The trailer may not be doing this film any favors. It looks like a somidly mediocre Troy/Kingdom of Heaven (theatrical cut) quality “historical” movie, but in Africa. Perhaps the first since Shaka Zulu?

I wonder how this will play in the current cultural moment. I could see it making a healthy amount of money…or no money.

On the one hand, there are going to be internet chuds derailing any conversation about this movie no matter how good it is, screaming 'kangs' this or the like like its the funniest gak in the world.

On the other hand, it's a Sony movie, which means it's more likely to suck than not.

An interesting subject for a movie, I'm not quite sure what their angle is going to be here though. IIRC Dahomey participated in the slave trade and it's decline and conflict with Europeans had more to do with Britain abolishing the slave trade and blockading them. King Ghezo (John Boyega's character) is a complicated historical figure who promised to abolish the slave trade but ultimately brought it back shortly before being assassinated.

I'm interested.

I like historical stuff, so this might be interesting. Or maybe not.
But I predict it'll have a short run on the local screens. Hopefully I won't be so busy come Sept that I'll blink & have missed it. Maybe I should write a Post-It & catch it when it streams....
