Voted for several, but my favourite of the month is Mothsniper's Tyranids; a unique and beautiful scheme, very well executed!

Okay, I'm having a good go at this feedback malarky after my failure last month. Some really super minis this month, well done everyone!

Mothsniper - Absolutely love the paint scheme, it's a real winner. If I ever start collecting nids again, I think I'm going to follow your scheme! I love the transitions between colours, they're really well done. I'm not a fan of basing spilling over the base rims, but the scheme is so striking I was able to overlook it. Got a vote from me.
Daia T'Nara - I remember playing Space Crusade a lot as a kid, so this brings back warm memories for me. Love the scheme, though could be a bit neater. The bases are also a bit overwhelming and could do with some breaking up of that vivid purple in order to not take away from the lovely chaos androids.
WebwayWarrior - This looks like a nicely painted bunch of grots, but the way you've taken the photo unfortunately obscures much of that. Would love to see a better pic of them all!
Captain Brown - Congrats on getting a lot of pretty complicated models done! I wish the pics were a bit higher resolution so I could see the paintjob better, but they're visually striking and nicely based.
ChaosDad - This got a vote from me simply due to the awesome posing of the dread climbing over that rubble. Nice job! The paintjob makes them look pretty battered, in keeping with an active war zone feel, though the transfers are a little too neat and could have done with some chipping/weathering.
Obispal - Some really nice Alpha Legionnaires, love the weathering and the dust on the legs. The bases are perhaps a bit plain and the rims could be a bit cleaner, but otherwise an extremely solid entry.
Giefer - Nice snowtrooper, with a good base and mud effects. I feel like the use of mid-grey shading could have been dialled back a bit, particularly on the dome helmet. Either that, or the deeper shading could have gone much deeper. Otherwise, a very nice mini.
theCrowe - Nothing says 'legion' like massed ranks of goblins! They're nicely done, with neat looking bases. They could have done with a bit more variation between the models, and I would have taken a bit more time with the eyes, but otherwise another solid entry!
KidCthulhu - An impressive array of heroes and some really vibrant reds, blues and yellows in there! I like the paved bases, though I think they could do with a bit more highlighting, maybe drybrushing a much lighter shade around the paving slabs to make them pop a bit. I particularly like your dwarf character, his beard is great!
Lovejoy - Simply awesome looking group! The colour scheme is great and the battleworn look works so well with it. The freehand on the shields works really well as do the checkered patterns. I particularly like the rugged, tarnished metallic effects. You're tied with DV8 for me, this month.
JoshInJapan - I've already stated home much I love these models. The glowing green works great, the neat grey with smooth transitions between the excellent shading and highlighting is another beautiful feature. If I had any criticisms at all, it would be that they merge with their bases a bit too much, colour-wise, but that's a minor criticism for an excellent paintjob. Definitely worth a vote!
inmygravenimage - These are some very dynamic minis. I'm not sure I'm quite on board with the style of painting, but the colour choices are spot on and you've managed to make the faces very characterful. You could do with filling one or two of the joins a bit better, though. Nice work on the bases, too, though could the rims be more of a solid colour? Just personal preference, perhaps.
Pariah Press - Oh, the nostalgia! Takes me right back to my childhood looking through Gw's rogue trader range and imagining! The yellow and bone with the red and the grey actually works really nicely. And the goblin green rims fire more nostalgia! Criticisms are, I'd have gone with a darker base to contrast the yellow/bone colours and the drybrushing could have done with being neatened up a bit with some layering particularly on the helmets, but otherwise very nice! Just keep an eye on that Lorgar character, that name is never good...

Okay, that's already quite a lot, I'll do the other half tomorrow.

Well done everyone and thanks as always to Paradigm for all his work putting these contests together. Cheers everyone!

Part 2.:

vejut - The innumerable legions of the dead are absolutely spot on for the theme, these skellies are pretty nicely painted. The bows could have done with a bit more depth of shading. Not much more to be said, except I like the turf on the bases!
Viterbi - Cool cawdor with interesting colour choices. I think I'd have been more inclined to have the brighter colours on the upper clothing and more muted colours on the mid and lower layers as the pink especially draws the eye away from the important parts of the mini - the head and the guns. If not, perhaps the highlights on the pink could have been less stark? But a good looking ganger, nevertheless!
Arakasi - Another 'legionnaire' to hit the brief on the head. An interesting choice of colour for the longcoat, for me reminiscent of the old Mordian Iron Guard. The reflection lines on the goggles are a nice touch. Highlighting could have been a bit more refined, but overall solid.
Nevelon - I also like your 'nid scheme a lot, it works really well, especially using contrasts. The intercessors look a bit flat, perhaps they could have done with an extra stage of shading or highlighting after the contrast to make them pop, but otherwise I really like your entry. Love your snow bases (I'm a big fan of snow bases), but you could have done with wiping the rims clean.
Yo7 - Every inch (or inch-and-a-half) a defender of Minas Tirith! The silver really shines, and the silver on black of the shield is neat and effective. The eyes could have done with being painted in as that would really have made a difference as the face is the first place people look, in general. If they seem too small to see and do a good job on, try using a desk clamped magnifier or magnifying specs. I can highly recommend either!
Snail22 - Very nice old style high elf spearmen! The gems on the shields are particularly nicely done. I could have just done with a couple of much lower angle shots to really see the nice paintjob. The overview shots look good, but don't give the full impression.
Maharg - Iron Warriors are a great paint scheme and easy to make look good, but even so you've painted these guys extremely competently. I know you're a really good painter, Maharg, but sometimes I'd just like to see you push yourself a bit more. I do realise that's difficult with limited time and a large number of models to paint, of course. A good solid set of marines, though!
kurhanik - The greys and blacks are painted really neatly on these guys and have a suitably grimy feel for a battlefield. The face of the sergeant is also very nicely shaded. If I had a complaint, it would be the flat gold of the power sword - it could do with some kind of shading/weathering to bring it back down from being so bright, so it doesn't stick out from the mini quite so much. Otherwise, very nice!
DV8 - Another stellar entry! If that dreadnought were any more red, it would be bleeding! I think that's what James Swallow would describe as "cherry-red". It's difficult to find anything to criticise, but I've come to expect that from your works. You're easily my joint pick of the month, alongside Lovejoy's Stormcast.
CancelledApocalypse - Slightly disappointed I didn't get more finished from the vast force of skaven I have to paint, but I'm pretty happy with how the painting turned out. I think I overdid the matte varnish on Thanquol as he's come out quite shiny. The lighting doesn't help - it was a grey but bright day and taking the photos so close to the window was probably a mistake. I need to work out a better photography setup for next time.
DJJazzyJeff - Another bunch of nicely painted marines. I like that you've gone for glow and OSL around the jets. Not so sure the intakes would have a similar glow, however. Some good work, nevertheless, and I like the grungy, muddy bases. The base rims could have done with a clean before painting them, though, and I'm not sure about the gloss paint on them - the shine is a bit distracting from the paintjob.
Jadenim - Wow, you got a lot done this month! I'd be very happy to have any and all of those on my tabletop. Love the rusty blades and the quartered and halved shields particularly. Interested to know, why are the bases all different colours?
Midget Gems - Those are some super cool conversions, they really give the feel of an upraised feudal world having modern 40k weapons forced on them. The paintjobs are a bit lacking in refinement and I have a feeling the photography has washed out the colours somewhat, but even so it's a really characterful bunch of guard/pdf. I'm interested to know what you intend for them in the future. Also, no midget gems junior this month?

Once again, well done everyone. Looking forward to seeing the fruits of next month's efforts!

Thanks CancelledApocalypse, as these are from HeroQuest I decided to shade them in a similar way to all of the different rooms on the board. Also, given the number of repeated sculpts, it’s handy for differentiation (also useful if I use them in DnD).

Thanks Yeah, I did kind of batch paint them - I respect the design of the minis, and a well-painted Necron is a fine thing, but if we're being honest I didn't find myself enjoying the paint experience with them as much as I have been with my usual CSM and daemons/cultists, so especially on the white plating I did let myself fall into an 'eh, good enough' mindset. I hadn't really thought about the bases beyond just 'same as the rest of the army'; I suppose the bulk of marine power armour usually does a better job of outweighing the purple than the spindly robots do.

I'm gonna try to have something to say for everyone this month, just need to take a bit of a run-up for that.

Personally I think both entries were fine. DV8’s dread is a centerpiece for a space marine legion army. Not an endless horde, but still legion. And few things are more legion then spearmen. Can’t rank them up nice into a phalanx on round bases, but the spirit is there.

Having done all that time swimming in fanfic circles has made me feel guilty about ever getting feedback without giving any, so here goes, even though I'm in no position to tell anyone what to do with a paintbrush, so this is more just, random observations. Just take it as read I think they're all great, I'm just mentioning whatever pops out at me.

Mothsniper - Love that super-vibrant colour scheme, it really gives an 'invasive organism' feeling.
Daia - You have got to stop with this retro love thing, you're gonna end up buying a first gen Obliterator ...dear god, you have, haven't you?
WebwayWarrior - Bit difficult to make out, but I'm seeing some great sharp colours.
Captain Brown - All great, I particularly like the black on the leader lady's armour and the others' boots and costumes, smooth without being flat or featureless.
ChaosDad - Great weathering, and that diagonal outcrop on the base of one of them, flat bases so often make it seem like all the action's happening on level plains and that one really breaks away from that.
Obispal - Love the dusting on their legs, effective without going overboard.
Geifer - Nicely done shaded white, I know from experience how tricky that it.
theCrowe - Classic little gobbos, great skintones on them.
KitCthulhu - Great variety, I particularly like the red and flame yellow on the mace-wielding guy, it's a well-judged bold colour scheme without making him look toyish.
Lovejoy - Wonderful weathering and battle damage, they really look combat-hardened.
JoshInJapan - Very smooth grey tones, and lovely glows coming off all the green bits.
inmygravenimage - Great work on both factions, I've always been fond of the blue-grey SHIELD suits and those nail it.
Pariah Press - Great shading on the white armour sections, really has a 'used future' look.
vejut - Good shading on the bones, there's depth to them but it doesn't overwhelm the dry look of the skeletons.
Viterbi - Love how seamlessly the bright tunic fits in under the grubby outer layer.
Arakasi - I like the dark blue coat, and that little splash of colour from the eyes to set it off.
Nevelon - Great skin on the Gants, they really look leathery and flexible under their chitin.
Yo7 - I like the recess shading on the armour, and the tree really pops on the shield.
Snail22 - Classic, wonderful bright blues and gems and smooth silvers.
Maharg - Great texturing (is that the right word when it's painted?) on the bare metal areas to contrast against the hazard stripes without seeming plain, and the heat effect on the dread's weapon is a lovely touch.
kurhanik - I really like the grey, leans into the uniformity of the squad but the subtle weathering keeps them all nice and distinct from one another.
DV8 - That's a heck of a job on that red, bright and bold but also totally solid and rugged rather than looking like a toy.
CancelledApocalypse - Love the muted colours, really get the sense of these guys lurking in the shadows-shadows.
DJJazzyJeff - The glows from the jump packs really pop, I actually never thought of those as glowing before now (mind you I'm mainly painting chaos, so their jump jets are probably more of a 'belching poisonous smoke' kind of thing) but it's a great look.
Jadenim - Classic horde, I like the little details that set each of them apart from their fellow shamblers, but they all look so uniform en masse.
Midget Gems - Such a great concept, real feudal future vibes.

And of course thanks to Paradigm for organising all this-

Was that what we were doing? Nuts, I just went and bought a box of Necrons. Cheers for the votes and feedback folks. I wear my 3% with pride that I showed up and painted something, lots of little somethings, to a tabletop standard, in the name of participation.
That skin tone you’re appreciating is flat goblin green with a Thrakka green wash on top. The eyes have been dotted in a hurry where the old plastic implies that they might be, giving the impression of eyesight commensurate with their skill at archery.
In the unlikely event that I require another block of goblin archers in the future these guys are now ready to be it for as longs as it takes to wipe them off the battlefield.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

The grey shading is something I may give some more thought when I return to finish the Snowtroopers. It's definitely not going to be deeper. One cool thing about them In Empire Strikes Back is that depending on lighting, their clothes are so light that they appear uniformly white despite their otherwise clear two tone color scheme. I wanted a similar effect with extremely light zenithal(ish) highlights on the clothes. Darker armor parts or larger grey areas don't go with that.

But with how their armor has a lot more raised parts than Stormtrooper armor, I could see myself going lighter on recesses facing upward to go with the highlights on the clothing. I'm going to have to experiment with that a little, whenever I find the time and the summer heat stops ruining any attempt at blending...

Thank you very much for the comments and votes Snail22, CancelledApocalypseMade, Daia T'NaraMade. I'm glad you liked the cross over it hit the right spots for me as a simple conversion.

Also, no midget gems junior this month?

She only really joins in when the theme fits her, she really like painting Gryph-hounds

Mothsniper - absolutely brilliant colours on these models, so vibrant and cool.
Daia - nice purple base and centre on the models to blend them together
WebwayWarrior - followed the link, these look like they are very well done and cool models but really hard to see from the photo
Captain Brown - I remember how your blue background makes the red pop out and it looks great on those models.
ChaosDad - yay a return for ChaosDad, 3 very well painted models
Obispal - photos are quite small but looks good from what i can see.
Geifer - Well done of the shading, white is always difficult to do.
theCrowe - Nicely unit of gobbos sneaking in there.
KitCthulhu - A lovely mix of heros there to chose from
Lovejoy - oooh these are very well done, weathering and battle weariness is awesomely painted.
JoshInJapan - wonderful glow and light effects off the grey armour.
inmygravenimage - Great painting (I suggest using the bigger photo size next time when linking the images to make them easier to see, Drop down in the Share This Image box)
Pariah Press - cool guys, i like they have a bit of personality with their names.
vejut - Nicely done, those are some big bows.
Viterbi - Very bold highlights work well on the purple.
Arakasi - A nice weathered look to the coat.
Nevelon - classic Nev units but a 2 for 1. Nice work mate
Yo7 - Good solid colours well done.
Snail22 - Classic unit painted very well, blue on the shields is particularly nice, also reminders me of one of my first WH memories reading a White dwarf Mag (I think) where they made a joke about a cat falling on a unit of high elf spearmen
Maharg - You have done really well to get the interest into the metalwork, looks really very good.
kurhanik - A uniform look acorss the models with a bit of colour to make the leader stand out. nice.
DV8 - Amazing colour transition DV8, you really are a wonder.
CancelledApocalypse - Your getting a vote just of the board on the bottom pic. hold very found memories of WHQ and hoping to get my kids to play it with me in a few years time
DJJazzyJeff - Interesting take on a glow from the packs, I've not seen that done before but good idea.
Jadenim - A nice horde of undead, good dulled colours that match across the units.
Midget Gems - Think they turned out ok, paint job a bit of a rush as normal but another idea done from the book of ideas. Eventual plan would be to be able to field a small detachment of these to support their SM chapter.

P.S. less the a year now till the 100th challenge.

Well done everyone! Great entries from all. Thanks for all the comments and camaraderie, and looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with this month!

2nd win in as many entries for Lovejoy! It’s a high bar in this challenge but you’re keeping the top of the table on their toes.

Look at all three winners though, honestly any of these are well worthy of the top spot. Fantastic variety of entries on display too. Well done everyone.

Now the only way is down!

I reckon I'll be lucky to pick up many votes this month - only two minis so far, neither finished, and I'm not happy with either of them! Still, at least they're out of the blister and getting painted, which is the important bit.
They may even make it onto the tabletop and have some dice rolled at them at some point, which would be a welcome change...
