Hello,
I'm working my way back into 40k and hoping to actually play at my local store soon. I've been looking at some of the new models and am a little confused about base sizes. The new plague marines I picked up are bigger in size than what I used to have and use a 32mm base. Now looks may be deceiving but looking at GW's site it looks like the standard chaos marines are also closer in size to primaris marines and using 32mm bases. Is this an across the board change?

Pretty much all marines are on 32s these days. Some characters are on larger ones.

There isn’t really an offical pattern. Some guys are on the base size they are because the guy who designed it thought it fit better. I’d not worry about it for now. Some tournaments might want things up to a modern standard, but if you tell the FLGS you are getting back in with old stuff, people should not give you flack.

“On the base it came with” is generally OK.

To add on to what Nevelon said, 40K doesn't have official base sizes for units the way Age of Sigmar does. I believe Warhammer World events require using the 'most recent'*, but outside of that using the base a model came with is generally acceptable.

* Which is downright unworkable for some armies, where a single kit might come with one base size or the other at the luck of the draw. Eg Tyranid Warriors sometimes being packed with 40mm, and sometimes with 50mm.

Base sizes only matter at events, in where there are always enforced some house rules. Base size requirements is just one of those.

Otherwise there's no rule about base sizes and RAW everything is good.
