This was a pick-up game I arranged with a local player in my area. We decided ahead of time to play a simple Patrol mission. We then proceeded to Gestalt Studios in Powell Wyoming to play!

French airships had been on maneuvers off the coast of South America with the permission of the local government. However, the United States saw the region as their sphere of interests, and invoked the Monroe Doctrine as a pre-text for interrupting the French maneuvers. Things quickly escalated as the two commanders refused to backdown, and a clash became inevitable.

Forces:

I brought the French.

L'Aire National
Bouvet- Charles Martel class Battleship- Command 3
Cassini- D'Iberville class Cruiser- Command 4
Epee- Chasseur class Destroyer - Air Torpedoes- Command 1

My friend Marc from The Painted Dwarf brought the US, and he was still painting them up for the game.

US Navy
USS Murphy's Law- Michigan class Battleship - Command 4
USS Thomas - Bainbridge class Destroyer- Command 2

Mission:
This was played on a 36 x 36 MU board as a standard Patrol mission. We played 6 turns and victory was determined by armor value. This was a straight forward Raid mission with the US as the attacker.

We opted for no complications.

Set-up:
We divided the table into 4 quadrants and generated some terrain.

Grid 1 = Mountains Altitude 3
Grid 2 = Mountains Altitude 3
Grid 3 = Two cloud banks at 7 and 3
Grid 4 = No Terrain

The United States choose sides and began to deploy up to 6MU in from the board edge with Grid 2 and 3 in them. The French had the opposite side of the board. The Bainbridge was close to the Michigan class to act as cover, and they were roughly in the center of the board at altitude 4, going 4.

The French were in the corner, with the Charles Martel at Altitude 4, going 4. It was escorted by the Chasseur at altitude 5. The D'Iberville anchored the line at altitude 6.

I am going to try to cover this turn by turn, but as it was a teaching game I am sure I missed a few things while also monitoring the game and the rules a bit.

More Americans vs French action.....

I went down to Gestalt Studios in Powell, WY to face off against my friends Americans one more time with my French fleet.

French airships had been on maneuvers off the coast of South America with the permission of the local government. However, the United States saw the region as their sphere of interests, and invoked the Monroe Doctrine as a pre-text for interrupting the French maneuvers. Things quickly escalated.

Forces:

I brought the French.

L'Aire National
Bouvet- Charles Martel class Battleship- Command 3
Gloire- Gloire class Armored Cruiser- Command 3
Cassini- D'Iberville class Cruiser- Command 4
Voltaire- Descartes class Cruiser - Command
Epee- Chasseur class Destroyer - Air Torpedoes- Command 1

My friend Marc from The Painted Dwarf brought the US, and he was still painting them up for the game.

US Navy
USS Murphy's Law- Michigan class Battleship - Command 4
USS Poe's Law - Connecticut class Heavy Cruiser- Command 1
USS Thomas - Bainbridge class Destroyer- Command 2
USS Smith - Bainbridge class Destroyer- Command 2

Mission:
This was played on a 36 x 36 MU board as a standard Patrol mission. We played 6 turns and victory was determined by armor value. This was a straight forward Patrol mission with the US as the attacker.

We opted for no complications.

Set-up:
We divided the table into 4 quadrants and generated some terrain.

Grid 1 = Cloud at 3
Grid 2 = Mountain to 3
Grid 3 = Mountain 3 and cloud 5
Grid 4 = Cloud 8

The Americans spread across the board at mid-range and height spread out across the board. The Americans are relatively evenly spaced.

The French are on the left side of their deployment zone set-up to move at an angle across the board. The battleship is leading the way. with the following cruisers at various heights.

Makes me really wish I had picked up some of Catalyst Games' Leviathans plastic ships when they were still available for less-than-insane prices.

Good thing then that they have a kickstarter coming up soon.

Some very exciting battles!

I am planning on showcasing the game to friends with a Falklands War-inspired theme. Not quite sure which sky navy to use for my counts-as Argentines.

Well, I am not an expert on the ABC nations, but they came from a variety of nations including Italy, Britain, France, and America. At least, that is what my quick research shows.

If you wanted to get REALLY crazy Manchu, you could pick a few ships from a variety of lists.

However, I wrote up some rules for Regional Powers (Like Argentine, China, etc) that did not make it into the book for space. Osprey maybe publishing it on their website at some point, but I am not 100% sure. Therefore, I will put it out here for your thoughts and possible use:

Regional Powers
Besides the Great Powers, there are a number of other countries attempting to gain regional power through the use of an Air Navy. South America is especially rife with these types of regional politics. However, they are not the only place. The countries bordering the Baltic Sea have a similar regional competition politically, economically, and militarily.

Most of these countries lack the industrial base to build Air Warships on their own. Instead, they tend to form alliances or sign building contracts with one of the Great Powers. This power tends to act as their “patron” on the world stage. This patronage allows these lesser powers to improve their own military forces with secondary units and designs from their Patron powers. The United States and Britain are exceptions to this process as they are willing to sell Air Ships to anyone with the right coin.

These Regional Powers tend to have one “fleet” of Air Ships that consists of a few cruisers and escorts. They can not field larger forces and it takes great national effort to field the Air Ships they have. Some try to emulate their patron’s doctrine’s and organization, others adhere to the Mahan school, while others follow the Jeune Ecole approach to Air Warfare. No matter the doctrine, there are few formal academies and actual hands-on training is rare compared to the Great Powers. There simply is not money in the budget to fly the fleet on a regular basis.

Officers tend to come from families with commercial interests in knowledge of Airships. The crews are the left-over conscripts that the local armies do not want. Therefore, command ability can vary wildly and crew skill is low at best.

These regional forces do not intend to compete with the Great Powers, except in desperation. However, the can be effective against local nations with limited access to Air Power. Such a fleet can make the difference between victory and defeat. Hence, all nations that aspire to greatness must try to build an Air Fleet of their own.

Lesser Powers include regional powerhouses like Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Greece, China, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Belgium, and similar countries. Most have a single Patron that provides the bulk of their forces, with a few airship supplements from the United States or Britain.

Determining Command Dice
Regional Power

Roll a d6 for each ship:
1-2= Command of 1
3-5= Command of 2
6 Command of 3

Line-of-Battle
Choose a patron Great Power for the Regional Power. They can choose Armored Cruisers, Cruisers, Light Cruisers, and Escorts from this list. In addition, they may add 1 United States or British Cruiser for every 2 Cruisers from their Patron. For every 3 escorts taken, 1 may be taken from either the United States or Britain.

For Example, Argentina has Britain as a Patron Great Power. Therefore, they choose to take a Minotaur class armored cruiser, Active class Light Cruiser, and 3 Shah class frigates. Assuming they still have Operational Value left, they can then choose 1 United States Cruiser and 1 United States Escort. In this case, they choose Denver class and a Smith class to round out their fleet.

The Great State of New Jersey

Hmm, the roughly 400 Argentine, Brazilian, Chilean, and Dutch Aeronef vessels I ordered from Brigade are going to have a hard time with that I think.

Well, people have asked for a supplement so I eventually I will get around to fleshing the Regional Powers out better, and there has been a huge demand for custom ship building too.

Edit: Oh yeah, and also there is 0 need to use an actual 'British" or "American" of whatever ship from whatever range. Just the profile, to be clear.

I like the idea of Regional Powers having tutelary relationships with Great Powers. I think that’s an excellent addition to the game.

For me, in my personal version of this imaginary past, I think I’d like to explore the idea of the ABCs developing into Great Powers themselves, along the lines of Japan; which, at the time (IRL), seemed very possible and probably most especially for Argentina.

Without the rules in hand, I can’t yet decide which existing list will serve for my counts-as Argentines. But I am definitely going to go that route at first, while learning the game.

Later, with some experience (should this become something I play often enough), I’ll revisit the other options, like perhaps starting a small Chilean fleet as a Regional Power or even maybe trying my own hand at list writing for Castles.

But still a ways off, with Brigade out of the office currently.
