If you've been reading my painting and modeling blog you might have seen that I am back on a 90-2000s metal kick with metal IG and Necromunda models. Particularly I've been obsessed with the Mordian Iron Guard who go out to fight aliens and demons wearing their Sunday-go-to-meeting best.

So I figured it was a good time to look back at how it all started for the mighty sons of Mordia, with White Dwarf 184!

The cover shows a scantly clad barbarian at a rave with his buddies and is a classic example of GW understanding that sex sells.

This particular issue is from April of 1995. It was a magical time, Clinton was president, Major was PM, Mortal Kombat was in the theaters... the wonder years.

But today this book is now old enough to drink and vote, and has probably already had 1 or 2 failed marriages, served a tour in Afghanistan and is wondering if it will can really earn a living making reaction videos on You Tube. So drink a shot if you're older than this magazine.

The magazine's news section opens with a job announcement for 'eavy Metal painters (this was before they renamed the studio Dainty Plastic) and more importantly, a proofreader!

Yes gentle readers, the position of GW proofread once existed... It was indeed a magical time.

I also note that while they call this a difficult and demanding job they ask for high school qualifications (A levels) so uh, yeah. There's that.

Other news included releases for 40k, Fantasy, Epic and of course Warhammer Quest.

Other news is Chaos Dwarves for Blood Bowl. Chaos Dwarves were always a weird faction, they got rules, models, background, but even their army book had a disclaimer to the effect of "White Dwarf presents". Were they done outside the regular studio or something? Or did GW want an out to (ahem) squat them in future editions if they didn't work out?

Warhammer Quest may have gotten the cover, but the lead story is the coming of Codex: Ultramarines! Who, as you of course know, as UNMATCHED IN VALOUR, and RENOWNED FOR THEIR LOYALTY, and without question are SUPREME WARRIORS.

Wow.

And that's just the opening fluff.

I bet every Space Marine secretly wishes he was an Ultramarine.

(And this is by Rick Priestley and Jervis Johnson! So now can we lay off poor Matt Ward?)

The Primarchs really weren't all that important in Rogue Trader days, other than Leman Russ I'm not even sure they got names, much less the whole background of Super Dooper Warriors etc, etc. Maybe the Chaos Primarchs from Epic had some background but even then not all that much. Really a lot of that wasn't filled in until 3rd edition.

In 2nd edition though, they did get names and chapters. And here, for maybe the first time, we start to hear about the unsurpassable Roboute Guilliman.

Lessee, space orphan, found in a capsule, grew up with incredible strength, fond of wearing blue...

Holy @#$%, he's Superman!

Nah. His dad was a Consul, he grew up to be a general, returned home to find someone tried to assassinate his dad on the Senate floor...

Totally Augustus Caesar.

Anyhoo, Augustus hunts down Brutus and his buddies, Macragge flourishes, Emperor comes by, off to outer space, to save the human race...

You know the rest of the song.

There is also a legitimately good set up here. Roboute mortally wounded, in a stasis field, hey is that thing healing?

I'm kind of impressed they set something up and followed through 20 years later. GW gets some criticism for retcons, so they should definitely get some praise for planning ahead.

As you might expect there were new marines to show off too. Speaking of retcons, 2nd edition saw the near-complete disappearance of Beakies from art and models to be replaced by the frowny-face or Vader marines.

The models were nice though. And for another retcon this is the time that we were told Librarians must wear blue, tech marines red and medics white. I remember there was some wailing and gnashing of teeth on Usenet at the time over this retcon and GW telling us to repaint our models.

Thank goodness they didn't change base sizes huh?

Finally GW celebrated the opening of a new store with coupons!

Coupons, some elders may recall, allowed people to buy things... at a cheaper price!

Today of course things are different and store opening are marked by giving people a chance to buy limited edition stuff, at a higher price.

The March of Progress!

That's it for tonight, join us later as we hear about Warhammer Quest, take a survey and learn to make terrain from nothing but a cereal box and a pair of scissors!

Play us out Space Battleship Yam-I mean Argo.

I love retro Ultramarines. While I have Coat d'Arms copy of that original blue that I use for the base color, I don't have the skill to really pull off that retro style.

And we're back with the next chapter of the award-seeking Retro Review series!

As the proud owner of a $200 Battlezone Fronteris box (or will be if/when the mail boat arrives next ) I am a fan of good terrain and willing to pay for it. I still have dreams to make a set of properly grimdark fortress walls.

So how much would I pay for something like this?

Um, how much is a box of cereal these days?

Now to protect the delicate eyes of other people who've spent a few ipads on terrain I will spoil these top secret plans from Rick Priestley and Robin Dews.

Spoiler:

And remember, these are Chapter Approved and therefore allowed in GW tournaments!

Moving on there.s a survey you can send in for a chance to win one of everything GW makes.

Spoiler:

I don't see an expiration date, some maybe I'll send one and see what happens.

Warhammer Quest finally gets an article next.

Snark aside, that is a cool picture. And interestingly does not follow the left-right pattern most other art did (allowing one big image to be used as two smaller images). And definitely benefits from that.

I never played it but looks like a quality product and pretty good for 1995.

"among the best plastic miniatures we have ever designed" they say. And the Black Orcs released a month earlier run off and cry in the corner...

And finally we have a rules preview of the upcoming IG codex. Around this time they were featuring a different metal regiment each month, and remember being a bit disappointed that the Rambo guys and the Pretty Boys had the same stats and rules. These veteran rules correct that. Rather than tying rules to models, they allowed you to give various bonuses to units. Maybe your guys are Dead Eye Shots, or Stealthy, or Street Fighters, it's up to you.

It's a refreshing way to do it, so you can choose the models you want AND the play style you want.

What a brilliant idea, if only such a thing could be done today.

I've build a 8x6 table worth of fully painted city terrain out of cardboard sheets. I've earnt my modular plastic terrain kits thankyouverymuch!

Quest remains one of our group's fav games, and one we've spent a lot of time playing. It is the perfect blend of dungeon crawling and loot gathering combined with blisteringly levels of unfair rules that punish you seemingly at random. Terrific fun.

At the time these really were some of the best single plastics GW had done. Four unique character models, in plastic, with that level of detail? Basically unheard of.

I remain baffled as to how WHQ, with its rules vaguer than a clobbered gobbo, repetitive dice-chucking combat featuring very little in the way of tactics, and utter disdain for anything approaching balance or fairness* can be so much fun. Yet it is. I went in expecting to find it dull and was amazed to fall in love with it.

I get the feeling it was developed by the arcane and long-lost method of simply playtesting game after game until someone said "Hey, this is fun now" and someone else said "Right, ship it!"

There seem to be some mysterious mysteries concerning exactly what went on with WHQ behind the scenes, though. It's one of those games that GW staff have historically been reluctant to talk about. One thing I did hear (on the internet so it must be true) is that the individual character packs, each with a single miniature and some cardboard bits, weren't cost-effective to produce and ended up killing the line.

There were reportedly four expansions planned, but only two made it to retail (Orcs and Undead). The unfinished Skaven expansion turned up in White Dwarf in half-completed form ... and the Chaos Dwarf expansion never saw the light of day at all apart from a single unexplained room tile in White Dwarf that didn't even come with a card to let you use it in your games.

*OK, the utter disdain for anything approaching balance or fairness is one of the reasons I love it. Other dungeon crawls can feel like carefully curated theme-park rides where you're never too endangered lest it kill your beloved character and spoil your fun. WHQ on the other hand will cheerfully kill you all in the first room because hey, if you're mad enough to charge into a dungeon full of monsters with nothing but a sword and a loincloth, you have no one to blame but yourself when the snotling drops a boulder trap on your head.

The WHQ cover art is indeed fantastic ... until you notice the odd anatomical things going on with that barbarian's thigh. Now you can't unsee it, can you.

Nope, not giving them any praise on that. They did the same thing with the background for Lion El'Johnson and Leman Russ. The clock of 40k was always set at 1 minute to midnight and, at that time, it looked like the story was not meant to move forward, only ever expand sideways. The story moving on years later was definitely not planned for.

I still have those plans.

The bunkers never lasted past a house move but they were very modular.

Three together to form an 'L' shape. No problem. Add a cardboard oblong sized to fit inside the strongpoint section, place another bunker on top and you had towers that could then be connected by the walkways.

I do still have multiples of the WD 169 Bunkers though. They will survive every house move.

The article would be improved like 300% if they had used GW boxes for the terrain. 400% if they'd included a line about GW brand cardboard being specially chosen for its suitability in making terrain and why settle for anything less?

Ah well. Maybe next time.

Before getting to the Mordian Iron Guard (who you may recall is why I'm doing this) we may as well close out the rest of the issue.

Epic Space Marine was still GW's "3rd game" at this point so the issue closes with a clash between Imperial Titian Legions and Tyranids.

The Imperium gets Reaver Titans, knights and IG/tech guard.

(Most of the models classic RT designs)

While the nids get a swarm with 2 bio titans.

Note the hex-shaped cards. Nids at the time had a neat mechanic, to build you army you had to have synapse creatures in the center and the arrows on the sides told you how many units they could have under them to keep the hive mind going.

So who won? The even-then ancient RT models or the shiny new Tyranids?

Well the answer may SHOCK YOU.

Spoiler:

The winner was the Orks!

Well OK, the text makes it clear it was the Nids but still. Good thing they were hunting up a High School Graduate-level proofreader huh?

Finally we have catalogue pages and this striking picture of the mail order trolls in their natural habitat.

And in closing a reminder that the GREATEST OF ALL SPACE MARINE CHAPTERS are coming.

And join us tomorrow when I finally take a look at the Mordian Iron Guard!

And the greatest investment opportunity you will ever find!

That was the first Epic battle report I ever read. Skipped over them until that point, but the 'Nids won me over.

That army organisation - the hexagonal one with hive nodes - is something I've thought about ever since. I thought that all armies should have unique FoCs ever since seeing that.

Finally, definitive proof that Orks are never defeated in battle. If they win they win. If they die they die so it doesn't count. If they run away they can always come back for another go. And if they aren't even in the battle or indeed on the same planet, they assassinate the proofreader, nick all the credit and win anyway.

And we're back with the last and final installment on this Retro Review!

The Mordian Iron Guard are one of the five metal regiments introduced for 2nd Edition Imperial Guard. Prior to that the IG range wore the jumpsuits and football padding of the Necromundan/Archadian Spiders, with some old Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper models mixed in.

The 2nd edition line however leaned heavily into historical models (the Perry Twins are avid historical fans and currently run one of the best historical lines around if you haven't checked them out - https://www.perry-miniatures.com/).

Tallarn were WWI Arabs
Cadians were WWII Canadian shock troops
Valhallans WWII Russians
Catachans WWII/Vietnam Americans (though more Rambo than history)
While Mordians were 19th Century Germans and Russians

None of these are exact, that's the general inspiration as far as I can tell.

The uniforms were historical, the poses very natural and dynamic, the expressions great and the line... completely impractical. 5 different regiments (with Steel Legion and Vostroyans added later) each with a half dozen or more different riflemen, 2 sergeants, 3 special weapons dudes, several heavy weapon teams (each with unique sculpts) and an officer! It made for a huge problem for stores and customers. Unless you were ordering directly from GW (in these days before ubiquitous internet), you had to count on your FLGS not only having the regiment you want, but the model you want. If you need Cadian plasma gunners and your shop only has Mordian Flamers... oh well. No sale.

And even as the lines were expanded not every regiment got every special weapon (IIRC Catachans had all 4, but only if you could find the limited edition female Jungle Fighter with a grenade launcher). Most never got standard bearers or radio operators, and converting metal is really hard, especially when were almost no plastic bits to use for it.

So yeah, the Moridan Iron Guard come from the world of Mordian (which I am going to keep calling Mordia cause Mordian looks like the adjective to me!) one of those science fiction worlds where one side is eternal day, the other eternal night. Life sucks, only brutal discipline can keep order.

Then one fine day (night) the skies open up, daemons and chaos marines pour out, cultists emerge from their caves and everything goes to hell.

Fortunately the Iron Guard are able to turn them back by uh... forming a firing line and shooting them. A lot. And also by not running away.

And so we get our 19th century Napoleonic/Crimean/US Civil War rifleman army to go with the WWII city fighters, the desert raiders and the Whole Army Where Everyone is Rambo.

The article also introduces new rules for the IG Lascannon, the metal shield on it give models a +1 save. Because in 2nd edition every small bit on a model needs a rule. Except of course when they don't. Modrian tunics, Catachan biceps and Cadian shoulderpads for example all gave the same 6+ save. Because. Reasons.

At first the Mordians were limited to a single squad with a grenade launcher and lascannon, but later the line was expended with more special and heavy weapons (though not all) and more riflemen.

The poses for me are the real strength of the 2nd edition line, within the limits of 1-part metal models the Perrys just got some incredible movement and character for the IG.

The sculpts are just incredible, especially since they were done by hand. There's an Imperial Eagle on the hat, the breast, the belt buckle, the canteen AND the rifle. On every single rifleman!

Having now painted 60 or 70 of them I do kind of wish that they'd leaned a bit more heavily into Napoleonic poses though.

I would absolutely love some Mordians on guard duty or at attention or marching. Unlike other regiments and factions I think you can absolutely get away with it with a 19th Century looking force.

A few years later the Mordians got pith helmet heads to make the Praetorians, basically an entire IG army inspired by the 1964 Michael Caine film Zulu. They also got a bugler, a standard bearer and, most irritatingly a kneeling rifleman. I would kill for some kneeling Mordian riflemen!

A plasma gun would be nice too...

(There's some historical models, including from the Perrys, that are close, but if anyone knows of a good source for Modrian- equivalent STLs let me know.)

Anyway I promised an investment tip, and here you are.

That MIP 2.75 GBP Lieutenant is selling for over 25 GPB today, a roughly 10x return. If you'd put 1000 GBPs into Valhallan Lieutenants in 1995 you'd be sitting on over 10k today. And I can't imagine what you'd be worth if you'd put the money into squad boxes!

So that just about wraps up this issue of WD. One of these days I have to get to the Rifts or Shadowrun retro reviews, but no promise when that will be.

They never got a Plasma Gun, but they all got their full heavy weapons in the end.

I'd've loved a Cadian Grenade Launcher, or a Tallarn Flamer, but sadly no...

I did like how the Missile Launchers differed. Cadians and Catachans had these set things with a big targeting bi-pod. Tallarns, Mordians and Valhallans just shoulder fired the things.

I actually have a ton of extra Mordian Mortar crew. I got around 6 of the crewman with the controller to use as Cyclops operators, a few more Mortar crew to act as Basilisk Earthshaker crew, and an extra set of Lascannon crew for one of my Griffons.

Not my perfect Guard Duty guy, and the uniform is different, but good enough for government work as they say.

Once nice thing you could do with the old regiment was mix and match. I remember one guy used Catachans as heavy weapon teams (working hard, took off their armor), Cadians as infantry and Mordians as HQ.

Another guy used Tallarn as troops and Preatorians as HQ, "Operation Iraqis to the Front" he'd say.

There's a lot of things I expect in a game of 40k, a commentary on British colonialism is not one of them

If anyone is looking for 'almost Mordians' Victoria's Miniatures and Mad Robot both do some really good ones in resin with tons of options. I've a squad or two of Vic's female dress uniforms I need to get to one day.

My only complain is there's not many Napolenonic poses like troops at attention, troops marching etc.

But I'm also coming to the idea that multipart riflemen just are not fun. Yes, for any regiment you need at least one dude who can swap arms for various options - medic, special weapon, sergeant, banner man, radio dude. But one of the best things for me about the metal regiments is 90% of the models are ready to paint with no assembly.

Looking at historicals I found some near-Mordians but nothing exact. Lots of folks with peak caps and tunics but no one seems to have the epaulettes (or the lasguns but we already knew that). But if you're looking to just add a swarm of conscripts or something it should work.

The fun thing about the Mordians has to be their ridiculous frowny faces. I love it.

Recently been painting a whole bunch of 2e and 3e Guard (metal Catachans, Cadians and Steel Legion) and they're really lovely minis. I'm not opposed to plastic Cadians, but the metals are really nice and characterful miniatures. I doubt we'll see multiple guard ranges supported to that level ever again, it was probably a poor business decision but it's changed the guard as a faction forever - the distinctive dress and culture of guard regiments is a solid part of the background now.
