Ok, so, my daughter has decided that she wants to play AoS.
We picked up the starter box, and she’s using the Stormcast Eternals.
So far, so good.
However, after building and painting an Ork green tide and IG infantry regiment, there is no way I’m doing another horde army.
I just don’t have time.
I’ve picked up a bunch of Khardron Overlords (Because steampunk dwarves)
I’m initially planning to put together about 1000pts
I’m not that familiar with AoS, as I’ve mainly been a 40k player, with a few WHF armies.
Any suggestions/advice?

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

KO are all about the skyvessels. They offer mobility most of the army otherwise lacks and gets their shooting in range. Shooting ranges in AoS are MUCH shorter than 40k, in general, so this is a big factor. Suffice it to say you'll want transport capacity, at 1k a frigate or ironclad will work.

Choosing your own code is strictly worse than taking a named port, the ports good for general play are Nar and Thryng, while Zilfin is the strongest but may be a bit much depending on the opponent.

Arkanaut Admiral got a new warscroll in White Dwarf that is different from the one in the book, also free on the app and (I think) the KO errata. A very useful hero to have around thanks to the utility of his 1/game ability. Speaking of the app, it is great even without paid features and generally stable as opposed to the 40k app (which is still quite buggy to my knowledge).

The arcane tome artifact from the core rules can be given to one of your heroes to make them a wizard, a huge asset for multiple reasons. Particularly the ability to cast mystic shield (a powerful buff spell available to all wizards).

I could comment on which units are good or bad but the truth is with the regular balance updates any advice there is likely to go out of date in short order. Suffice it to say everything is at least viable and nothing is so OP as to be game breaking. A warning though; playing AGAINST Kharadron comes with a steep learning curve and new players in particular can feel helpless against them, which is something to be aware of.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I found Maggotkin to be a relatively low model count army. With one exceptionally large model the Glottkin, I've got 3 units of Blight kings (15 models), a pusgoyle unit (2 models), a Lord of Plagues, and either Festus or Sorceror. Also, snag the tree so you get free summoning points. If you get the new box, you also get some Plague Bearers which are helpful if you summon. Also, snag some nurglings because they are great to fill in small gaps in your list or 1 round of summoning points.

Another army built around a low model count is Ogors - get their Start Collecting box and build a Tyrant on Stone Horn. You've got 2 units of guys on Mournfang for 5 models which should be about 600 points. Add in a Butcher and unit of Bulls and you should have more than a good start. Save the grots in the various boxes as eventually you'll get 20 of them which is a unit.

If you get the big starter box (dominion), then you've got the option of either or orruks or stormcast. The stormcast have less models and many of the newer models are easy to assemble. They are one of the first army books to get released so that is good and bad. Also, there are 2-4 different start collecting based on the chamber.

Death armies rely on attrition and lots of smaller models.

For other order armies, Cities of Sigmar, Daughters of Khaine, Fyreslayers, Idoneth, Seraphon, and Sylvaneth are typically horde armies. Lumineth can have low model builds if you throw in Teclis.
