Announced at Gen-Con.

Polygon wrote:At Gen Con on Friday publisher Cubicle 7 announced it was expanding its line of 40K-themed role-playing games to include regular humans who, like Nayl and Keeler, work in service to more powerful patrons. Called Imperium Maledictum, this new game was inspired by previous d100-based games published by Black Industries — including classics like Dark Heresy. The subject of this new game stands in stark contrast to the higher-tier characters available in Wrath & Glory, Cubicle 7’s marquee 40K-themed tabletop RPG. Expect the fights to be close quarters, and the narratives deliciously pulp.

“With Wrath and Glory, you’re more action-focused,” creative director Emmet Byrne told Polygon ahead of the announcement. “You’re playing archetypes and units from the tabletop [wargame]. Imperium Maledictum is [about being] much more lower-level investigators trying to work against — or work within — the mechanisms of the Imperium.”

Players will build their party as a kind of warband, with each of its characters bound to a powerful patron. That patron could be an Inquisitor, like Eisenhorn or Ravenor, or it could be a remember of the Imperium’s powerful religious caste, known as the Ecclesiarchy. Many different options will be made available to players, but the important part is the drive and focus that such a patron will give to an ongoing campaign. They will be responsible for the warband’s quests and objectives as well as the resources they have at their disposal. But they will also invest the characters with the authority they need to break through the Imperium’s crippling bureaucracy.

Mixed emotions over this. I know one of the guys writing for it, and he's worked on tons of the old FFG books (including most of the ones I worked on).

Interesting I was wondering how it tied into Wrath and Glory. Has anything happened with that game in the last year or 2?

I wonder why they didn't just make it Dark Heresy 3rd edition? Rights maybe?

This is much more what I wanted from a 40k RPG than what Wrath and Glory is, especially having missed out on the FFG ones (being like 15 at the time and not into RPGs), so I’ll be interested to see how this turns out for sure.

This one is going back to a D100 system, so that should tell you all you need to know about WANG's impact...

Ouch. I hate d100 systems. Partly for the tendency to screw up the numbers, partly for the extra time wasting on every die roll with two paired dice, when one of them only matters 11% of the time (if the tens dice is lower or higher than the stat, you've succeeded or failed and it doesn't matter what the other die reads, unless you roll '00')

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

This sounds like the Warhammer Fantasy RPG; you play ratcatchers and coachmen and initiates instead of Grail Knights and Sorcerer Lords.

This alone makes me interested. It's why Necromunda grabbed me; give me focus on something less over the top than Marines and Orks.

I'm out. Hated it in WFRP in the '80s and didn't age well.

The FFG books were worth it for the lore alone. The artwork was also great. Loved the ideas behind character creation and advancement, but never got to take it as it was too clunky for me and my gaming friends. West End Star Wars ruined us for all other, crunchier RPGs.

What is the relationship, if any, between Inquisitor and the FFG 40k RPGs?

Me too

Man if Dark Heresy (et al) had put out a Hive Gang supplement I would have been all over it!

Inquisitor the 54mm game? Other than drawing on some fluff from it (and reusing some art early on?) I don't think there is any link.

I think the only issue with the D100 system in the WH games was character creation and advancement. Take a simple D100 system like call of Cthulhu and it's very intuitive to use.

Yes, it's essentially DH3, but C7 has a long history of supporting parallel systems, so I wouldn't expect W&G to go anywhere.

I see it as a great opportunity to get extra background material.

Yeah Wrath & Glory is sticking around in the same way they do both WFRPG and Soulbound. Being so different in scope I imagine there’s an audience for both.

I hope you guys are right but I have my doubts. The difference is that WFRPG (and the FFG games) has a longtime dedicated fanbase and I don't think that WANG has reached that point due to or despite (depending on your view) the 1.5 edition revamp with the change in company. I've tried to post news about it here and usually gotten zero to a few replies in thread about it whereas news of this new DHish game has generated some excitement. Some of that is admittedly due to "completely new game" being bigger news than "new supplement/edition" but still... YMMV.

WANG may be sticking around but I sincerely doubt it'll see anymore content beyond what they already had in the pipeline and that was already very lacking compared to WFRP and even Soulbound. Bet they'd not be releasing a whole new RPG if it was successful but they clearly they recognise the power of the 40k brand but know how scarred people were by Ulysses' attempt.

Please explain. I don't have a clue what you mean. I don't know what Wang is, and also the D100 system. So is this good or bad?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

WANG == Wrath & Glory RPG.

D100 system, the dice system the old FFG 40K RPG used: roll 2D10 and get under your (modified by circumstance) stat. The margin by which you succeed (or fail) can have added effects.

It's a tongue in cheek acronym for the Wrath ANd Glory ruleset. D100 means that you role a d100 (or more commonly 2d10) to get results from 1-100 for things like skill checks and attacks which is the system that both 40k RPGs used with the previous ruleset and Fantasy ones still do apparently (never played those personally so I'm basing that off of comments). WANG uses a custom d6 system so they're basically abandoning the mechanics developed for the new 40k rpg that they just overhauled about two years ago after the game changed hands from the original creators after a year or two.

That was my assumption as well. Release whatever is in the pipeline and then only what is contractually obligated.

Has Wrath & Glory ever gotten around to implementing vehicle rules, especially the Knights that were hinted at in the past?

They came out with a vehicle book earlier this year (at least in PDF) but I don't know if physical copies have arrived yet so haven't seen it myself.

I've seen WANG's vehicle rules.

I am naturally quite biased here, but I prefer mine...

Huh neat, I'll have to keep an eye on this. Just wrapping up a Dark Heresy campaign that has been running a year and a half, and hearing of what on the surface sounds like a new edition is nifty. On the wait and see boat here though, the old system just has so much going for it, including cross compatibility between the rpgs.

Nifty, Wrath and Glory completely dropped off the radar for me. I know a friend of mine bought into the revised edition when it was being released, but I have heard nothing about it since the rerelease. I'd look into it, but the gaming group is probably cycling to D&D 5th next, so honestly the absolute best case scenario would be buying it to *maybe* use it in a year, you know, if we don't follow D&D up with either more D&D or Dark Heresy or what have you.

2019

I have played it quite a bit and GMed the starter set campaign. It’s excellent. Uses the Year Zero system (Mutant Year Zero, Tales From The Loop). The same system will be used for the upcoming Blade Runner RPG.
