Got this far and willing to do some reading? Good for you!

So, I've not been all that visible on DakkaDakka recently, but as you can see from my profile details, well, I've been here a while. And so the Precinct Omega journey has been conducted largely on DakkaDakka from my earliest attempts at writing homebrew rules for 40k, through my wilderness days as a struggling commissiong painter, via early somewhat-abortive attempts at game publishing, into what was, arguably, the zenith of getting Horizon Wars published by Osprey before going my own way with the skirmish game sequel, Horizon Wars: Zero Dark.

And now, after twenty years, I reach the inevitable destination. Sure, I resisted it for a long time. I heard the siren call and saw the lure. I watched others walk the path. But I was determined to do things my own way. All the same, my journey has ended up where we all knew it would, all along: on Kickstarter.

But if it matters, I'm really trying to do Kickstarter right. This isn't a glorified pre-order or one-off exclusive (at least, I hope it isn't). This is a genuine attempt to do something a little bit different and to use Kickstarter to test the waters and work out whether it's really something people want and, if so, to what extent they want it. It's a chance to engage with people who probably haven't even heard of Horizon Wars, let alone the self-published sequel (which is here, by the way, if you're interested). It's also a chance to begin a dialogue with invested parties about where the project might go if its success justifies the extension.

Y'know: all the stuff Kickstarter was supposed to be when it began.

Yes, the base product is an STL. It's a purely economic decision. But I'm partnering with a printing service to produce physical copies for those who don't have their own printer. And if we reach enough in our stretch goals I'll be doing resin casts (£6k) and white metal casts (£7k), too. If we get that far, miniatures development will become a permanent feature of Precinct Omega instead of being something I do when I'm foolish enough to think I have "surplus" money in the business (lol).

The miniatures are inspired by the characters in the Zero Dark: Operation Nemesis campaign supplement, and they are consciously and intentionally designed with a view to creating a more realistic visible diversity in tabletop miniatures.

Anyway, if you're still reading and you missed it, the link was at the top of this post. At time of writing, the project is 97% funded in just over 24 hours and I have a lot more content in the works to share as things progress. So do pop along and give it a look.

EDIT: Scale shots of prints:

Good luck!

This also look like they would be good for a shadowrun/cyberpunk style game too.

I will spread this around where I can! I have followed your journey for a long time, and you have been an inspiration to my own journey as well.

May you roll d12!

Backed for all-in digital!

Surprised there's no option for all-in Digital *and* Physical though, and the addons for the digital option are just...the digital files again

Am I mistaken, or were you working on a Horizon Wars space battle game at one point? How is that going?

A little bump just to say "Yay! We funded!"

So the minis are definitely going to be made and shipped out in September.

While I know the KS is about the miniatures, can you provide some more info on the Horizon Wars system?

How does it work? What's the basic mechanic?

Well, first of all, there's a set of the solo rules with an exclusive mission that you can get on a PWYW basis from Wargame Vault here.

The defining mechanic is probably the dice system. The game uses d12s (because it is the best dice) and any test is against a variable target number. You roll a number of d12s based on the stat of the hero making the test and then form your resulting rolls into groups that meet or exceed the target number. So let's say Sgt Jim takes a shot at a target 11" away in low visibility and behind cover, he might end up with a target of about 15. He rolls his F stat of 4 and gets 5, 7, 10 and 12. 12+5 beats 15, and 10+7 beats 15, so he's got two successes. Because he also rolled a natural 12, he gets +1 success for a total of three successes and the target is hit three times.

The secondary defining mechanic is bonus actions. If a character rolls more successes than they need, the surplus is turned into bonus actions that can be used immediately by the active character or any other friendly character. So let's say that Sgt Jim only needed two successes to kill his target - now he's got a surplus hit left which he can use to take another shot, move or gain a support token (which can used for various things), or he can "give" that bonus action to an ally who can also do any of the aforementioned things.

You can even earn bonus actions in your opponent's activation. If a hero is shot at, they take a stress test. Any surplus successes on the stress test can immediately be used as bonus actions - to shoot back, dive for cover or whatever.

The game - like all PO games - is miniatures neutral. You can use whatever minis you like the most or use the game as an excuse to buy some cool minis you always wanted but could never justify because they didn't fit into your current army of choice.

The core rules are designed for solo, co-op or PvP play.
