Subject: Spare mags for bolter?
|
|

I want to get hold of bolter mags to add as spares on figures. I've been looking around for sources for such (GW official, 3D-print stores etc), but haven't found anything for plain bolter mags. I could of course carve them from spare bolters, but I find it a bit difficult to do well and I also don't have a lot of spare bolters lying around so it's not ideal. So I'm wondering if someone knows where I could find such or has other ideas for how to solve this neatly.
My apologies if this has been posted before, I'm sure a lot of people have thought about this before, but searching this forum didn't provide any leads.

Off the top of my head: Sternguard Veterans, and Mark III & IV Squads have them (IIRC).

Anvil Industries has them for space marine bolter scale in the 'exo lord' range - short straight mag: https://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/straight-magazines-6 long straight mag: https://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/extended-straight-magazines-6 curved mag: https://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/curved-magazines-6 mags visible in pouches: https://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/pouches-and-magazines-7 They also do drum and box mags, but that's probably not what you're after. The GW mark IV marine ones are hidden inside appropriately sized pouches. The Mark III marine sprue has them in a sort of holster, e.g. here. I've found some ammo pouches on shapeways, but not bare mags yet, apart from drum/box mags of which there are ample! The primaris intercessor kit comes with 3x different bits so you can choose which type of bolt rifle they have. You could cut up the spares to claim the magazine e.g. Stalker straight mag and chamber: https://bitzarium.com/en/primaris-intercessors-warhammer-40-000-bits/10754-stalker-bolt-rifle-chamber-space-marines.html bolt rifle curved mag and chamber: https://bitzarium.com/en/primaris-intercessors-warhammer-40-000-bits/10752-bolt-rifle-chamber-space-marines.html Will keep an eye out if I spot any more.

Wow, thanks for the great input! My aim is to have the spares look the same as those in the bolters (I'm using the Deathwatch set), the best option for this so far seems to be getting some bolt rifle chamber pieces and cut the magazine out of them.
Having pouches for them would also be nice, but I haven't been able to find one which would actually fit a mag inside!

They use the same material that they use for bolt pistol holsters.

Ah, yes, the ones with a built-in portal to a warp sub-dimension with enough space for the gun
On a more serious note, I'm clearly bringing myself a lot of pain trying to make some "real-world" sense of models clearly designed using rule of cool, but I guess it's a brand of pain I somehow enjoy.

There’s a few in GW kits! The only 2 that come to mind are in the MkIII Iron Armour marines and the Thunderwolf Cavalry. The former are mags in pouches, the latter has just loose magazines:

Those thunderwolf bits look pretty neat, I should probably look around for some of those, thanks for pointing them out!
I figure I should also point out another solution which I found "by accident" some days ago, in case someone else would be looking for ideas for this and comes upon this thread: turning the mag well on a bolter (probably easiest done with the mag/scope part from a bolt rifle) into a holder for the mag. Here's the picture which made me realize this can be done, it just takes a little cutting and looks good to me at least:
