So - most people are probably aware of the Age of Sigmar RPG, soulbound.

If not, look it up, it's good fun.

The short version is that the soulbound are groups of troubleshooter types who are spiritually bonded together (hence the name), from all different regions and races of the mortal realms, and basically act as private investigators, spies, vigilantes and mercenaries (or 'generic Player Character Heroes.....').

They were supposedly pretty common in the age of myth, and to a lesser degree in the age of chaos, when they became a lot less common due to people in spiky armour murdering them a lot, but have been resurrected as an entity as the free cities start to spread something resembling civilisation back into the other realms.

They work with the stormcast- sometimes having attached stormcast allies - but the stotmcast can never be part of a binding themselves.

I was rereading this and wondered how a battlefield sized force from the order would look, and if it could be an interesting army on the tabletop.

Essentially you'd have several Bindings as 'meta-unit' formations, each with a bunch of heroes. You'd have access to any non-unique, non-stormcast, non-mounted hero with the ORDER keyword, including stuff like fyreslayers, sylvaneth and khainites.

Obviously a bunch of standard rules would be needed so you can substitute SOULBOUND for any faction-locked special ability keyword.

Soulbound in the RPG can call on their binding to do exceptional things like suffer pain and injury on another's behalf or access on another's skills, so command abilities to cancel damage and sprinkle mortal wounds across other characters in a binding, or draw range and line of sight for a spell from another character than the caster could represent this.

With most on foot characters being in the hundred point ish range and battalions being similar you're looking at one to just shy of two dozen character models as an 'army'.

Could this work? More importantly, could it be interesting to play with and against?

Can confirm, it is indeed a fun book. Even if you aren't into the RPG aspect, there is lots of great lore/world building in the book.

A Soulbound warband would be pretty cool as a one-off "build what you got/want" unit for Order factions, and have equivalents for the other factions, but I'm not sure it would have legs as a complete faction/army imo without more tedious rules bloat.

Comparing how Soulbound stack up against regular heroes stat-wise... they'd be a wee bit more than 100-point types! It'd be between that and an army of Gotreks, really.

If you wanted to make it you could probably put something together using the anvil of apotheosis rules.

A good topic.

I've heard of Soulbound but know little of it beyond being GW's answer to D&D. If its basically a party of minor heroes doing a bit of dungeon crawling, then I've been enjoying that with the Glymmsforge Catacombs campaign...

...and feel that now you mention Soulbound, GW are definitely missing a trick here; a Soulbound battletome(for heroes) and warscroll pack(for hostiles) would be all they need, with only the requirement of the core AoS rules which can be downloaded for free. Imagine the extra sales of kits players wouldn't normally purchase, such as a Stormcast Questor, a Sylvaneth Branchwych, or a box of Blue'n'Brimestone horrors...

But as a unit part of a normal AoS army? Tricky one, as the odd member of a party might be facing their own faction which would be awkward, to say the least! But unless the rules gave them an unfair advantage, I'd be okay with it.

Damn, just looking at the Shadows in the Mist cover I just realised that I need some Sylvaneth in my life...

Soulbound aren't minor heroes; the premise of the system is the inverse of WHFRPG. Soulbound are imbued with magical power that makes them immortal, gives them supernatural stamina and resilience, etc. It also isn't an 'answer' to D&D any more than WHFRPG was, or any of the 40k rpgs, etc. There is a body of customers who want RPGs for these settings and GW has contracted companies to fill that niche, and everyone wins
