Some years ago I read that Scale 75 made an equivalent paint for the old GW Mechrite Red.

Does anyone know which Red this could be?

Paint Range Compatibility Chart doesn't list an S75 equivalent of Mecharite Red.

Mephiston Red is the new version, although despite being touted by GW as a spot on match, the updated range never were as close to old range as stated. A lot of the vallejo paints are reasonably close, so you could try your luck there.

INSTAR used to offer a substitute for Mechrite in their Vinage lineup:

Not sure if they still sell them though..

Thanks for the clues.

Yep, Mephiston and Mechrite are very different reds.

My paint equivalance app (paintrack) has pro acryl 'burgandy' as an extremely close equivalent and vallejo game colour 72.141 extra opaque 'heavy red' also as a close match - which makes sense, as the vallejo game color range was largely a clone of the previous GW range. Both should have good coverage similar to the foundation paints.

No scale 75 paint shows as particularly close. I believe the closest current citadel paint is khorne red, though it is darker.

My last mechrite has long since dried up, so no way I can test alas.

Instar vintage paints used to be near exact matches (in colour though not coverage), but they ended that line a while ago.

The 'Heavy' Game Color paints are just rebranded Model Color paints per Vallejo and thus are as old as or older than the previous GW paints. In this case, the VMC equivalent would be VMC 70.818 Red Leather.

I have some Mechrite Red and some of the scale colour reds. The closest equivalent colour is probably Deep Red. Vallejo Game Colour Scarlett Red is also pretty close.

I don't think GW ever advertised the new paints as being a spot on match for the old range, there was a conversion chart floating around back in the day that listed comparable colours but there was a disclaimer on it that matches wouldn't be exact.

But that aside, I've never found a good match for Mechrite Red but I also didn't try very hard because I prefer the newer GW reds anyway,

Vallejo have added to and adapted the VMC line over the years. It'll sometimes be a complaint when Vallejo change a colour with no warning or indication that it's changed.

The document I'm referencing dates to 2013. The only Extra Opaque paint not listed in the document is 72.152 Heavy Salmon Orange.

VMC Red Leather is listed as 136 out of 210 products in the Model Color line, and there are gaps in the numbering of the line (e.g., 190-200 are missing) showing unused numbers or discontinued products. With it's position in the line, Red Leather is a well established color and not a recent addition.

Okay, I will give deep red a shot.

The closest match I could find for VMC is Burnt red (this is pretty close).

My VMC Red Leather is a tanned flesh colour.

Try Vallejo Game Colour Extra Opaque Heavy Red. - that range of paints were introduced specifically as Vallejo's "Not-" range of Foundation paint equivalents.

Wazdakka red is darker than mephiston red, I still use red gore for a darker red base.

As has already been mentioned in this thread, that's just VMC Red Leather rebranded for the Game Color line.

Oh Canada!

You can buy either one and get the same paint. Some hobby shops carry the Game Color line but not the full Vallejo range.
