I am not quite sure if this is the correct Thread to ask this, but here goes nothing... If it is wrong, let me know please and i delete it directly
Right now I am at the point, where i want to start a small squad of a second army (500 points, maybe 1000 some sunny day)

Now I cant decide wether Salamanders or Ravenguard and I am honest, I am not that proficient with Space Marines (Ork Player here...) So I wanted to ask for tips on which Boxes to get, which models to obtain, and whether or not someone could point me into a direction with an approx. 500 points list of the two factions, so I dont buy stuff which is absolutely nonesense (as money is always an issue ^^)

I know they play completely different and might have completely different Units but still.

Here are some boxes I would look at. You can mix and match, pick what you like, I'm just going to give you a list of options to start. Probably I am going for a Patrol detachment here, so 1 HQ, 1 troop to start.

Primaris Captain in power armor: This is a really general pick for your HQ. He's always good no matter your force. This is my recommendation, but other good options are the Primaris Chaplain and Primaris Chaplain on bike. The chaplain on bike is usually built more as a smash character, the Captain/Chaplain on foot are more of a buff-my-friends style.

Infiltrator/Incursors: Probably the best troops choice out there, mostly because of their forward deployment ability. I prefer Incursors, some prefer Infiltrators. If you like the anti-deepstrike bubble you take Infiltrators, if you dont really care too much you save points and take Incursors. I *highly* recommend one of these two units.

Intercessors or Assault Intercessors: another decent troops choice, mostly just to get some meat on the board and hold down objectives.

Bladeguard Veterans or Terminators: This will add some melee punch. Bladeguard are very good units, but the Terminator teleport strike can be really handy. I think I prefer the terminators at this point; but the scale is a little weird if you're doing all primaris so maybe convert? Or go with the bladeguard and dont worry about it.

Redemptor Dreadnaught: A decent durable vehicle with some good options. I like the plasma incinerator but the heavy onslaught gatling cannon is also good.

Agressors with flamestorm guantlets (Salamanders only): A good unit for Salamanders, its not very useful for Raven Guard. Agressors are in sort of a weird place. I tend to think they arent very good *unless* you play Salamanders.

Eradicators: Not sure how much anti-tank firepower is required at 500-1000 points, but if you do want to bring some these guys are the best at what they do.

Eliminators: A handy unit with some great deployment and mobility options. Either lasfusils or bolt sniper rifles are good. It is looking like maybe lasfusils are going to be a free upgrade? If this is true may as well go with them. Its a really good unit, thematically more raven-guard, but salamanders could definitely use them too.

With your aspirations set at 500pts I would always lean to build my list around a theme, rules come and go but a set that looks good together will always be worth putting down in the future…

With that in mind I’d decide my chapter based on the units I wanted to paint up, raven guard are stealthier and would suit the phobos pattern stuff particularly well.
