Greetings, Hobbyists and Crafters!

Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Riveters Hobby Challenge, Round 39. This round's theme is The Heat Is On (described below) and the round ends on Wednesday, August 31. Our goal is to elevate and celebrate the aspects of the hobby beyond painting miniatures-- the scratch-building, theme-evoking, and detail-obsessing construction efforts that help immerse our models in a believable and richly textured world. Come one, come all!

The theme for Round 39 was selected by public poll and was originally phrased as follows:
THE HEAT IS ON: Your build should involve heat in some way. This could be a hot climate like a steaming jungle or sun-scorched desert, a hot place like a forge or foundry, steam plant, or volcanic caldera, or some hot features like bonfires, torches, bubbling cauldrons, reactor vents, rocket boosters, and so on.

Please consider building and painting playable terrain pieces, decorative terrain, display plinths and dioramas, table tiles or modular components, game aids, restoration or conversion projects... if it isn't a wargaming figure, it probably qualifies. Feel free to stretch the limits of the theme as much as you can, just make it work!

Please complete the build and paint phases in the course of the two-month challenge period. Please post up to six (6) high-quality photos in this thread before the deadline expires in your local time zone. A member of the League will compile and post the finished work for public review. Please post materials and progress photos here as well, ask and answer questions, offer insights and advice, and celebrate the work as much as the finished products.

Conveniently, with a theme of heat, I'll be adding additional low-level rocky outcroppings and cacti to the desert terrain set I built last time. But this time I'll see what I can do to get the kids involved a bit, and I've got some ideas on activities they can take part of.

I've already kicked it off by building some more bases.

I’m torn; this would definitely suit doing more of my desert terrain, but I feel that’s making my entries a bit one note. Tempted to do some sector mechanicus stuff instead…

This is perfect. I have a smithy's workshop that I can paint. Now, how on earth do you paint up the OSL for a forge...

Insectum7, way to spread the joy! I give my kids (4&6) the off cuts of my foam cutting and they build all sorts of cool stuff.

Jadenim, plenty of good fire opportunities around Sector Mechanicus. Maybe lighting up the smoke stacks with LEDs and cotton wool?

Mr Nobody, that's avery cool piece. Will you add anything before you paint? I imagine will be pretty straightforward with lots of orange with yellow highlights. Maybe highlight the 'near' edge of each stone to add some depth?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I am thinking about maybe a series of bonfires and torches flanking a hillside staircase. I kind of want something that will have a battlefield purpose as well as a display and photography role.

Mr. Nobody: Perhaps if you rigged a metal hood over the forge fire the stones around the fire threshold would have the light reflected from the hood?

Note sure what I will do this round...maybe something scratch build from the funky gum packs that look like turbines or something.

Some what excited for this months challenge as I will take the opportunity to build something that I has intrigued me for a while. There is a random little firehouse not too far from me that for whatever reason I appreciate the building design. This won't be the most intricate or amazing build, but I will be building it in the same sizing template and concepts I used for the prior challenge. This is the firehouse I will be basing my project off of.

Are you going to add the tower behind the building? That would be a nice little detail.

I wasn't planning on it, but I do have plans to build a radio tower in the near future.

Captain, I'm sure you'll come up with something... plenty of stuff to belch smoke and vent steam in the underhive.

Peterhausenn, I love that inspiration, and it'll fit well with last cycle's project. The corrugated roof and external stair will be fun challenges.

I'm leaning toward making some chimneys and vents blowing polyfill smoke and lit with colored LEDs. I've gone a little nuts working with LEDs in enclosed spaces, and I think I'll enjoy a more accommodating enclosure. I may try to design them to complement the machinery 'hills' I built a while ago that have always seemed a little two-dimensional. Maybe rule them as 'woods' instead with 2-3 gouts of steam each?

That’s looking really good now it’s all primed and tied together.

Like an idiot I primed my models at the weekend and then forgot to take a photo before I dived in and started painting!

Anyway, decided a crackling fireplace with some comfy furniture will fit the theme:

Captain, looking fabulous! Jadenim, likewise!

I'm camping with family this week, but my kids will be back in school soon and then I'll really bring the heat! In other words, I haven't really started. *sigh* If intentions were models...

Well, I think I'm finished. The OSL didn't quite turn out nicely as I thought, although I mostly guessing my way through it. Maybe I'll find some actual tutorials to watch.

Ran a little crafting morning with the kids where they helped me texture the terrain bases with sand, as well as roll up little clay balls that will get transformed into cacti for the desert table. Fun was had!

So with a mixture of lack of time and a lack of creativity I have been a bit slow on this project. I haven't been able to gain much time, but thanks to Captain Browns project I was inspired to try some new things which let me crack through the creativity wall. For starters I wanted to have some sort of wall texture but I wasn't sure what I wanted or how to accomplish it. In the end I decided to try sheets of sandpaper cut down to size to create a quick and uniform texture. Next I wanted to do something different than the stairs but I wasn't sure what. I decided to use some corrugated tubing I had, split it in half and attached it to the side. I have also been experimenting with molds and casting parts with milliput which I used through out the piece. Lastly I wanted some dome shapes and googly eyes seemed to work perfectly. It isn't super awesomely detailed but I feel there is enough there to break up the basic shape. I have had to wait a bit to get it painted since between random typhoons and high humidity its not been good weather for priming. If I am able to keep up the current process I should be finished in time.

So I'm hoping to get the bookcases finished, but it's looking a little dicey with everything I have to do over the Bank Holiday, so just in case, here's the fireplace and throne as finished:

And one of the filters in Windows is called "Burn", so it would be rude not to use it!

It really gives the air of a darkened study, deep in a dungeon lair...

While I don't think it is anything spectacular I do think it will be quite functional and I tried out a few new things when building it so I call that a win in my book.

Wow, I have been getting squeezed from all directions... back-to-school is no joke. I'm actually going to miss this round, but y'all have done an admirable job of getting some quality entries together! In lieu of an entry, I'll at least try to be prompt with the showcase and poll posts.

Great work everyone!

Great job everyone! I'm sorry I didn't get something together to join you, but I'll get the Showcase together promptly and move us ahead. The theme poll for next cycle is already posted in this forum.

Thanks!
