So i may have gotten into the bright idea of starting a scouring era AL force, yeah, why? because i want to make another Phyrax.
Anyways, my little big core issue is, how to make decent looking scales, neither opposed to painting (albeit limmited in skills as i am) nor greenstuff.

I have trawled youtube for some first ideas but i am curios, has someone managed to make a tool for creating fast and easy greenstuff scales / cloaks to hand on armor?

What about hydras?

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

It can be done.

A few years ago, I sculpted a 2 AL CSM squads on commission. To do this, I pressed a thin layer of green stuff - about 2 mm thick - on armor panels and used a metal tool to press scales into the surface.

Used the old CSM sculpts for the project, only put scales on the shoulder pads and leg greaves.

The process was pretty simple, I carved thin rows into the GS then pressed them out with a triangle tool. The first one probably took me about an hour, the 20th one maybe took 5 minutes. Start to finish I spent about 4 hours.

The only big issue I had was scales falling off after curing. This happened with 3 of the models, the GS got so thin in areas some of the individual scales popped off. It was easy enough to fix with more GS.

Good luck!

This tutorial might help - it gives a good illusion of depth, and is one of the simplest ways of achieving good scales I've seen (although I've not got round to trying it yet, so it remains to be seen whether it's as simple as JH makes it look).

Yeah, that makes sense,

You rekon one could apply this technique on a cloak?

Yeah, that is a nice look, even if i am may well not be able to replicate the technique due to a severe case of talentless and skillless and timeless

Many thanks to you two btw, for these tipps.
