Greetings, Hobbyists and Crafters!

Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Riveters Hobby Challenge, Round 38. This round's theme is Elevation (described below) and the round ends on Thursday, June 30. A public voting mechanic similar to the painting challenge is still in the works. Our goal is to elevate and celebrate the aspects of the hobby beyond painting miniatures-- the scratch-building, theme-evoking, and detail-obsessing construction efforts that help immerse our models in a believable and richly textured world. Come one, come all!

The theme for Round 38 was selected by public poll and was originally phrased as follows:
ELEVATION: Your build should rise to some height from the surface of the table; it could be a watchtower, antenna array, gantry, silo, crane, monolith, statue, etc. or it could be a hill, bluff, or other example of high ground. 40k's 5" LoS-blocking terrain is a good reference point.

Please consider building and painting playable terrain pieces, decorative terrain, display plinths and dioramas, table tiles or modular components, game aids, restoration or conversion projects... if it isn't a wargaming figure, it probably qualifies. Feel free to stretch the limits of the theme as much as you can, just make it work!

Please complete the build and paint phases in the course of the two-month challenge period. Please post up to six (6) high-quality photos in this thread before the deadline expires in your local time zone. A member of the League will compile and post the finished work for public review. Please post materials and progress photos here as well, ask and answer questions, offer insights and advice, and celebrate the work as much as the finished products.

Rather than wait until the last minute to see if I can get something done, I am going to start earlier.

I have an old printer I took apart that I have been meaning to use for Necromunda for ages...it can have at least three raised platforms for elevation...and it has been sitting for so long Mrs. Captain Brown has been pushing for it's recycling.

Cheers,

CB

Captain, I'm sure you'll work wonders with that as your starting point... you have such great instincts with found objects, and I loved your VHS cassette and Gatorade bottle tower.

Nevelon... I hope your unfinished hills find a home here!

DJJazzyJeff, likewise... your cardstock gantries seem like a natural fit here as well.

I'm toying with a return to the Realms of Battle board I restored a few years back and some unbuilt MDF terrain I've been sitting on. I have built and painted two towers and a bridge section between them, with another tower and bridge section unbuilt... the project stalled because of a mismatch in height between the hilltops on the Realms of Battle boards and the tops of the towers. I think my pink foam game is solid enough now that I can build extensions for the hilltops to let them meet the bridges and towers naturally.

On the other hand, the one rock pile I made with the wire twist trees for the last round was too small; once I added all the textures, I couldn't even squeeze a squad of five Sororitas onto it. Maybe I'll just have another go at that, but go wider and taller than before.

I'd like to request a ruling from the LOER community as to whether I can resume work on the Aerial Delivery Service diorama for this round of competition. What's picutred below I reckon to be about 30% of the total build I have rattling around in my brain:

I'm ambivalent myself- I can see it represents a fair amount of work already and am happy to think on another idea to enter. Having finished an entire river, I feel I'm on a roll!

My vote is that you go for it. The League has always been in support of people finishing terrain projects. A sweet diorama is so much better than a piece of a landing pad that sits on your bench. I feel with the more relaxed version of the competition that we have adopted, you are completely in line to resume work on something you've already started.

And if you need a second opinion, here's Machail encouraging me to finish my terrain that I've been working on since January:

My thoughts exactly... a contest needs a degree of parity, but a challenge just pushes us all to get stuff done!

I am going to try to build some modular terrain that can be stacked into a decent height. I am thinking shipping containers and shanty type buildings that can be used for Killteam or Necromunda. My main hope is to emulate a Borderlands aesthetic, though I doubt my ability to do so. This is the base concept that I hope to buid off. This is the short term goal with the long term goal being more pieces that work with this concept.

Question if my build is complete can I still post?

I'd say if it's completely finished, it's a better fit for either the P&M forum or the Showcase forum. I just got done looking over your other thread and your table looks amazing! I'll go out on a limb and say on behalf of the League that a partially finished piece should have around 50% of the work left to go, ideally with both build and paint unfinished. We're all about finishing up unfinished projects and sharing process details as we go.

As I said, your table is fantastic. Much of it, especially the mountainside structures, is a perfect fit for this cycle's theme. Any chance you need another tower, spire, or lookout somewhere? I also think either the bridge or the gate would fit; the gate needs to be plenty tall, and the bridge might as well be infinitely high off the ground.

Thanks for joining us!

Have some pieces cut out and ready to start building. As a side note I have always believed the mantra of "measure twice, cut once" and as such followed it here. I was a bit surprised when after cutting out the first test pieces that things didn't match up to my sketches. I checked measurements on the pieces and they were in line with the measurements which were in line with the sketches. It was only after some head scratching that I realized my mistake.

When I did my initial sketches I didn't take into account the thickness of the material I was working with. Before going into production I realized this and factored it into the measurements I was going to use. Checked everything again and since it looked good I started cutting. The problem was when I did the adjustment I adjusted the length of the piece, not the width of the piece like I needed to. Thankfully I was able to catch this with the first couple pieces I cut as opposed to after cutting all 36 out. Furthermore I was able to cut the incorrect pieces down to be usable with only a minimal amount of excess drop. In the end everything has worked out while also reminding me to double check my adjustments to make sure I am not "fixing" the wrong thing. Hopefully this is the only part of the project that goes a bit sideways. Now its time to start building.

I should probably check before posting, but how do we feel about submitting nearly complete projects? I have a two story building that just needs a roof and some interior detailing.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Have been making some steady process getting stuff built. Have the container pieces skinned and ready for paint. Now on to the rest.

Those containers look great- that's some steady hand, precise angle cutting there!

Great work everyone!

Mr. Nobody, an informal guideline has been not-more-than-half-done-ish... we are all about helping people get lagging projects over the line, but we're also big on seeing what can be done in two months. Post a photo if you like, and this round's entrants can weigh in if they like, but chances are that "nearly complete" may not suit the challenge (but we'd all love to see it get finished!).

I am a week away from clearing the end of the school year, and then it's go time! I don't know exactly what I'll do, but it will involve XPS foam (again). I pulled over the car with my kids in their car seats and they watched their dad dash through traffic to recover about 20 square feet of XPS in a half-dozen pieces that was blowing across the road.

Thanks, but all compliments should go to the straight edge I used. I am useless with out it.

Latest project update. Have the remaining blocks skinned. I also made some ladders to facilitate verticality. My next goal is to start adding some greebles and other details and then get them primed up.

Can I enter a project I've already started on? I'm slowly building a set of terrain inspired by the technique of wire-sculpted trees. A 4x4 foot natural board with trees over 5" as well as rocks and hills.

All I have built so far is some prototype trees and the wire armature for more.

Edit/s: Oh I just realized this contest started a month ago, what I thought was a head start is probably lagging behind, lol.

Also I see that at least 50% to go is reasonable. I probably have 80+% to go as of now. Looking at the date on my pic of my prototype trees, that was May 5th.

That’s essentially what I’m doing with my butte (and I was thinking about doing a similar ridge too, but not this month I think.)

I say yes, come one, come all! I'm not inclined to let a project's history get in the way of its completion, so let's see some trees, some hills, some rocky outcrops. If it ever does matter in meaningful ways, we'll deal with partially finished entries, but for now, let's clear the decks and get some projects rolling!

I think this is the current list... can we get some mid-point progress pics as June rolls around?

Captain Brown: Printer Cartridge Necromunda Platform
Meer_Cat: Aerial Delivery Service Platform
DJ Jazzy Jeff: Cardstock Towers and Catwalks
Peterhausenn: Cardstock Shanties and Cargo Containers
Jadenim: EPS Styrofoam Butte
ShadowCaptainMathius: ??? (expressed some interest... got a project underway?)
Mothsniper: TBD
Mr. Nobody: Two-Story Building
Skinflint Games: Rocky Spires
Insectum7: Wire Trees & Rocks
MacPhail: TBD...

Did I miss anyone? I'm still undecided... I have a bunch of MDF towers and bridges that need building, so maybe I'll go pre-fab on this round.

Well, I've settled on an entry for this cycle: a huge mountain of unbuilt and unpainted MDF from Prometheum Forge. I'm adding on to a small set I already painted; this will add another tower, bridge, and walkway, a triple-tank storage tower, two watchtowers with spiral stairs, and a bunch of ladders. I did have the cans prepainted from when I did the first batch, but the rest is just out of the shrink wrap. The initial push went really well and I've got all of it built and more than half of it painted.

@MacPhail, that is a lot of mdf.

Have spent the last few days trying to come up with bits to add to the pieces I have built. Since I do not have many to start with I decided to see if I could make some molds and replicate them. Been mostly successful. The weather is supposed to be favorable tomorrow so I plan on getting them primed and start the painting. All told I feel that I am on schedule as my goal in these challenges is to use the first month for building and the second for paint.

How is everyone doing? I know Peterhausenn is on pace, and DJJazzyJeff is posting good progress to his blog. I'll have home-stretch pics by later this week. Progress photos, anyone?

I'm just about done, just adding graffiti which is a final detail. I have some more pieces and sections to make, so I could show some pictures of that, but I'm not currently working on them. I'll try to get some final shots.

I'm not going to submit the Aerial Delivery Service- it's too far along for me to be comfortable with that. I'm unlikely to get anything else built in time, so my participation streak will have to end with one in a row. I've got an idea and some pieces gathered for another project, but hate to start something and have it join the other three that are sitting around half-finished.

I'm very much enjoying seeing the other projects develop, though- some really great stuff!

Rock on!
