Hello! I am a new dakka member and want to start a small Ultramarines army that does not cost too much but is also fun to play. The units I currently own are; primaris lieutenant, 3 Aggressors with fragstorm grenade launchers and boltstorm gauntlet, 5 assault intercessors and a primaris chaplain. I have literally no idea what to do. A half-completed list is below with all data from a PDF codex.
Thanks in advance.
--HQ
Chaplain on Bike – 115 PTS
--TROOPS—
5 Assault Intercessors- 95 PTS
--ELITES—
Aggressor Squad (Boltstorm + Fragstorm) - 135 PTS
345 PTS total.

The best thing to buy would probably be one of the patrol boxs, maybe not the ultramarine one.
Failing that the lists needs some ranger and heavy options, so getting a primaris dreadnought would be a good idea. Followed by something that can do melee like bladeguard (2xboxs) or venguard veterans(1xbox).

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Oh ok cool. Would it be worth getting terminators, chaplain on bike or a new captain?

The chaplain on the bike is a very good and often run options. The termintor less so, but they aren't terrible right now. Cpts are bad either, although the way I see them run they are most often upgraded to chapter masters and running around with jump packs and stuff like teeth of terra or a thunder hammer. A chaplain on a bike does the same, but also can buff himself or other units.

Welcome to Dakka, you can give advice to other people right now if you wanted to. Consider seeing if you can pick up models second hand.

Read the rules for Ultramarines and consider what types of strategies would work with those rules. Or look at Space Marines and Ultramarines lists that do well and not so well in tournaments or Youtube battle reports and compare and contrast.

I don't think Assault Intercessors should be a part of your strategy, I have never seen them used in an Ultramarines list and theoretically they offer nothing of value because UM can fall back and shoot so you don't really need this type of pure melee unit and the unit itself will be weak without the benefits they can get from being in a chapter like White Scars or Blood Angels.

Do you recommend any other units?

I’ve been using a squad of autobolt rife intercessors in my last few games and they have been doing well for me. Give the sarge a combat toy, and move them forward to take objectives. A 5 man squad with the normal rifles is also a good pick. Good range, decent firepower, holds objectives. Ultras don’t leverage the strengths of the assault guys, but that doesn’t make them useless. But IMHO you would be better with shooty versions. Field them if you got them though.

One thing I’ve found in small games is that it’s hard to keep boots on the ground where you need them. I’ve enjoyed using phobos guys, both infiltrators and incursors? (or whatever the ignore cover guys are called, silly names)

In small games you can probably skimp on the anti-tank firepower, but once you go larger you really need to keep an eye on that.

To do this on a budget, I would definitely be looking at ebay, or any local second hand available. Especially if you are willing to put in a bit of work modeling.

Make a personal wish-list and patrol ebay to see if you can get a good deal on any of those units.
Chances are you will be if you're willing to wait a bit. I would suggest you mostly stick to the primaris infantry. Most of these are good units and its hard to go wrong here.

I *stongly* caution you against vehicles. They are too expensive (on both your points and your cash) and are destroyed too easily. The redemptor dreadnaught is a bit of an exception here; its a good unit but it is hard to find cheap.

Terminators -while not primaris; can be a good pick also. You can often find them on ebay cheaply and so you can get a very good unit very inexpensively. Terminators are having a bit of a resurgence right now, and its somewhat undecided what the best loadout is. Most likely for you it doesnt much matter. They are however a slightly different scale than the Primaris models and that bothers some people. It bothers me. There are some excellent "true scale" terminator conversions available on youtube but they require other kits so they'll get more expensive. Do with that information what you will.

Incursors are good on Ultras and so are Intercessors with Auto bolt rifles, but I probably wouldnt go too crazy here. You already have your 1 troops choice you need for a patrol, and I definitely wouldnt go up to 3 until you are ready for a batalion. While I agree that the optimal choice for ultras is probably ABR intercessors instead of assault intercessors, swapping over and letting a unit you already own sit on the shelf isn't very economical. But yeah, I'd put them on your ebay list for sure.

I would look to pick up a unit with some heavy firepower. Eradicators would probably be the ideal choice. Attack Bikes with meltas are also very good (the second non-primaris unit I'd reccommend) as an alternative. You may be able to get hellblasters more cheaply, and for a smaller point game: they'll do.

A final tip, bladeugard veterans are a good unit but kinda pricey. I kitbashed mine from Primaris Lieutenants I got for dirt cheap on the secondhand market. Saved a bit of money that way.
