So I am new to the game considering I last played 3rd Ed, and working with the Nids.

Myself with the rest of the family all are collecting
Armys white scars, dark angels and space wolves, so with me playing nids I am way off the rest hah.

Now I got the new tyranids combat patrol box and during the beginning I am finding the swarmlord is just stomping all the armys on his own which is no fun for any of us, so while in my local warhammer shop I spotted a box with a Tyrannofex model and I thought he was cool then found I could also build a Tervigon which spawned extra Teramgants (so frigging cool).

At mo we are doing 500 point battles while we all learn the game and moving upto 1000 point battles when our collections have built up.

So far having loads of fun and success respawning termagants.

Question to you guys can this beast stand up in larger fights if I ever get a chance to go 1500 to 2000 points? Or should I work on replacing him?

I am also interested in people's thoughts in general about this Tervigon good and bad and even other players who live it and use it what builds do they use?

It is cheap for the stats, it respawns guants for an exisitng unit and spawns a unit from zero, and it untargetable if there are guants near by.
Like almost all tyranid monsters right now, it is good.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Welcome back to 40k during a time where you can enjoy the best Tyranid codex ever made.

You came back at the perfect time as a tyranid player.

Nearly eveything in the codex is usable on the table top!

Tervigons are great. You can use them at higher points just fine.

Go ahead and ignore all of Karol's advice, he has a hate boner going for bugs right now because there are a few units that dominate the meta currently.

I get why Swarmlord is dominating in 500 pt games, most any huge single model becomes a lot more oppressive when your opponent has less tools to deal with it. Consider that the Swarmlord in a 500 pt list is essentially what is known as a skew list.

Now in the frame of a 500 pt game I would say that it is incredibly unlikely that your opponent will be able to kill a Tervigon over the course of 5 turns, but the major difference is that the Tervigon is going to be doing a lot less to your opponent than the Swarmlord is. Tervigons are a big sack of wounds that are easy to protect with a big blob of gaunts but they have very little offensive capabilities.

All that said I would consider going for something even smaller if you want better games at 500 pts, the Tervigon is still a little under half your points in that range and unless you opponent brings some decent anti-tank/monster weapons it is just gonna sit there as a big road block for them. Wait to run the big bugs once you guys move on to 1000 pt games if you want to have better games.

As far as scaling I would say that the Tervigon scales well into high point games but will always be more of a support unit than getting much done on its own. Swarmlord in a 2000 pt game is still gonna be a monster, eating through anything he touches, but the Tervigon is going to act more like an anchor for your swarm. It can give out some nice buffs, do a little damage and is a great option for psychic actions if you want to go that route.

Thanks for the reply guys, my son who is building the white scars has actually got a mean force that can cripple me in 500 points.

Chaplin on bike
3 bikes
Atv
Suppressors
Eliminators

With all bikes and Atv using twin linked that's 20 shots into the termaguants, that should drop them below 15, (I have a squad of 21) leaves the cannons ,fusal snipers and multi melta to do a max of 41 damage in one turn to my Tervigon.

That to me is crazy but it works and not bad for 500 point army.

I enjoy them. My little battle report with one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR4FMeIyK1U

As for 1500 and 2000, she still has her place. Having her run up the middles with her swarm is very obnoxious for space marines players as they don't have the shots to deal with it... and can't target her until they do. Going Leviathan and Zoanthropes makes it even more annoying. At the end of the day, more points just means you can bring more to add to the annoyance.

Is it competitive? Probably not, but you're playing with family so even 1 is more then enough to hold it's spot, even if points dilute it a little.

And if anyone in your family complains, you can always run 3 with nothing but gants!!!! Now THAT would be super cheesy and unbeatable for most players.

For op try to get at least to 1k fast if you want to use that big models. Game is largely designed for 2k and starts to buggle on smallei/bigger games. With expensive models taking half the points more so. This leads to rather binary games quite easily.

Swarmlord will be less oppressive at 1k. Even less at 1.5k.
