I picked up the Age of Darkness book, and I'm not sure what Legion or other army I want to go with.

So, if you'd like, pitch me different ideas! I'm all ears.

Imperial Fists. I got the boxed set yesterday. I'm going to use a mix of MkII and MkIII armour. The 40K army I'm working on is Crimson Fists, and I'm going to take 30 of the MkVI beakies from the HH:AoD set and paint them as Rogue Trader era Crimson Fists(hello, Field Police). Kind of like an updated and improved RTB01 kit, but far better assembled and painted than what 13yo me managed to do back then.

Space Wolves can run and charge in the same turn.

Emperor's Children get +1 Initiative on the charge

Blood Angels get +1 to wound on the charge

World Eaters get +1 Attack on the charge

Based on your description, Space Wolves seem like the better choice. Plus, if you're into the modeling side, you can get upgrade packs and bits easily to make your models more unique.

What are the SW unique units?

And thanks everyone for the advice!

If you don't really like painting I would go with blood angels since they're easier to paint than SW, you can get an effective red with just a rattle can, highlights and wash while the SW require a bit more work with painting and converting since they have a lot of unique looking stuff (grey slayers instead of tactical squads for example) that will likely be very individual as opposed to the more uniform look of other legions.

Blood angels have a rite of war that literally screams "fast melee" as it consists of jump troops that all drop in together to rush into combat with the enemy.

I'd suggest trying some of the heresy books to get a bit of background on the legions and see which one you get behind more. Either go for the heresy book series or find copies of the black books online since they're currently OOP. Space wolves are in book 7 and blood angels are in book 8.

There's no reason Grey Slayers need to look different from Tacticals, it's essentially just a name change. You could use some 40k heads and gubbins to make them fancier but it's not necessary.
As for unique units, there are:
Grey Slayers - SW Tactical replacement. They can do the usual Bolters or CCW/Pistol but can also take combat shields on the whole unit.
Deathsworn - Fancy CQC veterans with Stasis bombs.
Varagyr - Terminator elite of the Legion.
Wolf Priests - Replacements for certain Consul upgrades.
IIRC there was a new one added with 2.0 but I don't know exactly what it is.

Character-wise you have:
Leman Russ plus his dog friends
Geigor Fellhand
Hvarl Red-Blade

Loyalist/traitor is also a big decision. I think Traitor elements from traditionally Loyalist forces are especially interesting, and vice versa (though I have since turned traitor for my EC!).

I do like the traitor forces from loyalist units. Imagine a group of Ultramarines who really believe in Horus’s message and their view is clearly that their primarch has been misinformed. The whole “if only he knew”. There’s plenty of other opportunities though.

I honestly feel like the loyalists from traitors is a bit overdone now since they feature so prominently. Still not a bad concept though. I give bonus points for black shields though. Everything went crazy so we’re on our own.

I’m leaning Iron Hands-the durability added from their trait seems quite good, and encourages enemies to engage in melee.

This is mostly correct, but not yet updated for the new edition. Building off what Gert had here:
Grey Slayers: Very flexible tacticals that come base bolt pistol, combat shield and fenrisian axe, which is essentially a CCW but with reaping blow. Come base with relentless and counter attack(1) Can swap shields for bolters, and special weapons/power weapons can be spread throughout the squad.
Grey Stalkers: As above, same special rules, but come with bolt pistol and chainsword base. Can buy bolters and combat shields for squad members, and can also spread special weapons/power weapons throughout the squad.
3 consuls, the 2 priests (one chaplain/apothecary hybrid, one librarian replacement), and a Thegn, which gives skirmish and counter attack(1). There's also a praetor upgrade for counterattack(2) and skirmish subtype.

Characters are correct.

Some more comments on Grey Slayers/Stalkers.

Slayers cannot take special weapons. And neither unit can take an Augury Scanner. Since apothecaries can no longer take Augury Scanners, your only choice for one in a Stalker unit (It would be iffy in my mind even wanting one in a Slayer unit) would be a techmarine.

On top of that they are significantly more expensive than Legion Tactical Squads, 45 more points for the first 10 guys, and 2 more pts a guy than a tactical. That said I see nothing restricting you from taking standard Tacticals. So personally I'd see taking some of each. Cheap Tacticals to hold objectives closer to home, and Grey Stalkers/Slayers to go take objectives away from your opponent.

Gah, there's so many options!

I'm looking at the Iron Hands unique units and they're not the best for my style, but the Blood Angels have some cool ones...

It'd be nice if there was an online reference-I've got the books, but it's a bit of a hassle to flip through 'em.

I made a quick Blood Angels list, heavy on the Jump Packs. Here it is.

Raven Guard! Interesting, fast play style. Brutal melee with cool, unique units (dark fury assault squads), lots of jump packs and plenty of thematic scope. I’m traitor through and through but Raven Guard drew me to loyalists. Also very easy to paint and can make thematic use of all the beaky helmets floating around atm

Personally, I'm all in on Alpha Legion. With their ability, you just get to play the best units from any faction you want.
