off the official dimensions and the GW model. It is about the length of a 1/16 Sherman, and the width of a 1/16 Abrams. Next step is a cardboard mockup, but I'm already thinking it's going to need to be enlarged to fit 10 Marines inside.

Started knocking together the cardboard mockup using the canon dimensions. Yeah, I don't think so. I don't think they took the time to actually draw the thing to scale when they wrote them, or even look at the model.

Length and width seem reasonable, but still a bit to small to me.

I already knew it would be ridiculous, even before I drew out the first one. I'm still going to mock it up, just for giggles. And to figure out how much I need to modify it to get it looking like a Rhino and able to hold 10 Marines.

It's almost as if the person who wrote the official dimensions never actually saw what a Rhino looks like. Going by the official height, the side view looks like this.

Yeah, no way is the Rhino 6.6 meters long, 4.5 meters wide, and then 3.6 damn meters tall! Like a tracked and armored Kia Soul.

Since the official dimensions are almost useless, the plan now is to simply scale up the GW model to 1/18 scale. Needing a starting scale, I chose to use the 4.5 meter width for the "real" Rhino since that seems a good starting point according to my first layout. This would make the GW Rhino scale out at 1/64. Scale that up to 1/18, and you get something like this.

Offical height and length in blue, scaled up 1/64 GW Rhino in orange. Still a bit too small, but a good starting point.

Thanks. Had a lightbulb moment when I was the Death Company Sergeant next to one of my 1/16 Shermans.

The Rhino keeps needing to get bigger and bigger. I need to keep reminding myself, in 40K, vehicles are massive. The Rhino, an APC, is bigger than an M1A2 Abrams. That's huge for an APC. I don't have a 1/18 M1 anymore, so here's a 1/16 one instead. It's already wider than the 1/16 Abrams. And it still needs to get bigger. I need to fit 10 Marines inside. Just like the GW model, the Marine can fit inside, barely.

So it needs to be bigger. But not too much. I don't want it too big.
The Rhino is an ancient Dark Age of Technology STC product. Therefore, they were around before the Space Marines were created, and was designed for normal humans. It is also currently used by the Adeptus Arbites and the Sisters of Battle, normal humans. So it should be cramped for a full 10 man squad of Marines, but do-able. I see it as a capabilty that is used during major battles and emergencies and the like, with most of the routine use being by 5 man combat squads. The squad leader in the TC position on the left, leaving 4 Marines in the troop compartment. But there still needs to be space for 9 Marines to physically fit, but it will be standing room only.

But I also need to make sure that a Marine can use the side hatch, and use the cupola hatches, and this is still too small, but verrry close. Now comes the artistic license part. Like the gamers who convert their Rhinos to "true scale", I have to enlarge it to fit the Marines, while keeping it looking like a Rhino. But unlike gamers, I also have to make sure that the design will actually work. So the road wheels and tracks need room to move, the inner hatches need to slide, and I need to ensure that the rear ramp can be remotely raised and lowered. And all of the mechanics need to be hidden.

It's big.

The Marine is at ground level for the plan. He just fits inside the outer side hatch, which matches 40K artwork. And 10 Marines will fit.

I scaled the GW model using the outer side hatch just fitting a standing Marine. This puts the kit at approximately 1/75 scale. I then scaled that up to 1/18.

Started on Fist number 3. More work now, but easier since I worked out how to break them down.

I've decided to do more to make them look more like Mk.7 Aquila armor. Definitely looks better now. The Sergeant and tactical Marine already done will be getting the mods as well..

I removed the collar rim armor and the kneepad flare. I left the pads attached to the greaves, since there isn't any way to securely attach them to the knee joint, and looking at minis and artwork, there is never really a noticeable separation between them.

I'm trying to decide if I want to fill the calf areas with green stuff to make the greaves a solid piece. I probably will.

Daughter is back from college, so my hobby space has become non existant temporarily. The action figures and r/c have been put on hold for a bit, and woth the current state of 40K, I'm not sure where to begin. That is letting me focus on my HH:AoD Legion. I was originally going to do Imperial Fists, since I've been focusing on the Crimson Fists, and I like the idea of doing 2 versions of Alexis Polux, one as an Imperial Fists captain, and one as first Chapter Master of the Crimson Fists. But Know No Fear is one of my favorite of the Heresy novels, so I also wanted to do the XIII Legion, and I REALLY have wanted to do a Shadowsword in Ultramarines colors just because of the part where 2 are in the force relieving Captain Ventanus and his survivors.

I still plan on doing another Legion army, but the choice of which to do first was sealed when I was able to find a sheet of Ultramarines Legion transfers for a decent price actually in stock somewhere.

I think it's fitting. The first 40K mini I ever did was a newly released plastic beakie from the new RTB01. And now the first mini I did upon my return is a newly released plastic beakie.

Quick paint. Macragge Blue Spray and Base, all the other colors are Vallejo, except the gold which is the same I used on the Blood Angels Lieutenant action figure. Temporary base color until I decide on a basing theme.

And, in my enthusiasm to build the Spartan, I glued the tracks on befor painting, rookie mistake. But it's coming along nicely. But brush painting the white sucked. Definitely need to find my Tamiya tape before I start the Shadowsword.
