So I have a pile of shame from the Hachette collections as well as a number of mini, unfinished marine projects (I like painting different stuff).

Despite doing this since second edition, I have finally decided to paint up some Ultramarines and strangely, I like it.

I was wondering therefore, what units are good under Ultramarines? I know generally they are a shooty army, so I’m saving the melee-orientated ones for my custom chapter but generally, it sure what would be good. Eg, should I focus on intercessors or things like infiltrators etc?

I am not an UM expert, but I know SM in general.

You have good troops. Intersessors for holding home objective. Sitt back and shoot. Be annoying. Stand on objectives. Assault intercessors for taking the enemies objective. They are cheaper, and good if they get a charge of. Both the troop infoltrators are good. Although I like the cheaper once. These are for holding objectives. Troops tend to die very easy. Take them for utilaty, do not take them for offense.

You need long ranged support with a damage hier then 2. That is because there is a lot of damage - 1 out there. Your best chooses are redemptor dreadnought plasma, eliminators with laser fusili, devestator with multimelta/gravety gun in a drop pod and lastly the primaris eradicators.

For HQ you can go hero hammer. More difficult with the less CO we have these days. Or just grab some cheap once with re-roll auraes. Very important if you want plasma overload.

Once you have HQ, troops and long ranged weapons there are not many points left. But the 'mandatory' units are done so it is time to sprinkle your own style of play. (I should point out that there are a lot of meaning full choise you have done already.)

Utilaty units like servitors are great for engage on all fronts secondaries. If you have heavy support slots left eliminator snipers are quite cheap and good for their points. (Although get 2 units for better threath.) You can invest in better melee for sweeping attacks. Outriders, blade guard and the new and improved Terminators come to mind. Jump pack marines can also fit in her.

Perhaps you like Invictor rushes? Or perhaps a tank or airplane suits your style. Just fill out this last bit of the army with what you like. Just stay away from filling it with troops. They are good but they die easy to D2 weapons and do not punch above their weight lass. With is fine for this sort of codex.

The point of Ultramarines is that you can get into the thick of it and still get your shooting off. That doesnt mean exclusively units ignoring melee though. Use of Aggressors and Relic Terminators is my recommendation.
