I have a rebel grot army gathering dust which I might be able to spruce up soon, is it worth getting the AM codex or should I wait for the next one - do we think one's coming out soon?

Last time I bought one (some editions ago) a new one was announced within a month, so it was a bit of a waste for me.

I'd guess it's a few months away. Not imminent, but not too far away. Almost certainly won't end 2022 without seeing it.

Personally I'd wait, depending on how quickly you want to game with them.

I would wait, or get one cheap second hand if you can't wait. There's a fair few going for £10-15 on eBay at the moment.

I stopped buying GW printed media a while ago, it becomes invalidated too quickly, particularly if you collect a faction that doesn't get its codex until near the end of the current edition of the game.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Like others have said, if you're going to get one? Get it cheap.

Another problem is that the rules are currently scattered across these:

Astra Militarum Codex
The Balance Dataslate
Power Rating Update 2022
Chapter Approved ’2022
Warzone Octarius Book 1: Rising Tide
Psychic Awakening: The Greater Good

It might be simpler just to wait out the last three months.

Of those, two are PDFs available for free on WHC, and - assuming you mean the points element of CA2022 these days - a third will join them on there as of the next release.

Rising Tide gives the Cadia supplement, if the OP is interested in that, along with the Inquisition and Fortification rules.

I can't remember what the content from TGG was - was that Tank Aces, or something like that?

As things stand, you only need to buy the 'dex right now - and, as was suggested above, I'd look for a cheaper second-hand copy rather than a new one at this point in the edition. Rising Tide and The Greater Good might be of use, but are not required. The points from CA2022 are currently available in French on WHC, and will be generally free as of the next CA release, as per the announcement at WarhammerFest.

Buying 40k printed material isn't worth it. Period.

Even less so when the book's about to be replaced.

Thing is, we have no idea on the timeline for it being replaced. It could be anywhere from Q3 this year, through to Q1 or Q2 next year, if we're really unlucky.

One option of course is subbing either to app or warhammer+ though of course you need to feel value on the other stuff for that. That way you get access to 8e book rules via app and have zero need for physical books.

I benefit similar on aos side having started fyreslayers and dok before new book so could play happily without piracy or having to buy soon to be replaced book. And the orruk model plus animations were worth enough for me to pay the price. Of course not for everyone.

If app isn't option and don't want to go for piracy 2nd handed would be my route. Cheaper so hurts less when it gets replaced this/next year.
