I realize they might have different aims but i never get why all of batman's opponents or superman's opponents didn't just hit them all at once. This isn't even justice league vs the legion of doom but rather each hero having multiple villains to themselves. I mean could you imagine if like 15 villains teamed up against batman or superman at once since they had many villains per hero. It goes from them constantly losing to rofl-stomping the hero every time. At that point it's not even fair for the hero.

There have certainly been team ups, but they're usually countered by the hero calling in some friends to help out.

Batman's Knightfall story sort of went this way, but even then they weren't working together... Bane broke everyone out of Arkham, and then waited for Batman to exhaust himself running around catching them all before stepping in with the KO.

The closest I can think of is Superman: Red Son, where Wonder Woman, the Batmen, the Green Lanterns, Lex Luthor and Brainiac team up against Superman in one climactic battle.

In mainline continuity…Sinister Six? Batman: the Movie?

Definitely Batman: The Movie.

To some extent this is sort of the stuff that was brought up for Spider-Man, who had the Sinister Six come up against him to try and take him out together. Usually this doesn't end out working because the hero is able to divide and conquer against them, either physically or through mind-games. Narratively, they opt to just capture him or an outside third party helps free the hero to face off against the villains.

A big part of the reason why this is framed as unviable is because they may not all be out of prison/asylum at the same time and thus it might be harder to coordinate a planned attack against them. Others will be a matter of pride, (i.e. Joker wanting to be the one who takes Batman out) and some just not being team players. In other cases, it's a matter of scale, particularly for Superman. Doomsday is kind of a mad beast that kills everything in its path, so if anything it would be something that would have to be either mind controlled or a high risk "ally" to try and kill superman with. Darkseid thinks pretty much everyone is beneath him and would be highly unlikely to enter the fray personally alongside lesser villains. I can see lower level villains like Metallo, Parasite and Atomic Skull acting as muscle for Luthor, but others may not even be aware of them like General Zod. The villains also don't usually know the hero's identity, so they're sort of forced to create a trap in order to make their alliance work, which is somewhat easier said than done with most villains who are fairly short-sighted in their aims.

Realistically, superheroes have always kind of had a "villain of the week" for comics, so it makes no sense to waste/repeat a villain by cramming 15+ guys into a 30 page issue. As you mentioned, usually if its an ensemble villain team up, it's usually limited to 2-6 villains, or if its more, it involves the Justice League and other heroes to balance it out.

Doylist: because the story would suck and nobody would read it.

Watsonian: because if they were reasonable and cooperative people they wouldn't be supervillains. Even if you could somehow convince all of them to agree to take on Superman at once they'd immediately start trying to set things up for their own victory in the post-Superman world and ensure that all of their fellow supervillains die in the fight. And then things promptly break down into villain vs. villain fights.

Spider-man gets a lot of villain teamups, sometimes they get a special book title out of it too like 'The Deadliest Foes of Spider-Man' or the like.

Beyond that, yeah, having a bunch of the hero's rogues gallery join forces to take him down is a very common comic trope. It's powered many an event comic, such as Sinestro Corps War.

Not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I think many of The Flash's enemies did team up. Captain Cold was one of them, and after The Flash had been vilified by the media, and time-jumped for the whatever century that Iris came from, the Captain gave him a last toast. A respectful one at that. So it's not all of the Flash's foes, but just many of the more reasonable/sane ones.

Now since I don't have the previous issues, I don't know why the media was vilifying The Flash. Maybe the villains knew they couldn't take him, even as a team and so orchestrated some kind of smear campaign to turn his image from a hero to a goat.

Pretty much every time Batman loses (Bane, Hush, also Bane) is a result of the mastermind wearing him down by unleashing all the villains at him at once before going in for the kill. When the villains "win" they ultimately can't coexist and become easier to take down once they've started fighting for territory amongst themselves.

A few examples have already been mentioned.

There's also the "Old Man Logan" story arc with Marvel where pretty much this happens and end in a post-apocalyptic world.

Not quite exactly what you're going for, but theres the What If... "Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe" one-shot where the Punisher... well, does exactly what the title says. Superheroes and Supervillains alike... including
Spoiler:
himself.

The old man logan one is good. It's also basically the same premise as Wanted. A good comic made into a terrible movie.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Batman returns, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin were all twofers, if that counts.
