Throughout our current PtG campaign I've built up a nearly all Stormdrake Guard force.
8 dragons (2 heros/6 guard) + 2 3man infantry units .

Looks awesome on the table (even as WiP paintwise), works really well, fits the whole monsters/exploring Ghur theme, etc.

But man 8 dragons are hard to transport. Wings/tails/heads sticking out in all directions....
And as each gets fully painted up it gets more so. :(

This is one of the BIGGEST problems with modern Warhammer games. Big models look awesome and the rules let us take loads but they are utterly nightmarish to transport because of their size.

Personally I think that you've a few options to consider

1) Magnetic trays. The upside here is that with magnets on the base and a metal tray you can store a lot more models in less space than you can with foam. Since you don't have to have foam around the models they just free sit on the tray. Magnets will hold it in place. Heck you can even mount them on the sides and top if you set things up with metal sides and such - though most people like to keep things flat. It won't take a heavy pounding (do not use for air travel) but it will certainly work for basic carrying around town and to and from the car and such.

2) Foam - downside is foam itself takes up space around the model. So as you get more models the amount of case you need gets very quickly very large. The upside is that it will protect things very well - though sometimes really thin details can be at more risk on chunky models at times (getting snagged on the foam). But in general this can be more suitable for stuff that might wobble or bend naturally or for air transport.
It will take way more knocks and bumps.

3) A hybrid of the two. A case with foam and magnetic trays all in one. This can be a best of both worlds situation. Also some models, esp flying ones, might not be all that well balanced on their flight peg for magnetic transport. So you might well feel a lot safer having your infantry on a magnetic sheet and then your dragons off their flight stems and in foam.

After that you can look around for optoins. Battlefoam are expensive, but they do have magnetic trays, foam trays and you can mix and match what you need with their cases. They've got cases all the way up to roller ones and you can also combine some of their cases using zippers to expand them.

KRG Multicase do mostly foam and have options from cheap reinforced card cases (good but not weatherproof); to fabric to aluminium cases. Last I checked they were still all foam based without magnetic trays.

Gathering the Informations.

It's a big reason why I'm refusing to look at flying stands these days. Magnets in the model and a piece of scenery on the base works way, way, way better.

Just wish I'd done it long ago!

The worst are models that have the flight built into the model itself on thin strands. Models like the

Celestant-Prime https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Stormcast-Eternals-Celestant-Prime
Sevireth https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Lumineth-Realm-lords-Sevireth-Lord-of-the-Seventh-Wind-2021
Khinerai https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Daughters-Of-Khaine-Khinerai-Lifetakers-2018

Can be worse because, without modification, the model is already in flight by design. This makes them look really cool because they don't have a clear flight stand, but it also means that they can be weaker in some regards. Eg Khinerai look fantastic (and I own loads of them); but they wobble on their tails. Strong enough to support them yes, but they "feel" weak compared to a flight stand

The Wind Spirits are actually pretty robust in their design. They just barely fit into a 2 level manga rack slider 720 from Battlefoam.

I don't think you can meaningfullyplay GW games without magnetizing your bases though. If it's gotta be cheap, get a steel baking tray and chuck it in a box of similar dimensions for transport. My gaming group will be making a massive order from battlefoam come black friday.

Sell everything and get Bastion Carthalos, Annhilators, and an allied Gotrek. And you just need a lunchbox. VOILA!

HA! No.
My approach to this game is quite the opposite. Minis come INTO my collection. They don't leave.

Great timing for this thread as I'm trying to find out a way to tackle this exact problem! ATM my go to is magnetic sheets at the bottom of a Really Useful Storage Box (like the Duncan Rhodes storage video), but as I am now finding out, my Stardrake and subsequently Stormdrake Guard won't fit. I think I'll settle for simply getting a bigger box, but I really don't know what to do with those frankly horrible flying stands on the Guard. Assuming you can take the dragons off the flying stand, I'd still be worried about them moving round the box and getting scratched once detached.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

Yes, that's the problem. Transport wise it doesn't really matter wether you take them off the bases. Because of their wings/tails/heads they take up quite a bit of space. With the bases they take up more space.
And yes, once assembled, unless you glue them in, the dragons are removable. They're not completely stable in play though if the flight stands aren't glued in.

Thier bases/flight stands:
1) Aren't really that bad. They're just big. Big enough to properly support the model (base) & tall enough (flight stands) to look good on the table.
2) You'd have the same issue with any reasonable sized base/flight stand.

My 8 dragons? I've very lightly glued their flight stands in - for easy removal when it comes time to paint. Once painted, THEN things get permanently attached.
I did this because while carrying primed dragons in a (large) box worked, it didn't work so well for finished dragons....
So now they (+6 infantry) all reside in a Battlefoam 720 with Magna Rack.
That is ALL that'll fit in that case model wise. Infantry #5 & #6 = just barely (because of base sizes). If I could just turn the dragon bases a bit more.... Alas, it's those tails/wings/heads again. :(

And with the bases/flight stands they're tall enough that you can't add any other trays to the rack. Or drop the top tray down enough to accommodate other models.
There's just enough room between the top tray & case lid for the rule book. Or Codex + notepad.
